Beneficial Effect of Kidney Bean Resistant Starch on Hyperlipidemia-Induced Acute Pancreatitis and Related Intestinal Barrier Damage in Rats.

Accumulating attention has been focused on resistant starch (RS) due to its blood-lipid-lowering activities. However, reports on the potential bioactivities of RS for preventing hyperlipidemia acute pancreatitis (HLAP) are limited. Therefore, in this study, an acute pancreatitis model was set up by feeding a hyperlipidemia diet to rats, and subsequently evaluating the anti-HLAP effect of RS in kidney beans. The results show that the IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α of serum in each RS group were decreased by 18.67-50.00%, 7.92-22.89%, and 8.06-34.04%, respectively, compared with the model group (MOD). I

Morphological details of the projection from the presubiculum to the entorhinal area as shown with the novel PHA-L immunohistochemical tracing method in the rat.

Iontophoretic injections of the lectin, phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) were made into the presubiculum of rats. The anterogradely transported lectin was visualized by using an anti-PHA-L antibody in combination with immunohistochemistry. The PHA-L tracing method revealed morphological details of the projection of the presubiculum to the ipsi- and contralateral medial entorhinal area usually not seen with other anterograde transport techniques. Fine varicose fibers form a dense terminal plexus in the deep parts of layer III. In layer II and deep layer I, the fibers form column-like

New legume sources as therapeutic agents.

This review evaluates the potential health benefits of three legume sources that rarely appear in Western diets and are often overlooked as functional foods. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) and isolated fenugreek fractions have been shown to act as hypoglycaemic and hypocholesterolaemic agents in both animal and human studies. The unique dietary fibre composition and high saponin content in fenugreek appears to be responsible for these therapeutic properties. Faba beans (Vicia faba) have lipid-lowering effects and may also be a good source of antioxidants and chemopreventive factors. Mun

Cap formation on lymphocytes from patients with leukemic diseases induced by four different lectins.

When ficoll purified peripheral blood lymphocytes were treated with fluorescein conjugated lectins from lentils (LCH), castor beans (RCA) and phaseolus coccineus beans (L-and E-PHA) for 15 min and the percentages of the cap forming cells were examined, the values of leukemic lymphocytes were reduced compared to the values obtained with normal lymphocytes. The reduction was more than half in patients with acute and chronic myelogenous leukemia and immunoblastoma, it was only one quarter in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and lymphosarcoma. The lowest number of cap

Somatic Embryogenesis in Common BeanPhaseolus vulgaris L.

Common bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. has been shown to be a recalcitrant plant to induce somatic embryogenesis (SE) under in vitro conditions. An alternative strategy to yield SE is based upon the use of a cytokinin (benzyladenine) coupled with osmotic stress adaptation instead of the auxin-inducing SE in common bean. Here we described the induction of proembryogenic masses (PEM) derived from the apical meristem and cotyledonary zone of zygotic embryos, from which secondary SE indirect embryogenesis emerged. Maturation of SE was achieved by using osmotic stress medium and converted to plants. Lon

Loss of L-PHA-, PNA-, or ConA-reactive oligosaccharides is associated with a poor prognosis in human Burkitt's lymphoma.

The expression of cell surface oligosaccharides is associated with various biological phenomena. To clarify the relationship between lectin binding and the survival of patients with Burkitt's lymphoma, tumor samples from nine patients with Burkitt's lymphoma were analyzed by lectin histochemistry. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that survival is significantly shorter for patients with negative reactivity for lectins from Phaseolus vulgaris (L-PHA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), or Canavalia ensiformis (ConA) than for those with positive reactivity for these lectins. Immunohistochemistry for N-acetylglu

Unique double-helical packing of protein molecules in the crystal of potassium-independent L-asparaginase from common bean.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) encodes three class 2 L-asparaginase enzymes: two potassium-dependent enzymes [PvAIII(K)-1 and PvAIII(K)-2] and a potassium-independent enzyme (PvAIII). Here, we present the crystal structure of PvAIII, which displays a rare P2 space-group symmetry and a unique pseudosymmetric 41-like double-helical packing. The asymmetric unit contains 32 protein chains (16 αβ units labeled A-P) organized into two right-handed coiled arrangements, each consisting of four PvAIII (αβ)2 dimers. Detailed analysis of the crystal structure revealed that this unusual packing originat

Growth and metal accumulation response of Vigna radiata L. var PDM 54 (mung bean) grown on fly ash-amended soil: effect on dietary intake.

