Occupational pesticide exposure and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adolescent pesticide applicators in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental chemicals, including organophosphorus pesticides, is associated with behavioral disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the impact of occupational pesticide exposure on ADHD development in adolescents has not been examined. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between exposure to chlorpyrifos and ADHD symptoms among adolescents in Egypt. METHODS: Adolescent pesticide applicators and non-applicators, 12-21 years old, participated in a 10-month longitudinal study examining health effects from pesticide exposure. Repeat

Enhancement of Pesticide Peak Response in GC-MS in the Presence of Multiple Co-Existing Reference Pesticides.

We carried out a collaborative study in six laboratories to confirm the universality of the enhancing effect of co-existing reference pesticides on the GC-MS peak response to a target pesticide (malathion, procymidone, or flucythrinate). First, we confirmed the response enhancement of the target pesticides with increasing numbers of co-existing reference pesticides in solution. Then, using diluted green soybean matrix, we analyzed the target pesticides with two types of matrix-matched calibration, containing the target pesticides or 166 other pesticides. In both cases, the response-enhancing e

Emerging pesticide metabolites in groundwater and surface water as determined by the application of a multimethod for 150 pesticide metabolites.

A recently developed multimethod for the determination of 150 pesticide metabolites was exemplarily applied to 58 samples of groundwater and surface water. 37 of these metabolites were detected in at least two samples with a concentration ≥0.025 μg/L. The detected metabolites were ranked according to their concentration and frequency of detection. Findings are clearly dominated by metabolites of chloroacetanilide herbicides, but metabolites of sulfonylurea and thiocarbamate herbicides and other herbicides (dichlobenil) together with metabolites of some fungicides (tolylfluanid, chlorothalonil,

Pesticide use by persons who reported a high pesticide exposure event in the agricultural health study.

Almost 16% of the pesticide applicators in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) cohort (a cohort that includes 52,629 private applicators) reported having a high pesticide exposure event (i.e., an incident or experience while using a pesticide that caused an unusually high personal exposure). Pesticides involved in these events were compared to the frequency with which specific pesticides were ever used by the AHS cohort. Generally, pesticides with greater acute toxicity were more frequently involved with the high pesticide exposure event than were other pesticides. Whereas it is clear that the

Pesticides' Cornea Permeability-How Serious Is This Problem?

Background: A total of 348 pesticides from different chemical families (carbamates, organochlorines organophosphorus compounds, pyrethroids, triazines and miscellaneous) were investigated in the context of their cornea permeability and potential to cause eye corrosion. Methods: Multivariate models of cornea permeability based on compounds whose cornea permeability has been determined experimentally were proposed. The models, applicable to compounds across a relatively broad lipophilicity range (e.g., pesticides with octanol-water partition coefficient log P up to ca. 8), assume a reverse-parab

Pesticides have negative effects on non-target organisms.

Pesticides affect a diverse range of non-target species and may be linked to global biodiversity loss. The magnitude of this hazard remains only partially understood. We present a synthesis of pesticide (insecticide, herbicide and fungicide) impacts on multiple non-target organisms across trophic levels based on 20,212 effect sizes from 1,705 studies. For non-target plants, animals (invertebrate and vertebrates) and microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), we show negative responses of the growth, reproduction, behaviour and other physiological biomarkers within terrestrial and aquatic systems. The neurotoxicity of pesticides: Implications for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, and no effective cure is currently available. Neuropathologically, PD is characterized by the selective degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and by the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (aSyn)-rich proteinaceous inclusions within surviving neurons. As a multifactorial disorder, approximately 85 % of PD cases are sporadic with unknown etiology. Among the many risk factors implicated in PD, exposure to neurotoxic pesticides stands out as a significant contributor. While the effects of many

Impact of pesticides on marine coral reef foraminifera.

