Giant nonreciprocal chirality in photonic quasi-BIC systems.

Simultaneously achieving giant chirality, high-efficiency nonlinearity, and robust nonreciprocity remains elusive due to the inherent trade-off between the structural asymmetry required for chiroptics and the high quality (Q) factors essential for nonlinearity. Here, we overcome this fundamental limitation in silicon metasurfaces by exploiting symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs). By implementing a two-stage symmetry-breaking mechanism that combines an in-plane structural rotation with out-of-plane height perturbations, we engineer high-Q (104) resonances dominated by magnet

Decoupled-Subspace-Induced Flat Bands in a Photonic Superlattice.

Flat bands in photonic systems enable strong light confinement and enhanced light-matter interactions, yet realizing flat dispersion across an entire Brillouin zone (BZ) remains nontrivial. Here, we propose a practical mechanism for generating BZ-spanning flat bands through the coupling between M propagating modes and N localized resonances. When N>M, the finite-channel model necessarily supports exact flat bands that originate from an effectively decoupled subspace. As a representative example, we implement this mechanism in a plasmonic superlattice, where multiple localized resonances hybrid

Soft photonic skins with dynamic texture and colour control.

The visual appearances of surfaces are influenced by their colour and texture. Although the creation and tuning of structural colours has been realized with nanostructures1,2, achieving dynamic control over visual texture3,4 remains challenging. Inspired by dynamic modulation of cephalopod skin5,6, we develop polymer films with programmable surface textures. We bring these textures to life through immersion in different liquids that cause reversible local swelling/contraction to a degree that is determined by electron-beam irradiation. We show how standard electron-beam patterning tools can sp

Geometry as a Selector of Optical States in Curved Photonic Architectures.

Optical response is commonly regarded as an intrinsic property of a photonic structure. Here we show that, in curved photonic systems, geometry plays a dual role: the photonic architecture defines the optical-state landscape, whereas the illumination-observation geometry determines which optical states become experimentally accessible. Self-assembled, millimetre-scale, free-standing curved silica opals coupled to spherical water droplets on Teflon or planar mirrors reveal simultaneous access to multiple Bragg diffraction bands, together with distance-controlled spectral redistribution, spatial

Depth-adapted adaptive optics for three-photon microscopy.

Three-photon (3-P) fluorescence microscopy enables deep in vivo imaging with subcellular resolution, but its performance is fundamentally constrained by the maximum permissible laser power required to avoid tissue heating and photodamage. Under these power-limited conditions, fluorescence signal generation, image contrast, and achievable imaging depth are strongly affected by the illumination beam profile and aberration correction strategy. In this paper, we showed that using a fixed illumination beam size was suboptimal across different imaging depths. We further showed that conventional Zern

Photon trapping in a time cavity flying at the speed of light.

A strong optical pulse in a nonlinear medium can serve as a trap for photons. Photon confinement in such a trap moving at the speed of light is best described as time-trapping. Here we reveal unusual properties that fundamentally distinguish it from conventional trapping. Time-trapped states can exhibit zero leakage through the trap walls and possess extremely broad spectra while remaining genuine single modes with well-defined phase. Linear beatings between modes enable waveform reshaping in both the temporal and spectral domains. Time-trapped states support efficient coupling to external rad

Photon Management in Photochemical Synthesis and Reactor Scale-Up.

ConspectusPhotochemical methods have become indispensable in modern organic synthesis by enabling unique reactivities under mild conditions through electron transfer, energy transfer, and other radical-based pathways. In contrast to thermally driven reactions, however, photochemical processes are fundamentally governed by the delivery and utilization of photons. Wavelength, light intensity, photon flux, optical path length, and reactor geometry collectively determine how efficiently photons are absorbed and translated into chemical reactivity. Importantly, increasing light intensity does not n

Assessment of Linac photon dose delivery on Cherenkov production.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cherenkov imaging has emerged as a promising real-time optical dosimetry modality for treatment visualization and delivery verification. However, the dependence of Cherenkov emission on photon field size and beam-quality variations remains insufficiently characterized, particularly for highly modulated small-field delivery techniques. This work investigated whether field-size-dependent changes in dose delivery affected the production of Cherenkov photons. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cherenkov emission from a tissue-equivalent optical phantom was imaged using an intensified c

Suite3D: Volumetric cell detection for two-photon microscopy.

In two-photon imaging of neuronal activity it is common to acquire 3-dimensional volumes. However, these volumes are typically processed plane by plane, leading to duplicated cells across planes, reduced signal-to-noise ratio per cell, uncorrected axial movement, and missed cells. To overcome these limitations, we introduce Suite3D, a volumetric cell detection pipeline. Suite3D corrects for 3D brain motion, estimating axial motion and improving estimates of lateral motion. It detects neurons using 3D correlation, which improves the signal-to-background ratio and detectability of cells. Finally

Topological Defects and Geometrical Frustration in Fourier Photonic Simulator.

