The Association of Racism and Discrimination in Disparities of Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in the United States: An Analysis of PRAMS Data.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal mortality. Racial disparities in maternal outcomes such as maternal mortality in the United States (US) are well-documented, but the relationship of racism and/or discrimination with one's risk of developing a hypertension during pregnancy (HDP) is not well-studied. METHODS: Data from 17 sites that asked questions regarding experiences with racism and/or discrimination during pregnancy via the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) Phase 8 (2016-2020) was used. Logistic regression models were used com

Contextual Approach to Acculturative Stress Among Latina Immigrants in the U.S.

Based on Family Stress Management theory, we explored the contextual influence on acculturative stress and psychological distress. We included 639 Latinas from the National Latino Asian American Survey. We hypothesized that (a) impact of acculturative stress on psychological distress depends on specific contexts; (b) U.S. climate (i.e., perceived discrimination, happiness with U.S. move, years in the U.S.) impacts acculturative stress and psychological distress the most, and (c) contextual factors interact in impacting acculturative stress. Acculturative stress did not always lead to psycholog

Invisible Pain, Visible Inequalities: Gender, Social Agency, and the Health of Women with Fibromyalgia.

Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic nociplastic pain condition predominantly affecting women. Although often addressed within biomedical frameworks, its structural and relational dimensions remain underexplored. This study examined how social, familial, and economic factors are associated with symptom severity and self-perceived mental health among women with FM, with particular emphasis on social participation and perceived discrimination. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among women diagnosed with FM in Chile. Participants were recruited through patient organizations and

Association of Childhood Area-Level Ethnic Density and Psychosis Risk Among Ethnoracial Minoritized Individuals in the US.

IMPORTANCE: The protective ethnic density effect hypothesis, which suggests that minoritized individuals who grow up in neighborhoods with a high proportion of ethnoracial minoritized groups are protected from the effects of perceived discrimination, has not been examined among individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR-P). This level of examination may help identify intervention targets for preventing psychosis among high-risk individuals. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between area-level ethnic density during childhood, perceived discrimination, and psychosis risk outcomes a

Discrimination, chronic stress, and multimorbidity in cohort of Black and Latina transgender women with HIV: Longitudinal findings from the LITE Plus study.

Black and Latina transgender women with HIV (BLTWH) are exposed to repeated, intersecting discrimination based on race, gender, and serostatus. Minority stress theory conceptualizes discrimination as minority-specific stressors that drive health inequities. Allostatic load theory posits a pathway between discrimination and chronic disease through multisystem physiological dysregulation caused by chronic stress. To test this pathway, a longitudinal cohort of 108 BLTWH, enrolled December 2020 - June 2022 in Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC, were followed for 24 months, with biomarkers m

Discrimination and bladder health among women in the CARDIA cohort study: Life course and intersectionality perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether discriminatory experiences are associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and their impact among 972 women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort study, which recruited participants from 4 cities in the United States. METHOD: Exposure to discrimination was assessed 3 times (1992-93, 2000-01, 2010-11) and averaged across assessments. Participants separately reported whether they experienced discrimination on the basis of their gender, race or color, and socioeconomic position or social class. For each social ident

Belonging and life satisfaction among migrants: the roles of identity, social comparison, and discrimination.

This study examines how belonging, identity orientations, social comparison patterns, and perceived discrimination are associated with life satisfaction among Turkish migrants in the Netherlands. The analysis is based on cross-sectional survey data from 1,006 respondents. Ordered logit models are used to assess the associations between identity orientations, comparison patterns, perceived discrimination, and two outcomes: life satisfaction and sense of belonging to the Netherlands. The results indicate that identifying as Dutch or as a world citizen, as well as placing greater importance on co

Sociocultural factors associated with persistent prescription opioid use (PPOU) among Puerto Rican adults in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of opioid-overdose deaths have been witnessed among Hispanics and other underserved populations in Massachusetts. Puerto Rican adults (PRs) have a disproportionately higher prevalence of chronic diseases than non-Hispanic White adults-conditions linked to increased prescription opioid use and misuse. Stress indicators, including low acculturation, low social support, and perceived discrimination, have been recognized as correlates of chronic diseases. However, little research has been undertaken on how these socio-cultural factors relate to persistent prescriptio

Why benefiting from discrimination is less recognized as discrimination.

