Ventilation/perfusion scintigraphy in children with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Childhood post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is an infrequent lung disease leading to narrowing and/or complete obliteration of small airways. Ventilation and perfusion (V/Q) scan can provide both regional and global pulmonary information. However, only few retrospective researches investigating post-infectious BO involved V/Q scan, the clinical value of this method is unknown. This preliminary prospective study was aimed to evaluate the correlation of V/Q scan with disease severity, pulmonary function test results, and prognosis in children with post-infectious BO. METHOD

Periwound Ring Enhancement on Indocyanine Green Angiography as a Prognostic Imaging Biomarker for Chronic Wound Healing.

Chronic wound healing depends on local wound-edge perfusion, which is not fully characterised by conventional vascular assessments. We evaluated whether quantitative periwound ring enhancement on indocyanine green angiography could predict 12-week wound healing. This retrospective cohort study included 71 patients with diabetic foot ulcers or pressure sores who underwent baseline indocyanine green angiography. Relative fluorescence intensity, time to peak, perfusion slope and ring continuity were quantified and integrated into an exploratory 0-8-point Perfusion Success Index. Forty-two patient

Characterization of the glymphatic system and early-phase β-amyloid imaging in Alzheimer's disease: A simultaneous PET/MR study.

Early-phase Aβ imaging can detect cerebral perfusion deficits, while glymphatic dysfunction is a key event in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, their relationship within the AD continuum remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the role of the glymphatic system (diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space, DTI-ALPS) and early-phase Aβ imaging in cognitive impairment using simultaneous PET/MR in healthy control (HC), Prodromal AD (PAD), and AD. It also examines the interaction between baseline amyloid (Aβ) burden and vascular burden i

Femoral Head Perfusion Varies Widely Following Surgical Reduction for Infantile Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip: Preliminary Findings from a Prospective Study of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Surgical hip reduction is an accepted treatment option for infantile developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) but may be complicated by the development of osteonecrosis, recently re-termed proximal femoral growth disturbance (PFGD) . Since the etiology of PFGD is likely related to compromised vascular supply to the femoral head, the need exists for an intraoperative method of assessing changes in femoral head perfusion prior to irreversible injury. This study sought to utilize contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to assess intraoperative changes in perfusion following surgical reduc

Perfusion imaging metrics after acute traumatic spinal cord injury are associated with injury severity in rats and humans.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) causes an immediate loss of neurological function, and the prediction of recovery is difficult in the acute phase. In this study, we used contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging to quantify intraspinal vascular disruption acutely after tSCI. In a rodent thoracic tSCI model, contrast-enhanced ultrasound revealed a perfusion area deficit that was positively correlated with injury severity and negatively correlated with hindlimb locomotor function at 8 weeks after injury. The spinal perfusion index was calculated by normalizing the contrast inflow at the injury ce

A multimodal tissue perfusion measurement approach for the evaluation of the effect of pimobendan, an inodilator, in a porcine sepsis model.

Sepsis is associated with hypoperfusion and organ failure. The aims of the study were: 1) to assess the effect of pimobendan on macrocirculation and perfusion and 2) to describe a multimodal approach to the assessment of perfusion in sepsis and compare the evolution of the perfusion parameters. Eighteen anaesthetized female piglets were equipped for macrocirculation monitoring. Sepsis was induced by an infusion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After the occurrence of hypotension, animals were resuscitated. Nine pigs received pimobendan at the start of resuscitation maneuvers, the others received sal

Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) in Acute Mesenteric Ischemia to Detect Intestinal Perfusion Deficits.

BACKGROUND: Acute mesenteric ischemia is a life-threatening acute condition, which requires an interdisciplinary approach, including vascular recanalization and surgical treatment. Visual evaluation of intestinal perfusion might be misleading, and therefore, additional tools are necessary to reliably be able to resect the ischemic intestine. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has been shown to be feasible and safe for real-time assessment of tissue perfusion in visceral surgery but has never been used in cases of acute mesenteric ischemia. Therefore, we applied HSI in acute mesenteric ischemia to eva

A compact hyperspectral camera for measurement of perfusion parameters in medicine.