Plants of Vigna radiata L. var. PDM 54 (mung bean) were grown in soil amended with different amounts (10 and 25%) of fly ash (FA). Although total metal content increased with increasing FA amendment, DTPA-extractable metals were higher for 10% FA. Accumulation of metals by the plants increased with increasing FA amendment and was greater in shoots than in roots (except for Mn and Cu) and seeds (except Mn). The total daily intake (TDI) of all the tested metals in seeds was within the recommended dietary allowance (RDA)/provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) for adults, except for Cd, which w

Evaluation of photoinhibition and development of stress tolerance index to identify photosynthetically adapted and stress tolerant germplasm accessions of tepary bean.

Knowledge about photosynthetic adaptation and stress tolerance in tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius) accessions under acidic soil and high‑temperature conditions in the Colombian Amazon is limited. We developed a stress tolerance index (STI) as a helpful scorecard based on physiological measurements of 323 accessions that were grown in acidic soil under field and screenhouse conditions and were evaluated under well‑watered and water‑stressed treatments at dawn and midday. Based on STI and complementary photosynthetic traits, accessions were classified into five adaptive categories (highly: n

Efficacy of Trichoderma spp. spore suspensions against cotton-infesting spider mites (Acari: Tetranychidae).

Spider mites, particularly Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. turkestani Ugarov and Nikolskii (Acari: Tetranychidae), are major agricultural pests, and their increasing resistance to chemical acaricides underscores the need for alternative control strategies. This study explored the biocontrol potential of Trichoderma spp. against these mites. Specifically, we evaluated (1) the efficacy of spore suspensions from five isolates of four Trichoderma species (Trichoderma afroharzianum, T. guizhouense, T. harzianum and T. virens) and their combinations on different biological stages of T. urticae, (2)

Spraying calcium chloride helps to enhance the resistance of kidney bean plants to western flower thrips.

BACKGROUND: The western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a significant pest in horticulture and ornamental agriculture. While exogenous calcium (Ca) has been shown to confer plant immune responses against thrips, the detailed mechanisms of this interaction remain to be elucidated for improved thrips management strategies. This study aimed to assess the impact of exogenous Ca on WFT feeding behavior and to explore its role in enhancing the defense mechanisms of kidney bean plants against WFT attacks. We compared WFT feeding preferences and efficiency

Is protection against florivory consistent with the optimal defense hypothesis?

BACKGROUND: Plant defense traits require resources and energy that plants may otherwise use for growth and reproduction. In order to most efficiently protect plant tissues from herbivory, one widely accepted assumption of the optimal defense hypothesis states that plants protect tissues most relevant to fitness. Reproductive organs directly determining plant fitness, including flowers and immature fruit, as well as young, productive leaf tissue thus should be particularly well-defended. To test this hypothesis, we quantified the cyanogenic potential (HCNp)-a direct, chemical defense-systemical

Preservation of integrity and activity of Haberlea rhodopensis photosynthetic apparatus during prolonged light deprivation.

The effect of prolonged light deprivation on ultrastructure, pigment composition and functions of photosynthetic apparatus of the resurrection plant Haberlea rhodopensis Friv. (Gesneriaceae) was studied. For this purpose, intact plants were kept in darkness for up to 6 months. Haberlea rhodopensis demonstrated extraordinary ability to preserve its photosynthetic machinery intact despite complete absence of light. During the first 4 weeks of light deprivation, we observed preservation of pigment content, chloroplast ultrastructure and a decrease in the rate of CO(2) assimilation. The signs of d

Complex odor from plants under attack: herbivore's enemies react to the whole, not its parts.

