BACKGROUND: Anomalies in visual and auditory perception represent an important aspect of the symptomatic manifestation of schizophrenia (ScZ). However, there are currently no instruments available that allow the assessment of the full range of auditory and visual abnormalities using a self-report measure.
METHODS: We developed the 85-item Audio-Visual Abnormalities Questionnaire (AVAQ) to assess abnormalities in auditory and visual processing. The AVAQ was validated in an online-sample of 355 healthy participants to establish the factorial structure, internal consistency and reliability of th

Recent studies on selective attention have demonstrated that the perceptual load of a task determines the processing stage at which irrelevant sensory stimuli are filtered out. Although individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have been repeatedly reported to display several kinds of abnormal behavior related to attention deficits, the neural mechanisms underlying these deficits have not been well investigated within the framework of the load dependency of selective attention. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the brain responses of adults

OBJECTIVE: To assess relations between discrete visual perceptual functions commonly affected in patients with neurodegenerative dementia and the performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).
BACKGROUND: Neuropsychologic measures are often used to predict IADL performances in dementia patients. Prior studies have focused on the contribution of higher-level memory and executive deficits to IADL. The relation between visuoperceptual dysfunction and IADL has not been studied systematically.
METHODS: Thirty-five elderly patients with neurodegenerative disorders, most diagnosed w

OBJECTIVES: The clinical differentiation of two common vestibular disorders, Meniere's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM), remains challenging and is based on criteria provided by expert panels rather than the results of diagnostic tests. We therefore investigated the hypothesis that perceptual thresholds for passive motions that activate the inner ear vestibular sensors (canals, otolith organs) can be used to improve the clinical differentiation of MD and VM.
DESIGN: Self-motion perceptual thresholds were measured in MD and VM patients using a multiaxis motion platform during movement

Many young people with autism spectrum disorder display 'challenging behaviours', characterised by externalising behaviour and self-injurious behaviours. These behaviours can have a negative impact on a young person's well-being, family environment and educational achievement. However, the development of effective interventions requires greater knowledge of autism spectrum disorder-specific models of challenging behaviours. Autism spectrum disorder populations are found to demonstrate impairments in different cognitive domains, namely social domains, such as theory of mind and emotion recognit

Anomalous perceptual experiences in adolescents are common and may predict future psychotic disorders and other psychopathologies. However, the underlying structure and their specific relationships with bullying victimizations, a typical stressor for adolescents, remain unclear. Therefore, the current study aimed to clarify the structure of perceptual anomalies as assessed by the Cardiff Anomalous Perceptions Scale (CAPS) using exploratory graph analysis (EGA), a new factor retention method based on network psychometrics. The second aim was to explore whether specific dimensions of perceptual

PURPOSE: To review the vestibular, aural, and perceptual symptoms of vestibular migraine (VM) that may present alongside vertigo.
RECENT FINDINGS: Increased research attention to the wide spectrum of symptoms presenting in VM patients has improved understanding of this disorder, with recent identification of five different VM phenotypes. Research into the clinical overlap between VM and other chronic vestibular syndromes such as persistent postural-perceptual dizziness and mal-de-debarquement syndrome reveals a range of vestibular symptoms and hints at pathophysiological connections between m

Heterogeneity in the quality and task sensitivity of vocal symptoms in the spasmodic dysphonia (SD) population contributes to controversy as to whether this is a single disorder or two disorders with different etiologies (neurogenic versus psychogenic). Perceptual and acoustic assessments of vocal symptoms are inadequate to resolve this controversy. However, myoelectric events are intimately proximal to the source of vocal disruption and may be informative. The present report employs statistical modeling of quantitative amplitude measures of electromyographic activity recorded from thyroaryten

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's Disease (PD) alters perception and somatosensory information integration, including visual dependency and judgment of body position in space. PD may be associated with Pisa syndrome (PS), a lateral deviation of the longitudinal body axis (LBA) of unknown origin. We tested whether this inclination is associated with an altered perception of the subjective visual vertical (SVV) and if these alterations are secondary effects of the LBA deviation or of a primary perceptual dysfunction. Furthermore, we investigated the contribution of different sensory modalities and dopamin