The XY models with continuous spin orientation play a pivotal role in understanding topological phase transitions and emergent frustration phenomena such as superconducting and superfluid phase transitions. However, the complex energy landscapes arising from frustrated lattice geometries and competing spin interactions make these models computationally intractable. To address this challenge, we designed a programmable photonic spin simulator capable of emulating the XY models with tunable lattice geometries and spin couplings, allowing systematic exploration of their statistical properties. We

Versatile spaceborne photonics with chalcogenide phase-change materials.

Recent growth in space systems has seen increasing capabilities packed into smaller and lighter Earth observation and deep space mission spacecraft. Phase-change materials (PCMs) are nonvolatile, reconfigurable, fast-switching, and have recently shown a high degree of space radiation tolerance, thereby making them an attractive materials platform for spaceborne photonics applications. They promise robust, lightweight, and energy-efficient reconfigurable optical systems whose functions can be dynamically defined on-demand and on-orbit to deliver enhanced science or mission support in harsh envi

Intravital two-photon microscopy of the native mouse thymus.

The thymus, a key organ in the adaptive immune system, is sensitive to a variety of insults including cytotoxic preconditioning, which leads to atrophy, compression of the blood vascular system, and alterations in hemodynamics. Although the thymus has innate regenerative capabilities, the production of T cells relies on the trafficking of lymphoid progenitors from the bone marrow through the altered thymic blood vascular system. Our understanding of thymic blood vascular hemodynamics is limited due to technical challenges associated with accessing the native thymus in live mice. To overcome th

Silicon-photonics-enabled chip-based 3D printer.

Imagine if it were possible to create 3D objects in the palm of your hand within seconds using only a single photonic chip. Although 3D printing has revolutionized the way we create in nearly every aspect of modern society, current 3D printers rely on large and complex mechanical systems to enable layer-by-layer addition of material. This limits print speed, resolution, portability, form factor, and material complexity. Although there have been recent efforts in developing novel photocuring-based 3D printers that utilize light to transform matter from liquid resins to solid objects using advan

Chances and challenges of photon-counting CT in musculoskeletal imaging.

In musculoskeletal imaging, CT is used in a wide range of indications, either alone or in a synergistic approach with MRI. While MRI is the preferred modality for the assessment of soft tissues and bone marrow, CT excels in the imaging of high-contrast structures, such as mineralized tissue. Additionally, the introduction of dual-energy CT in clinical practice two decades ago opened the door for spectral imaging applications. Recently, the advent of photon-counting detectors (PCDs) has further advanced the potential of CT, at least in theory. Compared to conventional energy-integrating detecto

Photonic helicoid-like surface states in chiral metamaterials.

We investigate the photonic topological phases in chiral metamaterials characterized by the magnetoelectric tensors with diagonal chirality components. The underlying medium is considered a photonic analogue of the topological semimetal featured with a Weyl cone and a cylindrical surface in the frequency-wave vector space. As the 'spin'-degenerate condition is satisfied, the photonic system can be rearranged as two hybrid modes that are completely decoupled. By introducing the pseudospin states as the basis for the hybrid modes, the photonic system is described by two subsystems in the form of

Near-Field Observation of the Photonic Spin Hall Effect.

The photonic spin Hall effect, referring to the spatial separation of photons with opposite spins due to spin-orbit interactions, has enabled potential for various spin-sensitive applications and devices. Here, using scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscopy, we observe spin-orbit interactions introduced by a subwavelength semiring antenna integrated in a plasmonic circuit. Clear evidence of unidirectional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is obtained by direct comparison of the amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field maps of the plasmonic nanocircuit under excitation with

Photon-Counting CT Material Decomposition in Bone Imaging.

The accurate screening of osteoporosis is important for identifying persons at risk. The diagnosis of bone conditions using dual X-ray absorptiometry is limited to extracting areal bone mineral density (BMD) and fails to provide any structural information. Computed tomography (CT) is excellent for morphological imaging but not ideal for material quantification. Advanced photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) possesses high spectral sensitivity and material decomposition capabilities to simultaneously determine qualitative and quantitative information. In this study, we explored the diagnostic ut

Ultrasound-Triggered In Situ Photon Emission for Noninvasive Optogenetics.

Optogenetics has revolutionized neuroscience understanding by allowing spatiotemporal control over cell-type specific neurons in neural circuits. However, the sluggish development of noninvasive photon delivery in the brain has limited the clinical application of optogenetics. Focused ultrasound (FUS)-derived mechanoluminescence has emerged as a promising tool for in situ photon emission, but there is not yet a biocompatible liquid-phase mechanoluminescence system for spatiotemporal optogenetics. To achieve noninvasive optogenetics with a high temporal resolution and desirable biocompatibility

Evaluation of the ear ossicles with photon-counting detector CT.

Recently, computed tomography with photon-counting detector (PCD-CT) has been developed to enable high-resolution imaging at a lower radiation dose. PCD-CT employs a photon-counting detector that can measure the number of incident X-ray photons and their energy. The newly released PCD-CT (NAEOTOM Alpha, Siemens Healthineers, Forchheim, Germany) has been in clinical use at our institution since December 2022. The PCD-CT offers several advantages over current state-of-the-art energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT). The PCD-CT does not require septa to create a detector channel, while EID-CT doe
