Artifacts Deceive: The Electroretinogram in the Electroencephalogram of a teenager with cerebral anoxia.

Artifacts on an electroencephalogram (EEG) - whether physiologic or non-physiologic - can be common and are important to recognize to prevent errors in interpretation. One such EEG artifact is an electroretinogram (ERG) artifact which occurs during photic stimulation. Typically, of a low amplitude, its presence is usually obscured by normal EEG activity over the frontopolar channels but it can appear prominent in very suppressed or EEG recordings showing electrocerebral inactivity. Overall, rarely reported in the literature, the purpose of this case report is to highlight the presence of an ER

A case of late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, which is also known as Batten-Bielschowsky disease, is a group of neuro degenerative disorders, associated with various progressive symptoms including seizures, dementia, visual loss and cerebral atrophy. We experienced a case of late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in a 6-year-old boy who had progressive myoclonic seizures, ataxia, rapid psychomotor deterioration and visual loss. Photic stimulation at 2 to 5 Hz elicited a discrete spike and wave discharges in the occipital region on an electroencephalogram. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showe

Age-related reduction in visually evoked cerebral blood flow responses.

The influence of aging on photoreactive flow changes in the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) was investigated in 38 healthy volunteers aged 20-81 years. Mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) was measured at rest and during 10-Hz photic stimulation by transcranial Doppler sonography. The amplitude of the evoked flow response significantly decreased with age (r = -0.39; P < 0.001). In a group of elderly subjects (60-81 years), the evoked blood flow velocity increase was 10.8 +/- 2.7%, which is less than in young subjects aged 20-39 years (14.7 +/- 4.3%; P = 0.001). We conclude that normal aging affects

Electroencephalography in naval divers.

EEG studies were conducted on 98 naval divers to ascertain the incidence of abnormal paroxysmal activity in them and to correlate it with their performance in diving. Nine of the 98 showed EEG abnormality in the form of a buildup of high-voltage, low-frequency activity after hyperventilation. None of them showed sporadic bursts of sharp waves from any region on intermittent photic stimulation. A 5-year follow-up did not show any association between the EEG response and the diver's professional capabilities. Nine divers were also examined after a 30-min simulated exposure at 2.5 ATA breathing a

Simple photoreceptors in Limulus polyphemus.

The "olfactory nerve," the endoparietal eye, and the rudimentary lateral eyes of Limulus (polyphemus) contain simple photoreceptor cells that duplicate many of the electrical responses of the retinular cells of the lateral eye; the responses are a receptor potential consisting of aninitial transient phase and a subsequent steady phase,low-amplitude fluctuations, and a small locally regenerative response to pulses of both light and current. Photic stimulation does not induce conducted action potentials, but does increase the membrane conductance. The receptor potentialrequires the presence of s

Acoustic cues to place of articulation and the McGurk effect: the role of release bursts, aspiration, and formant transitions.

The McGurk effect demonstrates that the perceived place of articulation of an auditory consonant (such as/bi/) can be influenced by the simultaneous presentation of a videotape of a talker saying a conflicting consonant such as /gi/. Usually, such a presentation is perceived by observers as "di" or "delta i" (known as fusion responses). The reverse pairing (auditory /gi/ paired with a visual /bi/) results in "bgi." percepts. These are known as combination responses. In the current study, three experiments examined how acoustic information about place of articulation contained within the releas

Injured adult retinal axons with Pten and Socs3 co-deletion reform active synapses with suprachiasmatic neurons.

Despite advances in promoting axonal regeneration after adult central nervous system injury, elicitation of a large number of lesion-passing axons reform active synaptic connections with natural target neurons remains limited. By deleting both Pten and Socs3 in retinal ganglion cells, we report that optic nerve axons after prechiasm lesion robustly reinnervate the hypothalamus, form new synapses with neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), and re-integrate with the existing circuitry. Photic or electric stimulation of the retinal axons induces neuronal response in SCN. However both the i

Partial seizure with aphasic speech arrest caused by watching a popular animated TV program.

On the evening of December 16, 1997, about 700 children across Japan were hospitalized because of convulsive seizures or vomiting experienced while watching a popular animated TV program that included blue and red stimuli that alternated at 12 flashes per second. In one case, an 11-year-old girl developed a hallucination in the right visual field and a subsequent cramp on the right side of her face, with aphasic speech arrest. She had no history of seizures. Her electroencephalogram (EEG) showed normal background activity and no epileptiform discharges. Intermittent photic stimulation provoked

EEG during attacks of common and classical migraine.

The Copenhagen acute headache clinic offered an opportunity to record EEG during migraine attacks in eleven patients with common migraine and ten patients with classical migraine. The median duration of the attacks was 9 h in common migraine. Three patients were studied during prodromes of classical migraine and seven in the early headache phase. The EEG was recorded in the resting state, during hyperventilation and during photic stimulation. No abnormalities were encountered in patients with common migraine nor in eight patients with classical migraine. In two patients with classical migraine

Dynamic endocannabinoid-mediated neuromodulation of retinal circadian circuitry.

Circadian rhythms are biological rhythms that originate from the "master circadian clock," called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). SCN orchestrates the circadian rhythms using light as a chief zeitgeber, enabling humans to synchronize their daily physio-behavioral activities with the Earth's light-dark cycle. However, chronic/ irregular photic disturbances from the retina via the retinohypothalamic tract (RHT) can disrupt the amplitude and the expression of clock genes, such as the period circadian clock 2, causing circadian rhythm disruption (CRd) and associated neuropathologies. The presen

Photosensitive benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy.

