The relative lethality of intestinal bacteria for gnotobiotic rats with experimental intestinal strangulation.

In eight experiments utilizing 28 animals each, germfree rats with and without ischemically or hemorrhagically strangulated closed loop intestinal segments were contaminated with either one of four common intestinal anaerobic bacteria, or a combination of two or three bacteria previously found to be innocuous in pure culture. The results showed that: a) in pure culture, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides melaninogenicus, and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius were innocuous; b) Fusobacterium necrophorum alone was a very lethal organism that produced intense, confluent, intraperitoneal, fibrous adhes

Bacteriotherapy for chronic relapsing Clostridium difficile diarrhoea in six patients.

Six patients with chronic relapsing diarrhoea caused by Clostridium difficile were treated with rectal instillation of homologous faeces (one patient) or a mixture of ten different facultatively aerobic and anaerobic bacteria diluted in sterile saline (five patients). The mixture led to a prompt loss of Cl difficile and its toxin from the stools and to bowel colonisation by Bacteroides sp, which had not been present in pre-treatment stool samples. Strains of Escherichia coli, Cl bifermentans, and Peptostreptococcus productus in the mixture inhibited the in-vitro growth of Cl difficile, which i

The presence of antibody-coated anaerobic bacteria in asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy.

Quantitative anaerobic culture of urine samples obtained from 593 pregnant women by suprapubic bladder aspiration was performed to establish the involvement of anaerobic bacteria in asymptomatic urinary tract infections. The fluorescent antibody (FA) test was applied to the sediments of bladder aspirates to determine the site of infection. Anaerobic bacteriuria (greater than or equal to 10(4) microorganisms/ml of urine) was found in 34 patients, of whom five were FA-positive. These anaerobes were identified as Lactobacillus minutus, Veillonella parvula (two patients). Clostridium putrefaciens,

[A case of multiple lung abscesses successfully treated with computed tomography guided percutaneous thoracic drainage].

A 48-year-old woman who had abused alcohol admitted to our hospital because of fever and chest pain. Laboratory data presented inflammation and liver dysfunction. Chest X-ray films revealed multiple mass lesions with air fluid levels. We diagnosed multiple lung abscesses and started treatment with antibiotics. However, her fever did not improve and mass lesions increased. On day 6 of hospitalization, three drainage tubes were inserted percutaneously into the mass lesions under computed tomography (CT) guidance, and alpha-hemolytic streptococcus, peptostreptococcus sp. and neutrophils were isol

Ertapenem (MK-0826), a new carbapenem: comparative in vitro activity against clinically significant anaerobes.

Ertapenem, a new long acting beta-lactam with broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage, was tested in vitro to compare its activity against 556 clinical isolates of anaerobes to other established agents using a broth microdilution method as recommended by the NCCLS. Against all anaerobes ertapenem inhibited 99.1% of isolates at 4 microg/mL, had a mode MIC of 0.12 microg/mL, and showed activity comparable to imipenem, meropenem, trovafloxacin, piperacillin-tazobactam, and metronidazole. Five of the B. fragilis group (4 B. fragilis, 1 B. vulgatus) isolates tested showed reduced susceptibility (>or=

Bacterial invasion of non-exposed dental pulp.

Anaerobic procedures were adopted to demonstrate the early bacterial invasion of non-exposed dental pulps, and to isolate and identify the bacteria. Of 19 freshly extracted teeth which originally exhibited deep dentinal lesions, clinical examination and electric pulp testing showed that nine of them had no pulpal exposure. Thus the pulps of these teeth were covered by clinically sound dentine beneath the carious lesion. Bacteria were found to have invaded the pulps of six of these nine teeth. The predominant bacteria were obligate anaerobes belonging to the genera Eubacterium, Propionibacteriu

[Effects of antibiotics and anti-bacterial components of preparations for local treatment of suppurative wounds on pathogens of odonto- genic infections].

The results of identification and sensitivity assay of 156 strains of pathogens causing odontogenic infections are presented. In the sensitivity assay antibacterial drugs were used. 42.3 percent of the strains were obligate anaerobes belonging to Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, Veillonella and Actinomyces. Significant differences in the microbial sensitivity to the drugs used for general and local therapy were detected. There was observed high sensitivity of the obligate anaerobes to gramicidin (0.02 micrograms/ml), nitazol (10 micrograms/ml), levomycetin and tetra

Alterations of the vaginal microbiome in healthy pregnant women positive for group B Streptococcus colonization during the third trimester.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae or group B Streptococcus (GBS) asymptomatically colonizes the genitourinary tracts of up to 30% of pregnant women. Globally, GBS is an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. GBS has recently been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. The potential interactions between GBS and the vaginal microbiome composition remain poorly understood. In addition, little is known about the vaginal microbiota of pregnant Egyptian women. RESULTS: Using V3-V4 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing, we examined the vaginal microbiome in GBS culture-positive pregnan

Sudden onset proptosis secondary to cavernous sinus thrombosis from underlying mandibular dental infection.

