Effect of 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the auditory cortex on audiometry and otoacustic emissions.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at low frequencies (≤1 Hz) delivered to the primary motor cortex for 15 min or longer has been shown to reduce motor cortex excitability. Over the visual cortex, 1 Hz rTMS led to increased phosphene thresholds and over the auditory cortex rTMS reduced auditory evoked potentials. rTMS above the auditory or temporo-parietal cortex has also been reported to reduce the severity of auditory hallucinations and the perception of tinnitus. However, possible unwanted effects on hearing function have not yet been investigated systematically. 12 right-h

Modulation of visual evoked potentials by high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in migraineurs.

OBJECTIVE: High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) modulates cortical excitability. We investigated its effect on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in migraine. METHODS: Thirty-two headache-free controls (CO), 25 interictal (MINT) and 7 preictal migraineurs (MPRE) remained after exclusions. VEPs to 8' and 65' checks were averaged in six blocks of 100 single responses. VEPs were recorded before, directly after and 25min after 10Hz rTMS. The study was blinded for diagnosis during recording and for diagnosis and block number during analysis. First block amplitudes and ha

Investigating the Effects of Anodal Transcranial Pulsed Current Stimulation at Low Frequencies (0.5 to 5 Hz) on Corticospinal and Corticocortical Excitability.

The mechanism underlying transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS) as a non-invasive neuromodulation technique has garnered considerable attention in recent years. However, the effects of anodal tPCS (a-tPCS) at low frequencies remain unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the a-tPCS effects at 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 Hz on cortical outcomes and its adverse side effects. This double-blinded, randomized, counterbalanced crossover trial included 18 healthy young participants who completed five experimental sessions with 2 mA of a-tPCS for 20 min in a randomized order of frequencies (0.5, 1, 3

Transcorneal electrical stimulation: impact on healthcare and future potential.

Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES), a noninvasive therapeutic technique, has gained attention for its potential to treat retinal and optic nerve diseases. TES involves applying weak electrical currents via electrodes on the cornea to stimulate retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) without causing activation of photoreceptors, inducing phosphenes, and enabling the evaluation of inner retinal function. This is valuable for assessing residual retinal activity in patients with photoreceptor or RGC degeneration. Furthermore, TES has shown significant neuroprotective effects on RGCs and photoreceptor

Excitability changes induced in the human primary visual cortex by transcranial direct current stimulation: direct electrophysiological evidence.

PURPOSE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to modify the perception threshold of phosphenes elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The current study was undertaken to examine whether tDCS, when applied over the occipital cortex, is also able to affect visual-evoked potentials (VEPs), which characterize occipital activation in response to visual stimulation, in a polarity-specific way. METHOD: For this purpose, VEPs evoked by sinusoidal luminance grating in an on/off mode were recorded before, immediately after, and 10, 20, and 30 minutes after the end

Interaction between visual and motor cortex: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

The major link between the visual and motor systems is via the dorsal stream pathways from visual to parietal and frontal areas of the cortex. Although the pathway appears to be indirect, there is evidence that visual input can reach the motor cortex at relatively short latency. To shed some light on its neural basis, we studied the visuomotor interaction using paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the right first dorsal interosseous in sixteen healthy volunteers. A conditioning stimulus (CS) was applied over the phosphene hotspot of

Ivabradine in patients with inappropriate sinus tachycardia.

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) is characterized by paroxysmal tachycardia originating in the sinus nodal area. IST predominately affects young, female patients. Current antiarrhythmic drug treatment (ß-blockers, calcium antagonists), frequently complicated by side effects, is often not successful. Ivabradine, approved for angina pectoris, selectively reduces heart rate by blocking the "funny current" in the sinus node. We therefore evaluated the effect of ivabradine in patients with symptomatic IST. Ten female patients (median age 32.5 years, range 12-57) suffering from symptomatic IST

Visual phenomenology of the LSD flashback.

One hundred twenty-three persons with a history of LSD use were studied for the presence of the LSD flashback phenomenon and compared with 40 control subjects. A syndrome emerged that included ten distance visual disturbances. It had lasted for five years in half of the population, was treatable with benzodiazepines, exacerbated by phenothiazines, and precipitated by 19 different stimuli, most commonly emergence into a dark environment. Sensitivity to LSD as determined by flashbacks appears to divide the study sample into three discrete subgroups. There may be a genetic basis to LSD sensitivit

Low-frequency anodal Transcranial pulsed current stimulation (0.5-5 Hz): effects on EEG band amplitude, interhemispheric coherence, and cognitive performance.

Transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS) is a frequency-dependent neuromodulation technique. However, its mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the effects of low-frequency (0.5, 1, 3, 5 Hz, and sham stimulation) anodal monophasic tPCS (a-tPCSM) on interhemispheric coherence, electroencephalography (EEG) band power, cognitive behaviours, and adverse effects. Seventeen healthy adults completed five sessions in a double-blinded, randomised, counterbalanced crossover design (2 mA stimulation for 20 min over M1) with a 48-hour washout period. Before and immediately after stimulation

Vision Restoration to People with Long-Term Blindness Using the Brain-Computer Interface Technology: A Sociotechnical Research Framework to Improve Usefulness for Users.

Invasive and non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) represent a promising technology for treating various diseases and disabilities. BCI-based invasive solutions also include visual prostheses. Currently, there is rapid development of cortical prostheses and bold statements, eg, about the potential of Neuralink's experimental neuroprosthetic Blindsight to restore vision. However, questions arise about the usefulness of such solutions for people with long-term blindness, considering other compensatory aids and referring to the empirical basis of cases where vision has been successfully res

Mechanism of Resistance in Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] to bruchids, Callosobruchus spp. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae).

Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek var. radiata] is an important pulse crop in Asia, and is consumed as dry seeds and as bean sprouts. It is an excellent source of digestible protein. Bruchids [Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (F.)] are the important pests of mungbean and cause damage in the field and in storage. Bruchid infestation reduces the nutritional and market value of the grain and renders seeds unfit for human consumption, agricultural and commercial uses. These pests are controlled mainly by fumigation with highly toxic chemicals such as carbon disulfid

Theta Phase-dependent Modulation of Perception by Concurrent Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation and Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Sensory perception can be modulated by the phase of neural oscillations, especially in the theta and alpha ranges. Oscillatory activity in the visual cortex can be entrained by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) as well as periodic visual stimulation (i.e., flicker). Combined tACS and visual flicker stimulation modulates BOLD response, and concurrent 4-Hz auditory click train, and tACS modulate auditory perception in a phase-dependent way. In this study, we investigated whether phase synchrony between concurrent tACS and periodic visual stimulation (i.e., flicker) can modulate

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Ivabradine vs. Beta Blockers in Heart Transplant Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevated resting heart rate in heart transplant (HTx) recipients due to graft denervation is associated with adverse outcomes. Ivabradine and beta blockers are commonly used for heart rate control post-HTx, but their comparative effectiveness and safety remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ivabradine versus beta blockers in heart transplant recipients. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in April 2025 across PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar. Origi

Effect of methamphetamine on ultraweak photon emission and level of reactive oxygen species in male rat brain.

All living cells, including neurons, generate ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) during biological activity, and in particular, in the brain, it has been shown that UPE is correlated with neuronal activity and associated metabolic processes. Various intracellular factors, as well as external factors, can reduce or increase the intensity of UPE. In this study, we have used Methamphetamine (METH) as one potentially effective external factor, which is a substance that has the property of stimulating the central nervous system. METH can impair mitochondrial function by causing toxicity via various p