Discrimination continues to plague society, creating stark inequities between groups. While existing work has considered the role of prejudice in perpetuating discrimination, we draw on emerging research on privilege and inequity frames to offer an overlooked, complementary explanation: Objectively discriminatory decisions that are described as favoring, compared with disfavoring, are less likely to be recognized as discrimination. We further theorize this is because favoring decisions are perceived to be motivated by positive intentions. We find support for our hypotheses across eight studies

Barriers for pregnancy and perceptions of gender discrimination of urologists in training in France: Results of a national survey.

INTRODUCTION: Gender discrimination seems more prevalent in surgery than other medical specialties. In addition, female urologists are more likely to have obstetric complications and to be discouraged from starting a family during training. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of perceived gender discrimination and barriers for pregnancy during fellowship, among French urology residents and fellows. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The French Association of Urologists in Training performed a national online survey between August and September 2022. Participants were assured that t

Disparities in DSM-5 defined eating disorders by sexual orientation among U.S. adults.

OBJECTIVE: The increased occurrence of disordered eating behaviors among sexual minorities is well established; however, few studies have examined disparities in eating disorder diagnoses among this population. This study sought to examine lifetime prevalence estimates of DSM-5 defined EDs, including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED) as a function of sexual orientation. We then compared prevalence of EDs based on experiences with perceived discrimination. METHOD: A nationally representative sample of U.S. adults (N = 35,995) participating in the 2012

Protective Factors of the Longitudinal Association Between Discrimination and Mental Health Among Mexican-Origin Youth.

OBJECTIVE: The negative effects of discrimination on mental health are well established. Few longitudinal studies have investigated protective factors that could mitigate these effects for youth of Mexican origin in the United States. This 3-wave longitudinal study examined individual-, family-, peer-, and neighborhood-level protective factors attenuating the effect of discrimination-related stress on youth depressive and anxiety symptoms. METHOD: A total of surveyed 344 Mexican-origin youths (ages 12-15) from 2 Midwestern counties were surveyed longitudinally over 3 annual waves. Youths comp

The perception paradox: experiencing and witnessing skin color discrimination and self-rated health in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: An extensive body of literature has established that perceived discrimination is linked to adverse health outcomes. In Latin America, a region deemed a pigmentocracy due to its pronounced skin color-based stratification, research on the relationship between color discrimination and health remains limited and mixed. This ambiguity may reflect a perception paradox in the context of national ideologies of mestizaje (race-mixture) and racial democracy that purport colorblindness. Latin Americans tend to report high levels of witnessing color discrimination against others (vicarious d

Neighborhood Disadvantage, Parenting, and Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms in Mexican-Origin Families: Moderating Role of Discrimination.

Mexican-origin populations tend to reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods, increasing adolescents' vulnerability to internalizing symptoms. While prior research highlights neighborhood disadvantage's impact on adolescents, few studies explore its effects on both perceived parenting (maternal and paternal) and internalizing symptoms and the underlying mechanism (i.e., subjective neighborhood violence) explaining such association. Notably, adolescents' perceptions of their neighborhood may vary across adolescent discrimination experiences (i.e., ethnic and group discrimination), subsequently cont

Psychological pathways from daily discrimination to pain: a longitudinal mediation model.

Perceived discrimination, self-esteem, and self-acceptance have each been linked to pain outcomes, yet few studies have examined these factors together or investigated the psychological pathways connecting them. Grounded in the Biopsychosocial framework, this study explored the longitudinal mediating roles of self-esteem and self-acceptance in the relationship between perceived daily discrimination and pain interference. Archival data were drawn from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study, with MIDUS II (2004-2006) as Time 1 and MIDUS III (2013-2014) as Time 2. The sample included 501
