Filariasis presenting with pericardial effusion with tamponade is rare. We report a case of a 30-year-old female who was admitted with severe dyspnea and chest pain since 2 days. Echocardiogram showed massive pericardial effusion with tamponade. Pericardial fluid aspiration drained 1.2 L of hemorrhagic fluid. Cytology examination revealed microfilaria of Wuchereria bancrofti. She was treated with diethyl carbamazine and discharged. Six weeks later, she presented again with massive pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was done. Cytology examination revealed microfilar

Acute shock in severe dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) may occur concurrently with accumulation of fluid in serous body spaces such as pleural, peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure which is sensitive to detect even a small quantity of pericardial effusion. The chest radiogram in two reported cases of DHF associated with severe shock revealed that almost half of the pleural cavity was filled with fluid. Although no signs of pericardial effusion could be determined on physical examination, ECG and radiological procedures, a small amount of f

Hypersensitivity reactions, cumulative fluid retention, and neurotoxicity are frequently seen toxicities related to docetaxel. Fluid retention may be present as edema, weight gain, or third place fluid collection. Pericardial effusion is rarely seen with docetaxel treatment. We report a 58-year-old female patient who was presented with pericardial tamponade after three cycles of docetaxel therapy.

A 67-year-old woman who underwent left breast mastectomy and right breast partial mastectomy under the diagnosis of left breast cancer and suspected right breast cancer 10 years earlier was admitted because of dyspnea. Chest computed tomography revealed pericardial fluid accumulation. The patient was treated with pericardial drainage; thereby, 800 mL of bloody fluid was removed. The cytological diagnosis was malignancy. After receiving mitomycin C instillation, she underwent systemic chemotherapy and endocrine therapy. At the last follow-up more than 5 years after the recurrence, no reaccumula

Pericardial effusion can either be an incidental finding or a manifestation of systemic or cardiac disease. It has a wide range of presentations, from asymptomatic small effusion to rapidly progressive fatal tamponade. In a trauma setting, pericardial effusion is usually attributed to hematoma collection, with the concern of clinical evidence of tamponade that can lead to cardiopulmonary collapse. The Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) is a widely used tool to diagnose pericardial effusion in trauma patients. We published this case report to emphasize that the presence of per

Postmortem CT (PMCT) is increasingly used in forensic practice, and knowledge and classification of typical hemopericardium on PMCT would help to assure correct radiological interpretation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the pericardial and pleural space fluid volumetry, and to evaluate the signs on PMCT pointing to cardiac tamponade as the cause of death, and their pitfalls. Fourteen cadavers (eleven male, three female, 49-87 [mean, 70.9] years) were examined by PMCT. The pericardial volume and pericardial findings with/without pleural space fluid collection were compared with autopsy

A 44-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug use presented to the emergency department in cardiac arrest. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) revealed a pericardial effusion with tamponade physiology. Initial landmark-guided pericardiocentesis returned blood but failed to confirm guidewire placement via POCUS. A repeat, ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis yielded purulent fluid. Subsequent drainage of 50 mL of fluid improved cardiac contractility and hemodynamics. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, and pericardial fluid cultures grew Streptococcus pneumoniae. This case

An elderly man had recurrent admissions with large symptomatic pericardial effusions. Initial computed tomography (CT) of thorax, abdomen and pelvis and pericardial fluid analysis did not reveal underlying cause. On subsequent presentation, pericardial window was formed but repeat pericardial fluid analysis and biopsy failed to give a diagnosis again. He then presented approximately after four months with worsening symptoms of dyspnoea and weight loss. General physical examination at that point noted inguinal lymphadenopathy. Repeat imaging with CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed f

Pericardial abscess is an extremely rare complication of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. We report a case of a 72-year-old woman with multiple acupuncture scars on both knees who presented with shortness of breath and general weakness. Transthoracic echocardiography and pericardiocentesis confirmed the presence of pericardial fluid collection. Staphylococcus aureus grew in both pericardial fluid and blood. Although an aggressive medical treatment including intravenous antibiotics and percutaneous drainage, the patient died 2 days after admission.