Twelve schizophrenic subjects with acoustic hallucinations in their case histories were compared with 12 healthy reference subjects and eight subjects with panic disorder in a test of three auditory masking tasks, simultaneous masking (SM), forward masking (FM) and backward masking (BM). The schizophrenic subjects showed no differences from reference subjects on SM but had higher thresholds for the two other conditions (FM and BM). Schizophrenics with very increased thresholds (n=6) had a significantly higher need for residential treatment. Thresholds for SM and BM were not, as for reference s

Shomstein, Kimchi, Hammer, and Behrmann (2010) try to capitalize on the apparent dissociation between vision and the processes that seem to mediate neglect patients' attentional selection and awareness to investigate the processing of perceptual grouping in the absence of visual attention. We argue that to assess this type of dissociation requires specific methodological adaptations to determine whether visual attention is in operation. We caution that Shomstein et al.'s article does not present convincing evidence of grouping without attentional selection because they do not directly assess a

BACKGROUND: During observation of the Necker cube perception becomes unstable and alternates repeatedly between a from-above-perspective ("fap") and a from-below-perspective ("fbp") interpretation. Both interpretations are physically equally plausible, however, observers usually show an a priori top-down bias in favor of the fap interpretation. Patients with Autism spectrum disorder are known to show an altered pattern of perception with a focus on sensory details. In the present study we tested whether this altered perceptual processing affects their reversal dynamics and reduces the perceptu

BACKGROUND: Patients with vestibular and ocular motor disorders often perceive oscillopsia, diplopia or visual hallucinations as their chief complaint. However, they often struggle with verbalizing these subjective ocular motor and visual-perceptual signs precisely, which complicates a correct diagnostic classification of the suspected pathogenic mechanism.
METHODS: In this multinational and cross-cultural feasibility study, a novel pictogram-based scale of 10 common ocular motor and visual-perceptual symptoms (called Pictogram Ocular Motor and Visual-Perceptual Symptom Scale, POVSS) was deve

Psychotic disorders have been associated with visual deficits and deviant semantic processing, making it unclear whether object detection abnormalities in psychosis originate from low-level or higher-order visual processes. The current study investigated how high-level visual processing is affected in psychosis by presenting object stimuli with equivalent low-level visual features. Outpatients with affective and nonaffective psychotic disorders, first-degree biological relatives, and psychiatrically unaffected individuals (N = 130) completed the Fragmented Ambiguous Object Task (FAOT) to asses

BACKGROUND: Perceptual assessment and objective measures of voice provide a quantifiable tool for determining the degree of glottal closure, thus helping to distinguish dysphonic voices from normal voices. The correlation between the perceptual and objective parameters of voice in dysphonic can enable the voice pathologist to be more effective in differentiating the normal voices from dysphonic voices. However, only a few studies have investigated the correlation between these measures.
OBJECTIVE: To document the differences in the perceptual and objective parameters of voice in participants

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) constitute a heterogeneous population, with speech difficulties arising from different loci within the speech processing system. Speech perception has long been implicated in SSD; however, previous findings remain mixed, partly due to differences in task demands and limited consideration of SSD subtypes. In particular, few studies have systematically examined speech perception across multiple contrast types that are explicitly structured around common developmental error patterns and across clinically defined SSD subgroups.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about body images of mothers of patients with eating disorders. In this study we investigated body image in patients with eating disorders and in their mothers, and the relationship of their body images with family functioning.
METHODS: A computer program was used that allows modeling perceived and desired body images of patients and their mothers. Patients and mothers estimated their own body images and mothers estimated the images they have of their daughters with eating disorders. The selected images were compared to anthropometric data and family functioning acc

The goal of this study was to assess whether degree of information processing load differentially affects vigilance performance in patients with schizophrenia as compared to normal controls or patients with other attentional disorders. We contrasted the performance of clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 18), with that of normal controls (n = 17), and adults with developmental attentional/learning disorders (n = 13) on simple and demanding versions of a visual continuous performance test (CPT). Patients with schizophrenia were significantly impaired on both versions of the CPT