Our laboratory study looked into how pesticides affect the foraminifera species Heterostegina depressa and their obligatory algal endosymbionts. We incubated the foraminifera separately with different types of pesticides at varying concentrations (1 %, 0.01 % and 0.0001 %); we included the insecticide Confidor© (active substance: imidacloprid), the fungicide Pronto©Plus (tebuconazole), and the herbicide Roundup© (glyphosate). Our evaluation focused on the symbiont's photosynthetically active area (PA), and the uptake of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and nitrogen (nitrate) to determine the v

Phthalates, adipates, BPA, and pesticides in school meals.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to phthalates, adipates, bisphenol-A (BPA), and pesticides may have important health consequences for children, but little is known regarding their presence in school meals, a major food source for children. The aims of this study were to determine the presence of phthalates, adipates, BPA, and pesticides in school meals. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, n = 50 school meal components were collected from four school districts in New England (n = 8 elementary/K-8 schools) differing preparation methods (on-site scratch cooking and pre-packaged heat and serve meals wi

Pesticides and Parkinson's disease: Current and future perspective.

Inappropriate use of pesticides has globally exposed mankind to a number of health hazards. Still their production is rising at the rate of 11 % annually and, has already exceeded more than 5 million tons in 2000 (FAO 2017). Plenty of available data reveals that pesticides exposures through agricultural use and food-preservative residue consumption may lead to neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive motor impairment and a neurodegenerative disorder, considered as the leading source of motor disability. Pesticides strongly

Modeling pesticides toxicity to Sheepshead minnow using QSAR.

Nowadays, the environmental risk caused by the widespread use of pesticides and their ubiquitous residuals has received more and more attention in academia and regulatory agencies. Due to the large number of pesticides used in agriculture and their adverse effects on all living organisms and the numerous end-points, it is necessary to employ the in silico tools to quickly highlight hazardous pesticides. In this study, we have evaluated the toxicity of pesticides against Sheepshead minnow with the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) approach. The models for the specific-type (in

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and their response to pesticides.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbioses with the majority of plant species and can provide multiple benefits to the host plant. In agro-ecosystems, the abundance and community structure of AMF are affected by agricultural management practices. This review describes and discusses current knowledge on the effects of inorganic and organic chemical pesticides on AMF in the conflicting area between agricultural use and environmental concerns. Variable effects have been reported following chemical pesticide use, ranging from neutral to positive and negative. Moreover, a species-specific re

Agricultural pesticides and veterinary substances in Uruguayan beeswax.

Over the last decade, Uruguay has expanded and intensified its rainfed crop production. This process has affected beekeeping in several ways: for example, by reducing the space available. This has increased the density of apiaries, the risk of varroosis and acaricide use. Additionally, the dominance of no-tillage crops has increased the frequencies of application and of loads of pesticides in regions where such crops share the land with beekeeping and honey production. Therefore, the exposure of bees to xenobiotics (agricultural pesticides and veterinary products) has increased in line with po

Endocrine Activities of Pesticides During Ozonation of Waters.

Two yeast-based bioassays were used to assess the endocrine activity potential of transformation products formed during the ozonation of water containing a variety of pesticides (propiconazole, atrazine, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [2,4-D], tebuconazole, climbazole, myclobutanil, irgarol, terbutryn, dicamba, mecoprop and diuron). Ozone experiments were conducted first in reverse osmosis water to isolate the effects of the pesticides and then in synthetic wastewater and wastewater effluent to investigate whether the results translated to more complex matrices. The findings demonstrate the re

Improving Mitochondrial Function Protects Bumblebees from Neonicotinoid Pesticides.

Global pollination is threatened by declining insect pollinator populations that may be linked to neonicotinoid pesticide use. Neonicotinoids over stimulate neurons and depolarize their mitochondria, producing immobility and death. However, mitochondrial function can be improved by near infrared light absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondrial respiration. In flies, daily exposure to 670nm light throughout life increases average lifespan and aged mobility, and reduces systemic inflammation. Here we treat bumble bees with Imidacloprid a common neonicotinoid. This undermined ATP and rapid

[Neurotoxicity of pesticides: its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases].

Several epidemiological studies suggest that pesticides could lead to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Among pesticides, insecticides appear more neurotoxic than others but the neurotoxic mechanisms leading to adverse health effects remain unclear. The currently used pesticides such as rotenone and paraquat could disrupt mitochondrial bioenergetic function, reactive oxygen metabolism, redox function and promote α-synuclein aggregation. In addition, recent studies demonstrate that genetic susceptibility to Parkinson's disease could monitor pesticide susce
