Biomechanical Voice Parameters as Potential Biomarkers for Phenotype Differentiation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a clinically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease in which bulbar involvement frequently affects speech and voice production. Although acoustic voice analysis can detect phonatory alterations in ALS, its ability to differentiate clinical phenotypes remains limited. This study investigated whether biomechanical voice parameters provide complementary information for characterizing bulbar involvement across bulbar-onset ALS (ALS-B) and spinal-onset ALS (ALS-S) and explored their association with clinical and functional measures. Met

Speech outcomes in 10-year-old children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate after one-stage lip and palate repair in the first year of life.

An evaluation of the results of one-stage repair of unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) performed at the Institute of Mother and Child, Warsaw, Poland, has shown that the dentofacial outcomes are comparable with those of the best cleft centres. The aim of this study was to assess speech development after one-stage closure of UCLP. Twenty boys and eight girls at the mean age 9.6 years consecutively treated with one-stage closure of the cleft at the mean age of 8.8 (range, 6-13) months were included. The same surgeon performed palatal repair using a vomerplasty. The evaluated outcomes include

Exploring Biomechanical Correlates in Voice Analysis of Multiple Sclerosis Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The predominant alterations in voice of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are phonatory instability, vocal asthenia and roughness, shortness of breath, hypophonia, and hypernasality. However, research on alterations of acoustic parameters has few studies and disparate results. The objective of this study was to investigate voice disturbances in patients with MS, both with objective measures (analysis of biomechanical) and subjective measures (scales and questionnaires). METHODS: This is an experimental study with a total of 20 participants with MS. Voice samples were collect

Voice changes in Parkinson's disease: What are they telling us?

Emerging evidence suggests voice dysfunction is the earliest sign of motor impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD). The complexity and fine motor control involved in vocalization may result in dysfunction here before the limbs. The voice in PD demonstrates characteristic changes on perceptual and acoustic analyses. The physiological and anatomical correlates of these have been investigated through laryngoscopy, stroboscopy, photoglottography, laryngeal electromyography, computed-tomography, pulmonary function testing and aerodynamic assessments. These have revealed numerous abnormalities includ

Development of a glottal area index that integrates glottal gap size and open quotient.

Because voice signals result from vocal fold vibration, perceptually meaningful vibratory measures should quantify those aspects of vibration that correspond to differences in voice quality. In this study, glottal area waveforms were extracted from high-speed videoendoscopy of the vocal folds. Principal component analysis was applied to these waveforms to investigate the factors that vary with voice quality. Results showed that the first principal component derived from tokens without glottal gaps was significantly (p < 0.01) associated with the open quotient (OQ). The alternating-current (AC)

Neural correlates of hemianopic completion across the vertical meridian.

Hemianopic completion refers to the perceptual completion of figures located across the vertical meridian in the context of hemianopia, such that one half of the figure falls within the blind hemifield. It can occur whether the figure is itself complete (veridical completion) or incomplete (paracompletion). Psychophysical evidence suggests that this phenomenon may be a constructive one, and may share features with completion phenomena in normal vision. The neural structures mediating hemianopic completion are unknown. Here we studied the neural activity evoked by hemianopic completion using ev

Entropy and environmental mystery.

Two studies are reported regarding the effects of entropy, lighting, and occlusion on impressions of mystery in physical environments. The theoretical context of this study was the "informational theory" of environmental preference, which, among other claims, holds that mystery can be measured by the extent to which people perceive a promise of more information if they move deeper into an environment. Entropy, in the context of this article, is visual diversity as measured using information theory. Mystery was measured by a semantic differential scale. The definition of mystery was left up to

Brain activity related to integrative processes in visual object recognition: bottom-up integration and the modulatory influence of stored knowledge.

We report evidence from a PET activation study that the inferior occipital gyri (likely to include area V2) and the posterior parts of the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri are involved in the integration of visual elements into perceptual wholes (single objects). Of these areas, the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri were more activated by tasks with recognizable stimuli than by tasks with unrecognizable stimuli. We propose that the posterior parts of the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri, compared with the inferior occipital gyri, are involved in higher level integration, due to the inv

Nasal Breathing Through a Damp Gauze Enhances Surface Hydration of the Vocal Folds and Optimizes Vocal Function.

OBJECTIVE: The present study proposes a direct surface hydration system based on nasal breathing through a damp gauze. The goal is to observe whether such direct hydration procedure positively modifies vocal fold functionality by improving voice quality and enhancing the mobility and pliability of the vocal fold mucosa. METHODS: Sixty-one young adults without voice problems were enrolled and were randomly divided into three double-blinded treatment groups. In the first group (the gauze group), participants breathed through the nose wrapped in a damp gauze for 10 minutes while doing vocal warm

Vocal quality factors: analysis, synthesis, and perception.

The purpose of this study was to examine several factors of vocal quality that might be affected by changes in vocal fold vibratory patterns. Four voice types were examined: modal, vocal fry, falsetto, and breathy. Three categories of analysis techniques were developed to extract source-related features from speech and electroglottographic (EGG) signals. Four factors were found to be important for characterizing the glottal excitations for the four voice types: the glottal pulse width, the glottal pulse skewness, the abruptness of glottal closure, and the turbulent noise component. The signifi

Visuo-spatial ability in individuals with Down syndrome: is it really a strength?

Down syndrome (DS) is associated with extreme difficulty in verbal skills and relatively better visuo-spatial skills. Indeed, visuo-spatial ability is often considered a strength in DS. However, it is not clear whether this strength is only relative to the poor verbal skills, or, more impressively, relative to cognitive ability in general. To answer this question, we conducted an extensive literature review of studies on visuo-spatial abilities in people with Down syndrome from January 1987 to May 2013. Based on a general taxonomy of spatial abilities patterned after Lohman, Pellegrino, Aldert
