Second malignancy after childhood neoplasms is a well-known complication. However, frequency differs considerably according to the types of primary neoplasm and the specifics of therapy. Ten patients with a second malignancy after being cured of the primary tumor are described. There were 2 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and one with breast cancer after Hodgkin's disease. Two patients with heritable retinoblastoma developed osteosarcomas in the irradiation field after a latent period of 7 and 14 years respectively. There was another osteosarcoma in

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a tumor of the appendix whose major clinical relevance derives from its inherent potential for peritoneal dissemination as pseudomyxoma peritonei. It sometimes poses challenges in clinical, radiological, and pathological diagnosis, and it may be confused with gynecological conditions in females. We report a case of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm presenting as firm sclerotic cystic mass and was initially suspected to be an ovarian mass in a postmenopausal woman. We review the literature for the pathogenesis and clinical implication of sclerohy

PURPOSE: We have developed a novel molecular method of diagnosis using the technique of transcriptase-reverse transcriptase concerted reaction (TRC) for the detection of cancer micrometastasis. This study prospectively examined the clinical importance of the TRC diagnosis with peritoneal lavage fluids collected from gastric cancer operations at multiple institutes.
METHODS: TRC amplification targeting carcinoembryonic antigen mRNA was applied to detect gastric cancer cells in peritoneal lavage fluids obtained during gastric cancer resections from nine different hospitals. A total of 137 patie

We report a case of fallopian tube and peritoneal lesions resected from a 10-year-old girl with Proteus syndrome. The papillary fallopian tube tumor expressed CA-125 and demonstrated negative staining for CEA, CD15, calretinin, and CK 5/6. Nondilated portions of fallopian tube exhibited evidence of an in situ component. This patient was also found to have peritoneal mesothelial hyperplasia as well as cystic peritoneal lesions of mesothelial origin, with positive calretinin staining. This case provides direct evidence of both Müllerian and mesothelial lesions arising concurrently in a patient w

INTRODUCTION: Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma (BMPM) is a rare, benign cystic neoplasm arising from the peritoneum, predominantly affecting women of reproductive age. It is characterized by a slow progression and a high recurrence rate post-surgical resection. Due to its non-specific clinical presentation, BMPM remains a diagnostic challenge.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 38-year-old female with a history of left ovarian cystectomy who presented with acute, stinging abdominal pain. Imaging studies, including ultrasound, contrast-enhanced computed tomography, and magnetic

Diagnostic laparoscopy has been an integral part of our surgical practice for over 4 years. Between 1988-1992, 100 diagnostic laparoscopies have been performed in this institution without mortality. We have found the procedure to be particularly useful in the following situation: 1) Hepatobiliary disease where it is used in conjunction with targeted liver biopsy. 2) Acute emergency cases. These include the diagnosis of acute peritonitis, abdominal trauma and in patients with suspected mesenteric ischaemia. 3) In the staging of intra-abdominal malignancy especially gastric, oesophageal, colonic

For peritoneal metastases from a primary appendiceal mucinous neoplasm to exist, the thin wall of the appendix must perforate to allow mucus or mucus plus tumor cells to gain access to the peritoneal spaces. The proportion of specimens containing tumor cells within mucus as compared to mucus only outside the appendix may have prognostic significance. The histopathology of tumor masses was determined from the specimens resected at the cytoreductive surgery (CRS). The presence versus absence of tumor cells in mucus and the proportion of specimens with tumor cells was determined and correlated wi

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare malignant neoplasm mostly occurring in the vicinity of or within the peritoneal cavity, and is uncommon in the head and neck region. Tumor location within a major salivary gland is exceptional. We report a case of a 41-year-old Chinese man with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal failure on peritoneal dialysis with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor occurring in the left submandibular gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed variably cohesive clusters of small cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and fine granular chromatin. On h

The co-existence of pelvic tumor, hydrothorax and ascites has been known since the last century. The features of this disease were described by Meigs and Cass in 1937; in the same year Roads named it Meigs syndrome. According to the original description this syndrome only included, as pelvic involvement, an ovarian neoplasm; at present it is accepted that hydrothorax and the ascites can also be associated with a uterine tumor, like a fibroma. The existence of either an ovarian or a uterine neoplasm distinguishes the typical Meigs syndrome from a pseudo-Meigs syndrome. The most likely pathogene

UNLABELLED: A myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumour arising from infiltration by leukemic cells at an anatomic site other than the bone marrow. Most commonly it precedes acute myeloid leukaemia but occasionally occurs simultaneously. It may also be associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndrome and the blast phase of chronic myeloid leukaemia. The most common sites for extramedullary tumours are bone, periosteum, soft tissue, lymph node and skin. Although this disease can affect a wide range of body sites, there are very few reports of peritoneal myeloid sarcoma o