Paradoxical hemodynamic instability is defined as unexpected hemodynamic compromise that develops in a patient after pericardial fluid drainage. The overall incidence of the condition is about 5%, and it has a high in-hospital mortality rate. The condition has been reported to occur regardless of the approach that is used to drain the fluid or the underlying cause of the disease. The pathophysiology of paradoxical hemodynamic instability and the appropriate intervention are not very clear, and further studies are needed to identify appropriate preventive measures. We report a rare manifestation

BACKGROUND: Malignant pericardial effusion occurs in one tenth of all cancers. It is a very serious disorder that is mainly a secondary process due to metastasis because primary neoplasms of the pericardium such as mesotheliomas, sarcomas being exceedingly rare [corrected]. Pericardial effusion specimens are uncommon and to the best of our knowledge the current study is the largest systematic evaluation of pericardial fluid cytology performed to date.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pericardial effusion specimens from 145 patients collected over a 25 [corrected] year period were studied by cytology [co

In this report we describe the case of a 22-year-old female who presented to our hospital with a 2 week history of chest tightness and easy fatigability. Examination and chest ultrasound revealed a massive pericardial effusion with evidence of tamponade. A rapid test for HIV was positive. Diagnostic and therapeutic pericardiocentesis was performed with good clinical response and revealed serosanguinous, exudative fluid. According to national guidelines, the patient was empirically treated for tuberculous pericarditis. Recurrence of the pericardial effusion occurred after 2 weeks and the cardio

Campylobacter spp. is a gram-negative bacillus that causes infectious enteritis and consists of several species, including Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter fetus. Although C. jejuni and C. coli cause infectious enteritis primarily in immunocompetent hosts, C. fetus causes extraintestinal infections such as septicemia, meningitis, and perinatal infections in immunocompromised hosts, as well as myopericarditis in rare cases. Only a few cases of infectious myo(peri)carditis associated with C. coli in immunocompetent hosts have been reported. These studies concentrated o

BACKGROUND: Primary pericardial malignancies are rare, and myxoid tumors may mimic hemorrhagic pericardial effusions on imaging, leading to diagnostic delay.
CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old man presented with pleuritic chest pain and was diagnosed with acute pericarditis and a presumed traumatic hemorrhagic pericardial effusion. Despite anti-inflammatory therapy and pericardiocentesis yielding bloody, lymphocyte-predominant fluid with negative cytology, he experienced rapid clinical deterioration. Repeat imaging revealed an encasing pericardial mass causing severe left atrial compression and func

BACKGROUND: Torso sonography (focused assessment with sonography for trauma [FAST]) has been added to our protocols for the evaluation of penetrating torso injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our recent experience and determine whether the use of FAST is beneficial.
METHODS: From January 1999 to January 2000, patients with penetrating torso injury and no clinical indication for surgery were evaluated by sonography with a selective use of other investigations. FAST consisted of sonographic views of the peritoneum and/or pericardium to determine the presence or absence of fluid.

Clinical data and echocardiographic findings were correlated in 20 patients with pericardial effusion. Moderate to large effusions were associated with increased motion of the entire heart within the pericardial sac. A correlation was found between the estimated volume of fluid and the diastolic excursion and velocity of the right ventricular and left ventricular walls (P less than 0.01). For any given volume of fluid as estimated from the echocardiogram neoplastic effusions resulted in greater increments in wall motion (P less than 0.02). Patterns of "pseudo" mitral valve prolapse occurred an

Pericardiocentesis is a procedure performed to aspirate fluid from the pericardial space. It is most often performed as an acute therapeutic procedure in cases of massive pericardial effusion or pericardial tamponade. Our case describes an unusual complication of pericardiocentesis leading to hemorrhagic pericardial effusion and hemodynamic compromise.

INTRODUCTION: Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare, non-Langerhans histiocytosis in which pericardial involvement is diagnosed with increasing frequency and is associated with high mortality rates.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 53-year-old woman presented with progressive exertional dyspnea and pericardial effusion was discovered. Further investigations revealed the presence of a diffuse, infiltrating process and a diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease was made. An emergent pericardiocentesis by subxiphoid approach was completed but recurrent drainage obviated removal of the pigtail catheter. A pleuro-

This case involved an 89-year-old woman with a history of left nephrectomy for left renal cell carcinoma at the age of 87 years. She had been gradually accumulating pericardial effusion for the past 4 years. She presented with signs of tachycardia and hypotension suggestive of cardiac tamponade due to pericardial effusion, and pericardiocentesis was performed below the xiphoid process in the cardiology department. Serous fluid was aspirated, and malignancy was ruled out by various tests. The patient subsequently developed recurrent pericardial effusion and was admitted to the hospital. Cardiov
