Line bisection performance in patients with personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Normal line bisection deviation to the left of the true centre has been interpreted as resulting from relative right hemisphere activation. Right hemisphere involvement has also been associated with the problems in dependency and attachment from infancy to adulthood. This hemispheric association predicts that patients diagnosed with dependent personality disorder will deviate significantly to the left on the line bisection task. METHODS: This hypothesis was tested by comparing the results of the line bisection task obtained respectively from 30 right-handed healthy volunteers an

Personality and voice disorders: a superfactor trait analysis.

To determine whether personality factors play causal, concomitant, or consequential roles in common voice disorders, a vocally normal control group and four groups with voice disorders-functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), spasmodic dysphonia (SD), and unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP)-were compared on measures of personality and psychological adjustment. Superfactor group comparisons revealed that the majority of FD and VN subjects were classified as introverts and extraverts, respectively. Comparisons involving the SD, UVFP, and control subjects did not identify consistent pers

Personality and voice disorders: a multitrait-multidisorder analysis.

To examine whether personality has causal, concomitant, or outcome status in common voice disorders, a vocally normal control group and 4 groups with voice disorders--functional dysphonia (FD), vocal nodules (VN), spasmodic dysphonia (SD), and unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP)--were compared using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ). Univariate and discriminant analyses confirmed that the FD and VN groups differed significantly from each other, the controls, and the other voice-disordered groups at both a superfactor and lower-trait level of personality description. Possible correlates of DSM-III-R personality disorders.

An association between personality disorder (PD) pathology, including symptoms of all PD types and Axis I disorders, and suicidal behaviour was studied in a series of 90 non-schizophrenic, non-bipolar in-patients of both sexes without mental retardation or organic brain syndrome. All of these patients, who scored positively on the SCID-II-PQ, were interviewed with the PDE and SCID-P, and with the Structured interview for the study of childhood trauma provided with supplementary items reflecting suicidal behaviour. Mood disorders were found to be significantly correlated with cluster C patholog

Specific comorbidity between bulimia nervosa and personality disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigates the comorbidity between bulimia nervosa (BN) and the entire range of American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd rev. ed. (DSM-III-R) personality disorders and controls for the presence of coexisting depression. METHOD: The Personality Disorders Examination (PDE), a structured interview that encompasses all 13 (provisional) DSM-III-R personality disorders, was administered to three groups of subjects: depressed BN patients (n = 15), nondepressed BN patients (n = 15), and nonpsychiatric controls (n = 15

[Personality disorders in a psychiatric unit: retrospective study].

From those patients who were admitted to the psychiatric in-patient unit of the Hospital Ramón y Cajal of Madrid across a period of eight years, those who received a diagnosis of personality disorder according to the axis II of DSM-III or DSM-III-R were selected. We analyzed the patterns of comorbidity between axis I and II, length of the admission, the percentage of readmissions and general variables as age and sex. 17.35% of the patients admitted for the first time and 27.03% of those readmitted received a clinical diagnosis of personality disorder. The most frequent disorders were: unspecif

Conduct disorder and personality disorders in hospitalized adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between DSM-III-R Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in hospitalized adolescents with and without conduct disorder. The spectrum of psychopathology associated with conduct disorder, especially personality disorder symptoms and diagnoses, remains largely unexplored. METHOD: Twenty-five inpatients were evaluated using the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents, Adolescent Version (DICA-R-A); the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children, Epidemiologic Version (K-SADS-E) (panic d

The DSM-III personality disorders section: a commentary.

The author reviews the DSM-III section on personality disorders, discusses several of its more controversial diagnoses, and suggests some possible alternatives. He attributes the continued low reliability of personality diagnoses, compared with the other major sections of DSM-III, to two inherent obstacles: the lack of clear boundaries demarcating the personality disorders from normality and from one another, and the confounding influence of state and role factors. Nonetheless, the DSM-III multiaxial system highlights the importance of personality diagnosis and, together with the provision of

[Psychological disorders in the oral healthcare practice. Borderline and other personality disorders].

Personality disorders are prevalent and increase the risk of a range of serious dental problems. In the oral healthcare practice, however, this diagnosis is often not known and the disorder is not always immediately recognizable. Trial and error may bring it to the fore. It may cause tension in the therapeutic relationship and the development of trust. The largest problems in the therapeutic relationship are encountered in patients with severe (borderline) personality disorder, often attributable to a history of (early) childhood emotional neglect and traumatization. It is important to recogni

Editorial for Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment.

In this editorial vision statement, the author expresses hope that he can provide stewardship for Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment (PDTRT) that follows in the path that his predecessors have laid over the past 12 years. The author is joined in this venture by Carla Sharp, the first associate editor in the history of the journal. He discusses open science initiatives and emphases in the journal, and the goal of PDTRT to increase diversity with regard to authors, reviewers, sample participants, and perspective. Personality disorders and outcome after multidisciplinary pain therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Interdisciplinary treatment programmes are the gold standard for patients suffering from chronic pain. However, several patient-related factors seem to influence the patients' outcome. The aim of our study was to inquire whether patients with personality disorders (PD) might benefit less from an interdisciplinary treatment programme compared to patients without PD. METHODS: A prospective, observational study with chronic pain patients attending a 5-week interdisciplinary treatment programme was performed. Main outcome parameters were psychological stabilization and pain intensity

Hypnotizability and psychopathology of patients with personality disorders.

Assessment of hypnotizability is useful in research and predicting the effects of hypnosis in clinical practice. There are few contemporary scientific reports examining the relationship between hypnotizability and psychopathological personality dimensions. The current study explores the connections between abnormal personality in psychiatric patients and the hypnotizability level. Fifty-five patients with anxiety and personality disorders who previously completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) were invited to undergo the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale - Clinical Form

Future Challenges in Psychotherapy Research for Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Individuals with personality disorders are frequently seen in mental health settings. Their symptoms typically reflect a high level of suffering and burden of disease, with potentially harmful societal consequences, including costs related to absenteeism at work, high use of health services, ineffective or harmful parenting, substance use, suicidal and non-suicidal self-harming behavior, and aggressiveness with legal consequences. Psychotherapy is currently the first-line treatment for patients with personality disorders, but the study of psychotherapy in the domain of perso

Functional MRI findings in personality disorders: A review.

Personality disorders (PDs) have a prevalence of approximately 10% in the United States, translating to over 30 million people affected in just one country. The true prevalence of these disorders may be even higher, as the paucity of objective diagnostic criteria could be leading to underdiagnosis. Because little is known about the underlying neuropathologies of these disorders, patients are diagnosed using subjective criteria and treated nonspecifically. To better understand the neural aberrancies responsible for these patients' symptoms, a review of functional MRI literature was performed. T

Personality Disorders Revisited: A Newly Proposed Mental Illness.

Personality disorders such as dependent personality disorder (DPD), among others, have shown limited academic development in terms of a more in-depth understanding or subtypes that may exist as a mental illness or associated condition. DPD was first published as a distinct personality disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 3rd edition (DSM III) psychiatry manual in 1980. Since its revision in the DSM IIIR in 1987, no significant advancements have been proposed to date. This case study reported a patient with suicidal ideation and offered a new type of DPD to ad

[Systematic review of personality disorders and sexual dysfunction].

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders and sexual response are two closely related aspects, and knowledge of the relationship between both variables will serve to provide quality care to patients. METHODS: The aim of the present study was to conduct a systematic review on the relationship between personality disorders and sexual dysfunctions. RESULTS: Fourteen scientific articles published between 2006 and 2016 met the inclusion criteria to be part of this review. This work has allowed organizing the scarce information coming from scientific works referred to the existing relations between person
