Not all patients labeled as "prosopagnosia" have a real prosopagnosia.

Since face recognition is the most powerful source of information for identifying familiar people, patients showing a multimodal defect in people recognition have been sometimes considered as affected by "prosopagnosia"-namely, by a form of visual agnosia, specifically affecting face recognition. In this note we report two anatomoclinical observations and a neuroanatomical study in which an inappropriate use of the term "prosopagnosia" was made, because the person recognition defect was not confined to the visual (face) modality, but also concerned voice and/or name of the target person. The d

Improving Miscarriage Prevention Research: a survey exploring the expectations of service users and stakeholders (IMPRESS) - a study protocol for a UK-based survey.

INTRODUCTION: Interventional clinical trials in recurrent miscarriage use varying expected effect sizes to inform their sample size calculations. Often these are not informed by what stakeholders consider a meaningful treatment effect. Adaptive trial designs may integrate stakeholder views on trial success and futility but the criteria to inform this is lacking. This study aims to understand relevant stakeholder views of what is considered a worthwhile treatment effect for miscarriage prevention interventions and what is acceptable stopping criteria in miscarriage clinical trials. METHODS AND

A novel deep neural network approach to detect and monitor cocaine drug abuse.

PURPOSE: Cocaine is one of the most commonly used drugs that may lead to physical and mental health problems. It is necessary to identify individuals having cocaine use disorder as early as possible to monitor them properly. The objective of this work is to predict the time of cocaine use in scenarios where clinical testing is not possible. The time of cocaine use is defined as how many days before the individual has used cocaine. METHODOLOGY: It is possible to predict the time of cocaine use based on personality traits and demographic information as features. The personality traits (neurotic

Features of YouTube™ videos produced by individuals who self-identify with borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Many individuals use YouTube™ to seek out information and share first-hand experiences about mental illnesses, as well as to gain a sense of community. YouTube™ use may be especially appealing when offline supports are lacking or difficult to access, and when there is a fear of stigmatisation. Borderline personality disorder (BPD), also referred to as emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD), is a complex and often stigmatised mental-health disorder. The primary objective of this study was to describe the dominant messages that individuals who self-identify with the diagnos

Understanding the contribution of family history to colorectal cancer risk and its clinical implications: A state-of-the-science review.

Persons with a family history (FH) of colorectal cancer (CRC) or adenomas that are not due to known hereditary syndromes have an increased risk for CRC. An understanding of these risks, screening recommendations, and screening behaviors can inform strategies for reducing the CRC burden in these families. A comprehensive review of the literature published within the past 10 years has been performed to assess what is known about cancer risk, screening guidelines, adherence and barriers to screening, and effective interventions in persons with an FH of CRC and to identify FH tools used to identif

Community Support for Persons with Disabilities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review.

Over the life course, persons with disabilities require a range of supports to be integrated into their communities, to participate in activities that are meaningful and necessary, and to have access, on an equal basis to persons without disabilities, to community living. We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature on community support for persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The main findings of this review concern the following: there are gaps in access to community support for persons with disabilities in LMICs; there are barriers

Detailed molecular epidemiologic characterization of HIV-1 infection in Bulgaria reveals broad diversity and evolving phylodynamics.

Limited information is available to describe the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 in Bulgaria. To better understand the genetic diversity and the epidemiologic dynamics of HIV-1 we analyzed 125 new polymerase (pol) sequences from Bulgarians diagnosed through 2009 and 77 pol sequences available from our previous study from persons infected prior to 2007. Epidemiologic and demographic information was obtained from each participant and phylogenetic analysis was used to infer HIV-1 evolutionary histories. 120 (59.5%) persons were infected with one of five different HIV-1 subtypes (A1, B, C, F1 and

A qualitative exploration of patient safety in a hospital setting in Spain: Policy and practice recommendations on patients' and companions' participation.

IntroductionPatients' and companions' participation in healthcare could help prevent adverse events, which are a significant cause of disease and disability. Before designing interventions to increase participation, it is first necessary to identify attitudes to patient safety. This study aimed to explore patients' and companions' perceptions, attitudes and experiences of patient safety, taking into account contextual factors, such as cultural background, which are not usually captured in the literature.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study with a theoretical sampling of 13 inpatients and 3

Complete genome sequence and bioinformatics analysis of nine Egyptian females with clinical information from different geographic regions in Egypt.

Egyptians are at a crossroad between Africa and Eurasia, providing useful genomic resources for analyzing both genetic and environmental factors for future personalized medicine. Two personal Egyptian whole genomes have been published previously by us and here nine female whole genome sequences with clinical information have been added to expand the genomic resource of Egyptian personal genomes. Here we report the analysis of whole genomes of nine Egyptian females from different regions using Illumina short-read sequencers. At 30x sequencing coverage, we identified 12 SNPs that were shared in

A Conversational Agent for Providing Personalized Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Support: Protocol for Chatbot Implementation and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Chatbots have the potential to reduce barriers to preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including lack of awareness, misconceptions, and stigma, by providing anonymous and continuous support. However, in the context of PrEP, chatbots are still nascent; they lack personalized informational expertise, peer experiential expertise, and human-like emotional support to facilitate future PrEP uptake. These personalized and relatable forms of support are crucial for increasing engagement, influencing health decisions, and fostering resilience and well-being. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describ

Parent-child discrepancies in reports of pre- and early adolescent level of personality functioning.

Given the research consensus that personality disorder often onsets in adolescence, more work is needed to investigate parent-child discrepancies in reporting on personality disorder, particularly during the pre- and early adolescent period when more significant impairment in personality functioning may be developing or can already be observed. The current study examined concordance of parent- and child-reported level of personality functioning (LPF, as defined in the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders) among pre- and early adolescents and examined the extent to which this concor

Comments on Dermatologists' TikTok Videos on Atopic Dermatitis: Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in the world. It has become an important space for sharing information on a wide range of topics, including medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Advice on skin conditions has become popular on TikTok, and most previous research in this area focuses on the credibility of the information being shared. However, little research has focused specifically on physician-created videos and their audience engagement and interaction. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to (1) characterize the audience's online response to board-

Relevance and consequence of economic and social resources of severely ill persons and their informal caregivers at the end-of-life: a systematic review of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Life-limiting illnesses often lead to complex care needs and multifaceted support requirements for both severely ill persons and their informal caregivers, particularly at the end of life. The extent to which these needs are met may be significantly influenced by available economic and social resources. However, an in-depth understanding of how such resources shape end-of-life experiences is still missing. Therefore, our systematic review of qualitative studies aimed to explore and understand the perceptions of severely ill persons at the end of life and their informal caregivers r

Taking Leave During Residency: Types of Absences and Subsequent Delays and Variations in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medical Board Pass Rates.

There is limited literature examining the reasons physical medicine and rehabilitation residents take an extended leave of absence during residency and the impact of leave on board examination performance. Such information could better inform leave policies, help guide residency program directors, and potentially destigmatize taking leave. Study objectives were to describe the characteristics of physical medicine and rehabilitation residents who take leave during residency, compare differences in part I (written) and part II (oral) certification examination performance, and determine the preva

Digital Health: Tracking Physiomes and Activity Using Wearable Biosensors Reveals Useful Health-Related Information.

A new wave of portable biosensors allows frequent measurement of health-related physiology. We investigated the use of these devices to monitor human physiological changes during various activities and their role in managing health and diagnosing and analyzing disease. By recording over 250,000 daily measurements for up to 43 individuals, we found personalized circadian differences in physiological parameters, replicating previous physiological findings. Interestingly, we found striking changes in particular environments, such as airline flights (decreased peripheral capillary oxygen saturatio
