Developmental disorders of the fetus in some arthropod-borne virus infections.

A number of arboviruses have been associated with congenital defects in domestic aminals and man. In this review comparison is made of the temporal association between epidemics of arboviruses affecting man and animals in which there is an obvious relationship between the infection and the fetal defects, and arboviruses which cause no overt clinical symptoms in the vertebrate host but result in deformities of the fetus. The danger to the fetus following the use of live attenuated virus vaccines against several important arbovirus diseases is also examined. It is concluded that arboviruses whic

Magnitude of the host nutritional responses to infection.

This review describes the scope, complexity, and magnitude of host nutritional responses throughout the course of an infectious process. These responses include prominent changes in nitrogen and protein metabolism, altered rates of carbohydrate and lipid production and utilization, and changes in mineral, electrolyte, trace element, and vitamin metabolism. It is postulated that these responses develop in a relatively predictable sequence which is influenced by the adequacy of host antimicrobial defense mechanisms, the severity and duration of illness, and specific localization of an infectious

Efficient Convolutional Neural Network Model for the Taxonomy and Sex Identification of Three Phlebotomine Sandfly Species (Diptera, Psychodidae, and Phlebotominae).

Sandflies, small insects primarily from the Psychodidae family, are commonly found in sandy, tropical, and subtropical regions. Most active during dawn and dusk, female sandflies feed on blood to facilitate egg production. In doing so, they can transmit infectious diseases that may cause symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle pain, anemia, skin rashes, and ulcers. Importantly, sandflies are species-specific in their disease transmission. Determining the gender and species of sandflies typically involves examining their morphology and internal anatomy using established identification keys. H

A novel flavivirus strain detected in phlebotomine sandflies in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Aim Phlebotominae sandflies are primary vectors of phleboviruses, causing the sandfly fever disease. The aim of this study was to detect and report the presence of flaviviruses in Phlebotominae sandflies captured in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods After a microscopic and morphometric analysis, the final identification of collected Phlebotomus specimens was confirmed by PCR, using a hemi-nested polymerase chain reaction on extracted and reversely transcribed RNA. Results We obtained a 155 nt long fragment of the viral non-structural protein 5 (NS5) gene (GenBank accession no. MN090154). The acq

Antibody Response to Toscana Virus and Sandfly Fever Sicilian Virus in Cats Naturally Exposed to Phlebotomine Sand Fly Bites in Portugal.

Phlebotomine sand fly-borne pathogens such as Leishmania spp. and phleboviruses are emerging threats to humans and animals worldwide. The aim of this work was to evaluate the exposure of cats from Portugal to Toscana virus (TOSV) and Sandfly Fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) and assess the associated risk factors. The possible association between exposure to Phlebotomus perniciosus saliva with TOSV and SFSV was also investigated. Out of 369 cats tested, 18 (4.9%, n = 365) were seropositive for TOSV, and eight (2.2%, n = 367) were seropositive for SFSV. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showe

Sandflies and sandfly-borne infections of humans in Central Europe in the light of climate change.

In Europe, sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are typical Mediterranean faunal elements of low expansivity, which are widely distributed in more than 20 species in many parts of Southern Europe. A few species have extended their distribution to the northwest invading extramediterranean regions (Western, Eastern Europe); any occurrence in Central Europe north of the Alps was excluded until recently. Since 1999 sandflies have been found in several parts in Germany and in Belgium; originally these records were ascribed to climate change and global warming. Meanwhile, the more likely

Sandfly fever among Swedish tourists.

All clinical and serologically confirmed cases of sandfly fever among Swedish tourists during 1986-1989 were investigated. A total of 37 cases of Sicilian virus sandfly fever and 1 case of Naples virus sandfly fever were recorded from Cyprus. One case of Toscana virus infection was documented from Spain. The clinical and laboratory findings did not differ from those in previous reports, except for elevated aminotransferase levels. A questionnaire, that offered a possibility to estimate the number of cases that had not been reported, was sent to 713 tourists who had visited different hotels in

Human seroprevalence of Toscana virus and Sicilian phlebovirus in the southwest of Portugal.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is emergent in the Mediterranean region and responsible for outbreaks of encephalitis or meningoencephalitis. Sicilian phlebovirus (SFSV) cause epidemics of febrile illness during the summer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of antibodies against TOSV and SFSV in humans in the southwest of Portugal. Neutralizing antibodies to TOSV and SFSV were respectively detected in 5.3% and 4.3% out of 400 human sera tested highlighting the need to increase public health awareness regarding phleboviruses and to include them in the differential diagnosis in patients pr

Histological description of the lymphadenopathy related to Toscana virus infection. Report of a case.