BACKGROUND: Insect herbivory induces plant odors that attract herbivores' natural enemies. Assuming this attraction emerges from individual compounds, genetic control over odor emission of crops may provide a rationale for manipulating the distribution of predators used for pest control. However, studies on odor perception in vertebrates and invertebrates suggest that olfactory information processing of mixtures results in odor percepts that are a synthetic whole and not a set of components that could function as recognizable individual attractants. Here, we ask if predators respond to herbivo

Response of predatory mites to a herbivore-induced plant volatile: genetic variation for context-dependent behaviour.

Plants infested with herbivores release specific volatile compounds that are known to recruit natural enemies. The response of natural enemies to these volatiles may be either learned or genetically determined. We asked whether there is genetic variation in the response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis to methyl salicylate (MeSa). MeSa is a volatile compound consistently produced by plants being attacked by the two-spotted spider mite, the prey of P. persimilis. We predicted that predators express genetically determined responses during long-distance migration where previously lea

Essential compounds in herbivore-induced plant volatiles that attract the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi.

Carnivorous arthropods use volatile infochemicals emitted from prey-infested plants in their foraging behavior. Although several volatile components are common among plant species, the compositions differ among prey-plant complexes. Studies showed that the predatory mite Neoseiulus womersleyi is attracted only to previously experienced plant volatiles. In this study, we identified the attractant components in prey-induced plant volatiles of two prey-plant complexes. N. womersleyi reared on Tetranychus kanzawai-infested tea leaves showed significant preference for a mixture of three synthetic c

Immunochemical detection of the Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen (T-antigen) on platelet plasma membranes.

Platelet plasma membranes were found to possess the disaccharide beta-D-galactosyl (1-3)-N-acetyl-D-galactosamine which was measured by gas chromatography after release by alkaline borohyride treatment and desialylation. Immunological evidence using the specific lectins from Arachis hypogoea and Agaricus bisporus and an anti-T serum confirmed the presence of this disaccharide, the immunodominant group of the Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen (T-antigen). This receptor was only found after prior neuraminidase treatment indicating that it is normally a cryptic antigen, i.e. masked by sialic acid in t

Optimizing Mechanical, Moisture-Based, and Enzymatic Pretreatments to Improve Dehulling Outcomes and Nutritional Quality in Four US Dry Bean Market Classes.

Dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are a nutrient-dense and sustainable protein source, with potential for use as a food ingredient, but strong adhesion between the seed coat and cotyledon limits processing efficiency. This study evaluated mechanical and moisture-based pretreatments, with and without enzymatic supplementation, to improve dehulling performance across four major US market classes (black, pinto, navy, and Great Northern) and assessed the nutritional quality of resulting cotyledon and hull fractions. Small-scale trials identified that moisture tempering to 40% combined with bran-cr

Effect of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) on the antioxidant and antibacterial activities in Chilean 'sapito' common beans.

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are a nutritionally valuable crop with high levels of bioactive compounds, including phenolics with antioxidant and antibacterial properties. However, the functional potential of local Chilean landraces remains underexplored. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can influence plant metabolism, enhancing the accumulation of secondary metabolites. This study evaluates the effect of PGPB (Bacillus proteolyticus Cyn1, Bacillus safensis Cyn2, and their consortium) on the total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity, and antibacterial activity of extracts

Use of beneficial microorganisms in bean cultivation: strategies employed to increase productivity.

The common bean is of great importance for human nutrition worldwide as its grain is a cheap source of protein, but it has a high-cost production system due to the use of synthetic inputs such as nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. An alternative to promote the sustainability of the production system and increase crop productivity is the use of co-inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) to reduce and/or replace the use of nitrogen fertilizers and pest and disease control products. Since 2010, Brazil has stood out on the international stage with resear