BACKGROUND: Parasitic leiomyomas were first described as early as 1909 but are a rare condition. In recent years, due to the rise of laparoscopic surgery and power morcellation, several cases of parasitic leiomyomas associated with this surgical procedure have been reported.
METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar with the following combination of keywords: leiomyoma OR uterine neoplasms OR uterine myomectomy OR laparoscopy OR hysterectomy OR peritoneal neoplasms AND parasitic. Papers describing parasitic leiomyomas were included. The results of thes

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are routinely accompanied by peritoneal metastases at the time of diagnosis of the primary appendiceal tumor. In contrast, liver metastases and lymph node metastases are unusual.
METHODS: From an extensive database, patients with lymph node metastases identified at the time of primary appendiceal cancer resection were selected for special study. The clinical, treatment-related and histologic variables of this group of patients were statistically analyzed for their impact on overall survival.
RESULTS: From a prospectively maintained database of 685 p

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is an uncommon subtype of epithelioid mesothelioma. In contrast to malignant epithelioid mesothelioma, WDPM has a low malignant potential and an indolent clinical course. WDPM may be difficult to diagnose and differentiate from benign reactive mesothelial cells and other malignant neoplasm on cytology specimens due to the presence of papillary or tubulopapillary clusters of tumor cells. We report a case of a 63-year-old Asian male with a slowly growing left inguinal hernia mass for several years and a concurrent 8 cm mass in the peritoneal wall

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms thought to originate from the submesothelial connective tissue. SFTs have been described in a variety of sites, including the pleura, orbit, lower respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity and heart. These neoplasms are usually benign, though locally aggressive, and metastatic behaviour has been observed in some cases. We describe a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with weight loss, poor appetite, malaise, worsening dyspnoea on exertion and lower extremity oedema, who was found to have a gigantic-21×21 cm-tumour occupying the entire

The records of two cytopathology laboratories, covering an aggregate of 33 years, were searched for pleural, peritoneal and pericardial fluids reported as containing cells of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This search embraced 9,297 serous fluids from 7,389 patients. Cells of SCCs were found in the fluids from only 46 patients, illustrating the infrequency of such a finding, with most of the SCC cells originating in primary neoplasms of the lung (16), female genital tract (8) or larynx (6). All of the recognized types of SCC cells were found in these fluids. Even so, SCC cells may be mistaken

A total of 2530 consecutive bone scans were examined to evaluate the number and the type of soft tissue neoplasms detected with bone-seeking phosphonates. Sixty-eight primary or secondary soft tissue neoplasms of 63 patients accumulated 99mTc -methylene diphosphonate and 2 accumulated 99mTc -diphosphonate, and one metastasis was seen as a nonactive 'cold' focus in the urinary bladder. The localization of tumors was: 19 in the lung, 15 in the liver, 11 in the kidney, 10 in the peritoneal cavity or ascites, 5 in the large bowel, 4 in the vascular or lymphatic system, 3 in the connective tissue o

INTRODUCTION: Primary myelofibrosis (MF) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that results in debilitating constitutional symptoms, splenomegaly, and cytopenias. In patients with symptomatic splenomegaly, splenectomy remains a viable treatment option for MF patients with medically refractory symptomatic splenomegaly that precludes the use of ruxolitinib.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the clinical case of a patient who was admitted to our Department to perform a splenectomy in MF as a therapeutic step prior to an allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). A laparotomic splenectomy and excision o

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon neoplasm arising in body cavities lined by the mesothelium. Immunohistochemical stains are useful for making a diagnosis, but the correct combination of antibodies as should be selected in a comprehensive assessment. A peritoneal origin combined with desmoplastic histology is an extremely rare disease entity. Here, we report a case of the primary peritoneal malignant mesothelioma. Appendiceal cancer is rare and encompasses a diverse group of tumours ranging from low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms to high-grade adenocarcinomas. Appendiceal cancers often spread to the peritoneal cavity causing extensive mucinous dissemination and peritoneal metastases. Prognosis varies with histological subtype. Cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy is well-established as the most effective treatment achieving long-term survival in some patients. Chemotherapy regimens used to treat appendiceal cancer are extrapolated from the colorectal cancer setting, but di

Leiomyoma are commonly seen as benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. Smooth muscle tumors with unusual growth pattern are rare and include 3 primary neoplasms: intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL), benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) and disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis (DPL). DPL is a rare benign disease, often giving the appearance of metastatic ovarian or peritoneal carcinoma. It is a disease that predominately affects women at their reproductive age. The risk of malignant transformation is 2-5%. There are no standard treatment guidelines for the management of the DPL. The unusual p