Toscana virus (TOSV) infection is a frequent cause of meningitis in central Italy during summer. The disease generally has a benign course. Rarely, the infection produces a severe disease, with encephalitis and signs of systemic involvement, including lymphadenopathy. Since there is no clinical necessity of performing lymph node biopsy in such cases, the histopathological feature of TOSV-related lymphadenitis is not known. We herein present a case in which lymphadenopathy preceded the onset of meningitis. The excised lymph node showed a non-specific mixed-type lymphoid hyperplasia, with follic

Neutralization-based seroprevalence of Toscana virus and sandfly fever Sicilian virus in dogs in the Republic of Kosovo.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are the key vectors for phleboviruses (order Hareavirales and family Phenuiviridae), of which some are associated with febrile diseases and nervous system infections. In the Mediterranean Basin, Toscana virus (TOSV; Phlebovirus toscanaense) and sandfly fever Sicilian viruses (SFSV; Phlebovirus siciliaense) are important human pathogens, and their endemicity has been known for decades, particularly in the Balkan countries. While the circulation of both viruses is highly evident among humans and livestock in the Central Balkan country Kosovo, data from compani

[Acute Toscana virus infection in an anti-HIV positive patient].

Sandfly fever is an infectious disease transmitted to people through sandfly bites. It usually takes three days and causes chills, high fever, headache, nausea-vomiting and myalgia. The causative agent, namely sandfly fever virus (SFV), is a member of the Bunyaviridae family, Phlebovirus genus. Toscana virus (TOSV) is a serotype of SFV, as so Sicilian and Naples viruses. Seroprevalence studies have demonstrated that SFV infections which have mild symptoms or asymptomatic, can be overcome. Studies concerning TOSV infections in Turkey are limited to a small number of regional seroprevalence surv

Clinic-epidemiologic study of human infection by Granada virus, a new phlebovirus within the sandfly fever Naples serocomplex.

Granada virus (GRV), a new phlebovirus within the Naples serocomplex, has been recently described in phlebotomine sandflies from Spain. The presence of anti-GRV immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies was investigated by indirect fluorescence assay (IFA) and neutralization test (NT) in 920 serum samples from the Granada population. By IFA, an overall GRV seroprevalence of 15.8% (N = 145) was observed, significantly increasing up to 65 years. NT was positive in 18% of anti-GRV IFA-positive samples. IgG antibodies against Toscana virus (TOSV), a hyperendemic phlebovirus within Granada province, were d

NSs of the mildly virulent sandfly fever Sicilian virus is unable to inhibit interferon signaling and upregulation of interferon-stimulated genes.

Phleboviruses (order Bunyavirales, family Phenuiviridae) are globally emerging arboviruses with a wide spectrum of virulence. Sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) is one of the most ubiquitous members of the genus Phlebovirus and associated with a self-limited, incapacitating febrile disease in travellers and military troops. The phleboviral NSs protein is an established virulence factor, acting as antagonist of the antiviral interferon (IFN) system. Consistently, we previously reported that SFSV NSs targets the induction of IFN mRNA synthesis by specifically binding to the DNA-binding domain o

[Climate change influences the incidence of arthropod-borne diseases in the Netherlands].

Climate change is associated with changes in the occurrence of arthropod-borne diseases. It is difficult to foresee which arthropod-borne diseases will appear in the Netherlands due to climate change. Climate change influences the prevalence of ticks and may lead to a further increase in Lyme disease and an increased risk of the introduction of rickettsioses. With further warming of the climate there is a real possibility of settlement of the mosquito Aedes albopictus and introduction of the sandfly in the Netherlands. Whether this will lead to circulation of micro-organisms transmitted by the

[Pappataci fever].

Sandfly fever virus is known to cause pappataci fever. The sandfly fever virus belongs to the Genus Phlebovirus (family: Bunyaviridae) and is endemically found in areas of South Europe, Asia and Africa. In Germany, pappataci fever is only described in connection with travelling to endemic areas. We report on a 15 year-old girl suffering from sandfly fever virus infection after vacation in Turkey. The initial symptoms started with fever for about three days, frontal headache, nausea and arthralgia. After a short time of clinical improvement symptoms recurred and our patient entered hospital wit

Emerging evidence of sand fly fever virus transmission in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Sand fly fever virus (SFFV) infection is an acute self-limiting febrile illness caused by phleboviruses and transmitted by sand flies of the Phlebotomus species. The disease has been reported in the Mediterranean region, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, and is now considered to be expanding into new geographic areas. Clinically, SFFV infection closely resembles acute dengue fever. AIM: To detect other possible infection including SSFV in patients with clinically suspected dengue fever with negative serology results for NS1 antigen. METHODS: In this stud

Toscana virus: A comprehensive review of 1381 cases showing an emerging threat in the Mediterranean regions.

BACKGROUND: Toscana virus (TOSV) is a sand fly-borne phlebovirus causing central nervous system (CNS) infection in Mediterranean countries, during summer season. However, clinical aspects of the disease caused by this virus are poorly known by clinicians, so that its prevalence is probably underestimated due to a lack of diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: The data was gathered from all available case series and retrospective studies identifying TOSV as the causative viral agent. The informations of age, sex, clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, imaging results and clinical outcomes of TOSV inf

Detection of Toscana virus from an adult traveler returning to Australia with encephalitis.

Toscana virus (TOSV) is identified in sandflies, animals, and humans around the Mediterranean Sea. TOSV has not been reported in Australia. During investigations of cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with encephalitis, TOSV genetic sequences were identified in a traveler returning to Australia from Europe. TOSV should be considered, especially during May to October, in travelers to Australia who embarked in countries in and around the Mediterranean Sea and who subsequently present for medical care because of neurological symptoms.