PURPOSE: To describe the electroclinical features of subjects who presented with a photosensitive benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (PBMEI). METHODS: The patients were selected from a group of epileptic subjects with seizure onset in infancy or early childhood. Inclusion criteria were the presence of photic-induced myoclonic seizures and a favorable outcome. Cases with less than 24 month follow up were excluded from the analysis. RESULTS: Eight patients were identified (4 males, 4 females). Personal history was uneventful. All of them had familial antecedents of epilepsy. Psychomotor deve

Increasing the yield of EEG.

The EEG is the most common neurodiagnostic test performed to evaluate patients with suspected seizures. The majority of EEGs are requested in patients because of suspected seizures or for seizure management. It is unlikely that the patient's usual spell will be recorded during a routine EEG. Therefore, several activation techniques have been used in clinical EEG to help increase the occurrence of interictal epileptiform abnormalities, which are highly correlated with the diagnosis of a seizure disorder. EEG laboratories have long employed these techniques, which include hyperventilation, inter

Photoparoxysmal response on eye closure in photosensitive patients.

The Authors studied the presence of photoparoxysmal response (PPR) during intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) in 2,888 consecutive EEG recordings. PPR was present in 2.3% of EEGs and 10% of all patients referred to EEG laboratory for epilepsy (45 patients, 18 males, 27 females (M:F ratio 1:1.5), mean age 12 yrs). In 24 (53.3%) of these patients PPR was evident only (24.4%) or strikingly (28.9%) on eye closure during IPS. In 7 patients no other epileptic abnormalities were found on basal EEG and during hyperventilation, nor during IPS with eyes closed and with eyes open. The Authors consider

Brain chimeras for the study of an avian model of genetic epilepsy: structures involved in sound and light-induced seizures.

The epileptic homozygotes of the Fayoumi strain of chickens (Fepi) are affected by photogenic reflex epilepsy with complete penetrance. Here we demonstrate that they are equally affected by audiogenic reflex epilepsy induced by intense sound stimulation. All the Fepi display sound-induced seizures from hatching to adulthood consisting of initial 'ictal arousal' and running fits usually followed by generalized clonico-tonic convulsions. A running fit is the preconvulsive motor symptom specifically induced by auditory stimulation while neck myoclonus is the preconvulsive motor symptom specifical

Sequential visual stimuli increase high frequency power in the visual cortex.

Today, flickering full-field visual stimulation is used to increase neuronal oscillations for a variety of research or therapeutic purposes. We propose spatially organized sequential visual flickering stimulation as a newer tool to circumvent the intrinsic low-pass filter nature of the vertebrate visual system, in order to increase the power of high frequency oscillations in the visual system. We show that spatially organized visual flickering can increase power in high frequencies (100 to 190 Hz) in the visual cortex of mice. Consequently, spatially organized sequential sensory stimulation sh

Capabilities and limitations of the Apple Vision Pro as a portable psychophysics tool: Replicating crowding and polar angle asymmetries.

Many classic questions in vision science require presenting stimuli at precisely controlled locations in the visual field, a demand that has traditionally been met with specialized laboratory setups involving chinrests, high-resolution displays, and commercial eye trackers. Recent advances in portable mixed-reality hardware raise the possibility that some forms of visual psychophysics could be conducted on consumer devices outside these fixed laboratory environments. Here, we evaluate one such instrument, the Apple Vision Pro, by asking whether it can support psychophysical experiments on two

Stimulus conditions eliciting sneezing in response to bright light.

The photic sneeze reflex (PSR) is an involuntary sneezing response to bright light exposure, affecting approximately 25% of the population. Despite its long history in scientific literature, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Several theories, including optic-trigeminal summation, parasympathetic hypersensitivity, and parasympathetic generalization, have been proposed, but none have been conclusively validated. Reproducing the PSR reliably in a laboratory setting is crucial for understanding its neural underpinnings, yet the specific light parameters that trigger PSR are not well-define

The effect of experience and of dots' density and duration on the detection of coherent motion in dogs.

Knowledge about the mechanisms underlying canine vision is far from being exhaustive, especially that concerning post-retinal elaboration. One aspect that has received little attention is motion perception, and in spite of the common belief that dogs are extremely apt at detecting moving stimuli, there is no scientific support for such an assumption. In fact, we recently showed that dogs have higher thresholds than humans for coherent motion detection (Kanizsar et al. in Sci Rep UK 7:11259, 2017). This term refers to the ability of the visual system to perceive several units moving in the same

Entropy in scalp EEG can be used as a preimplantation marker for VNS efficacy.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a therapeutic option in drug-resistant epilepsy. VNS leads to ≥ 50% seizure reduction in 50 to 60% of patients, termed "responders". The remaining 40 to 50% of patients, "non-responders", exhibit seizure reduction < 50%. Our work aims to differentiate between these two patient groups in preimplantation EEG analysis by employing several Entropy methods. We identified 59 drug-resistant epilepsy patients treated with VNS. We established their response to VNS in terms of responders and non-responders. A preimplantation EEG with eyes open/closed, photic stimulation,