The present report concerns a patient who presented with a 4-day history of left-sided facial pain arising from a pre-existing dental infection and progressive shortness of breath. The patient had a previous diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and was being treated with methotrexate. The rapid development of a right eye proptosis necessitated urgent decompression with a lateral canthotomy and cantholysis. Imaging revealed a left facial abscess, cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST), bilateral internal jugular thrombosis and multiple lung abscesses. Blood cultures yielded Streptococcus constellatus, a

The role of anaerobic bacteria in sinusitis.

The normal oropharyngeal flora contained aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that can cause respiratory infections including sinusitis. Some of these bacteria can interfere with the growth of potential pathogens and may play a role in preventing infections. Anaerobic bacteria emerge as pathogens as the infection becomes chronic. This may be the result of the selective pressure of antimicrobial agents that enable resistant anaerobic organisms to survive, and from the development over time of conditions appropriate for anaerobic growth, which include the reduction in oxygen tension and an increase in

Bacteria invading periapical cementum.

The aim of this study was to determine whether microorganisms invade periapical cementum of human teeth from the adjacent periapical lesions. We therefore attempted to isolate microorganisms from periapical cementum through the adoption of standard anaerobic procedures for obligate anaerobes. Samples of cementum were taken from 10 amputated tooth roots at the time of apicoectomy. From two of these samples, bacteria were recovered after anaerobic incubation, but no bacteria were recovered after aerobic incubation of the same samples. Of a total of eight isolates from the cementum, seven were ob

[Actinomycosis infection of the cerebellum].

The case is presented of a 37-year-old male with a cerebellar abscess due to Actinomyces israelii. The patient was admitted after dental surgery because of fever and symptoms indicative of raised, intracranial pressure. No abnormalities were detected in peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid. CT scan revealed a space-occupying lesion in the left cerebellar hemisphere with perifocal oedema and occlusive hydrocephalus. After emergency external ventriculostomy complete removal of the mass was achieved in a two-stage surgical procedure. Culture of the pus under anaerobic conditions resulted in a

Microbiological and clinical aspects of aspiration pneumonia.

Aspiration pneumonia is characterized by a pneumonitis in a dependent segment of the lung with typical necrosis or abscess-formation in the parenchyma. Observed aspiration or predisposition to aspiration, cavitation or abscess formation, with or without empyema fluid and isolation of distinctive micro-organisms are important clues to the diagnosis. Diagnostic procedures to collect anaerobic uncontaminated secretions are transtracheal aspiration, blood cultures, pleural fluid aspiration, fibreoptic bronchoscopic protected investigations and percutaneous transthoracic aspiration. The prevalence of anaerobic bacteria in suprapubic bladder aspirates obtained from pregnant women.

The incidence of asymptomatic bacteriuria due to aerobic, facultative anaerobic and strictly anaerobic bacteria during pregnancy was determined in 185 patients admitted for complications of pregnancy, using suprapubic bladder aspiration. Anaerobic bacterial counts of 103 per ml urine or higher were detected in 6.4 per cent of the specimens. The incidence of anaerobic bacteriuria seems comparable to that of bacteriuria due to aerobic and facultative anaerobic micro organisms. In our group of patients the incidence of the latter was 5.4%. The presence of anaerobic bacteria was not confined to th

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus mitis caused by accidental human bite.

Human bite wounds are more prone to infection than animal bites, which may cause necrotizing soft tissue infections such as myositis, fasciitis. Both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms may be responsible, including Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Peptostreptococcus spp. Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by serious tissue destruction and systemic toxicity with high morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with Streptococcus mitis associated necrotizing fasciitis on the upper extremity resulting from an accidental human bite, which caused nearly fatal infection. Prophylacti

Prediction of Chronic Periodontitis Severity Using Machine Learning Models Based On Salivary Bacterial Copy Number.

Periodontitis is a widespread chronic inflammatory disease caused by interactions between periodontal bacteria and homeostasis in the host. We aimed to investigate the performance and reliability of machine learning models in predicting the severity of chronic periodontitis. Mouthwash samples from 692 subjects (144 healthy controls and 548 generalized chronic periodontitis patients) were collected, the genomic DNA was isolated, and the copy numbers of nine pathogens were measured using multiplex qPCR. The nine pathogens are as follows: Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Tannerella forsythia (Tf),
