Accumulation of melanin pigment in some specific areas of human skin leads to various skin disorders. This study includes melanin production and extraction from non-dermatophyte, filamentous fungi (Aspergillus niger). The effect of carbon, nitrogen, pH and temperature on melanin production was also observed. Qualitative and Quantitative analysis was performed to confirm melanin pigment from A. niger by using solubility test, precipitation test and reaction with oxidizing and reducing agent. A picric acid-degrading bacterium, strain NJUST16, was isolated from a soil contaminated by picric acid and identified as a member of Rhodococcus sp. based on 16S rRNA sequence. The degradation assays suggested that the strain NJUST16 could utilize picric acid as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen and energy. Pentoxifylline, a methylxanthine, has previously been shown to augment PMN chemotaxis in vitro. The optimisation of nutritional requirements for dopamine (DA) synthesis by calcium alginate-entrapped mutant variant of Aspergillus oryzae EMS-6 using submerged fermentation technique was investigated. During an epidemic in the premature ward of Ankara Pediatric Hospital which lasted for almost 25 days, 15 cases were diagnosed and H2S (TSI medium) negative S. typhimurium strains were isolated 23 times on the specimens obtained from these patients. A novel bacterium capable of degrading 17beta-estradiol (E2) was isolated from the activated sludge collected from wastewater treatment plant of an oral contraceptives producing factory in Xianju, Zhejiang.