Worldwide, chronic wounds are still a major and increasing problem area in medicine with protracted suffering of patients and enormous costs. Beside conventional wound treatment, for instance kinds of oxygen therapy and cold plasma technology have been tested, providing an improvement in the perfusion of wounds and their healing potential, but these methods are unfortunately not sufficiently validated and accepted for clinical practice to date. Using hyperspectral imaging technology in the visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) region with high spectral and spatial resolution, perfusion paramet

Hyperspectral imaging for monitoring of free flaps of the oral cavity: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provides spectral information about hemoglobin, water and oxygen supply and has thus great potential in perfusion monitoring. The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of HSI in the postoperative monitoring of intraoral free flaps. METHODS: The 14 patients receiving reconstructive head and neck surgery with a radial forearm free flap were included. HSI was performed intraoperatively (t0), on Day 1 (t1), 2 (t2), 3-6 (t3), 7-9 (t4), 10-11 (t5) and 12-15 (t6) postoperatively. Flap tissue perfusion was assessed on defined regions of in

Radiotracer Imaging Allows for Noninvasive Detection and Quantification of Abnormalities in Angiosome Foot Perfusion in Diabetic Patients With Critical Limb Ischemia and Nonhealing Wounds.

BACKGROUND: Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) imaging allows for assessment of skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion but has not been quantitatively assessed in angiosomes, or 3-dimensional vascular territories, of the foot. This study assessed and compared resting angiosome foot perfusion between healthy subjects and diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). Additionally, the relationship between SPECT/CT imaging and the ankle-brachial index-a standard tool for evaluating peripheral artery disease-was assessed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Healt

Assessment of perfusion on ventilation/perfusion scan after balloon pulmonary angioplasty in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension: expert opinion versus guidance by reference chart.

OBJECTIVE: Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is frequently used in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH)/chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease (CTED). Nevertheless, noninvasive pulmonary perfusion imaging after BPA is scarce. In this study, change in perfusion on ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scan after BPA was assessed and correlated with clinical outcomes. METHODS: Retrospectively, all consecutive patients with CTEPH/CTED patients who completed BPA and received planar V/Q scans baseline and 6 months follow-up were included. Perfusion was evaluated using gestalt interpreta

Intraventricular meningiomas show size-dependent increases in peak ASL-MRI perfusion reflecting vascular heterogeneity.

PURPOSE: The deep location and choroidal arterial supply of intraventricular meningiomas (IVMs) make preoperative vascular assessment critical for anticipating surgical complexity and hemorrhagic risk, especially in larger tumors. While arterial spin-labeling (ASL)-MRI reliably quantifies tumor blood flow in typical dural meningiomas, IVM perfusion features and heterogeneity relative to other intraventricular lesions remain poorly characterized. We hypothesized that ASL-derived perfusion metrics do not scale proportionally with increasing tumor size and that focal perfusion heterogeneity disti

Quantitative model for assessment of lower-extremity perfusion in patients with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Although diabetic and atherosclerotic vascular diseases have different pathophysiological mechanisms, the screening methods currently used for diabetic lower-extremity vascular diseases are mainly based on the evaluation methods used for atherosclerotic vascular diseases. Thus, assessment of microvascular perfusion is of great importance in early detection of lower-extremity ischemia in diabetes. PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study aimed to develop a quantitative model for evaluating lower-extremity perfusion. METHODS: We recruited 57 participants (14 healthy participants and 43

Pre-operative haemodynamic monitoring and resuscitation in hip fracture patients: Protocol for a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: In a frail patient group often suffering from dehydration, hip fracture is potentially fatal partly because of the blood loss and thus deteriorated circulation. An important goal for haemodynamic monitoring and resuscitation is early detection of insufficient tissue perfusion. "The peripheral perfusion index" reflects changes in peripheral perfusion and blood volume. We hypothesize that hip fracture patients are hypovolaemic with poor peripheral perfusion and accordingly respond to controlled fluid resuscitation. The peripheral perfusion index might reflect restricted tissue perfus

Quantitative analysis of lung perfusion in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to evaluate quantitatively the heterogeneity of lung perfusion scans in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and to compare it with the severity of disease. METHODS: Lung perfusion scans were obtained on 22 patients with PPH and 12 age-matched control subjects. The perfused area rates (PARs) were calculated by dividing the lung area in each 10% threshold width from 10% to 100% of maximal counts by total lung area. The total absolute difference in the PAR between each patient and the mean control value was assumed as the perfusion index of th

Intraoperative Determination of Bronchus Stump and Anastomosis Perfusion with Hyperspectral Imaging.

BACKGROUND: The intraoperative evaluation of bronchus perfusion is limited. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) is a newly established intraoperative imaging technique that enables a non-invasive, real-time perfusion analysis. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the intraoperative perfusion of bronchus stump and anastomosis during pulmonary resections with HSI. METHODS: In this prospective, IDEAL Stage 2a study (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT04784884) HSI measurements were carried out before bronchial dissection and after bronchial stump formation or bronchial anastomosis, respectively.
