Does spousal physical abuse affect the outcome of pregnancy?

The relationship between living in a physical abusive relationship and adverse outcome of pregnancy was examined using a structured interview including an obstetrical history. Sixty-six women living in a physically abusive relationship, and 114 women randomly selected and not presently living in such a relationship were interviewed. The women reported 312 completed pregnancies. Five of these were twin pregnancies and one was a stillbirth without information on birth weight. Of the 306 pregnancies included in the analysis, violence had occurred in 40. The mean birth weight of births reported by

Predictors of parental physical abuse: the contribution of internalizing and externalizing disorders and childhood experiences of abuse.

BACKGROUND: The deleterious effects of childhood abuse have been a focus of much research; however, the causes of parental physical abuse are less well documented. Research with clinical samples suggests that individuals who display abusive behaviors are more likely to have a history of childhood abuse and higher rates of internalizing and externalizing disorders. Whether childhood abuse and psychopathology contribute independently to parental abusive behaviors or if the association between childhood abuse and the parental physical abuse is mediated by the individual's psychopathology has not

Impact of sexual and physical abuse dimensions on health status: development of an abuse severity measure.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the abundant literature showing a relationship of sexual and/or physical abuse history with poor health status, few studies provide evidence about which dimensions of abuse may have a worse impact on health. In female patients with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, the present study aims to identify which dimensions of abuse history (eg, number of perpetrators, injury) might predict poor current health status, in order to develop an empirically based severity of abuse measure. METHODS: Of a sample of 239 female patients from a referral gastroenterology clinic, this paper pri

The ecology of adolescent maltreatment: a multilevel examination of adolescent physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect.

This study examined the individual characteristics, family relations, and stress/social support of 50 maltreated adolescents and their mothers. Dyads were divided into 4 demographically similar groups: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and nonmaltreatment control. Results show that adolescent neglect was primarily associated with extrafamilial difficulties and social isolation. Adolescent physical abuse was linked more with rigidity in family relations, poorer maternal understanding of child developmental skills, and adolescent externalizing behaviors. In contrast, adolescent sexual abuse

Expectations test: trauma scales for sexual abuse, physical abuse, exposure to family violence, and posttraumatic stress.

Gully's 2000 Expectations Test was developed as a tool to use with children ages 4 through 17 to measure social information processing. Prior research suggested it could help identify abused and emotionally traumatized children. Results from regression analyses were used to develop four scales that could be calculated simply. Prior research demonstrated excellent interrater reliability for the variables from the Expectations Test used in the regression analyses. The minimum Cronbach's alpha for any scale is .75. The minimum test-retest reliability is .88. Classification results indicated each

Behavioral/emotional indicators of sexual abuse in child psychiatric inpatients: a controlled comparison with physical abuse.

Several behavioral and emotional indicators of child sexual abuse were compared for both sexually (n = 29) and physically abused (n = 52) children from a sample of 103 hospitalized psychiatric patients. The measures included (1) scores from a factor-analyzed sexual abuse symptom checklist covering home/community behavior that was rated by parents during a clinical interview and (2) frequency counts of psychological symptoms exhibited by the children during a 3-week period of hospitalization. Results of a 2 (sexual abuse status) X 2 (physical abuse status) X 2 (gender) Multivariate Analysis of

Do special investigations as indicated. 6. Treat and refer child appropriately. 7. Provide medico-legal evidence if required (note taking and J88 forms). 8. Notify the Department of Social Services about abuse. 9. Ensure the safety of the c

Prevalence of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and concurrent traumatic life events in a general medical population.

A normative sample of 100 patients (59 women and 41 men) from the city of Rochester, Minnesota, and the surrounding rural area who came to the Mayo Clinic for a general medical examination were interviewed in a semistructured format by using a list of questions about childhood life events. Sexual abuse was reported by 16.9% of women and 0% of men, frequencies that are near the lower end of the spectrum of reported values from recent studies. Physical abuse was reported by 5% of the entire group. No association was observed between the two types of abuse. Physical abuse was associated with a si

Suicidality in college women who were sexually and physically abused and physically punished by parents.

In order to ascertain if physically abused, sexually abused, physically punished, and nonabused/nonpunished women students reported different levels of suicidality, 182 women completed measures of suicidality, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and physical punishment. Women who reported sexual abuse were more suicidal than all other groups, and those physically abused were more suicidal than those nonabused/nonpunished. In a multiple regression, sexual abuse accounted for the most variance in suicidality (15%). Apparently women who report sexual or physical abuse, but not ordinary physical punishm

Bruising in Infants: An Approach to the Recognition of Child Physical Abuse.

Infants (children <12 months of age) are maltreated at more than twice the rate of any other child age group, and infants die because of maltreatment at 3 times the rate of any other age group in childhood. The incidence of hospitalization for serious physical abuse in children also is highest for infants. Successful recognition of medically mild signs of physical abuse in infants, such as certain bruising patterns, can, therefore, lead to lifesaving interventions. The importance of the recognition of medically mild injuries due to physical abuse is underscored by the finding that a high perce

Sexual and physical abuse and depressive symptoms in the UK Biobank.

We investigated the associations of sexual and physical abuse with depressive symptoms in men and women in a large population cohort. METHODS: Observational study based on 151,396 UK Biobank participants. Exposures included self-reported experiences of childhood physical abuse and sexual abuse. Mid-life outcomes included current depressive symptoms score, individual depressive sym

They were encouraged to describe, in detail, aspects of the appointment which triggered memories of the sexual abuse. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Qualitative Content Analysis. The identified overall theme illustrating the latent content was 'An echo of sexual abuse transf

Pressure Urticaria in an Infant Appearing Similar to Physical Abuse.

A healthy Hispanic boy was born via cesarean delivery after an uncomplicated pregnancy. At 4 weeks old , his parents brought him to the emergency department for bruising on both soles of the feet. At 6 weeks old, his parents brought him to primary care for new bruises on his arms and back. After evaluation, primary care referred the patient to the emergency department. The parents denied any recent trauma, fever, cough, decreased urine, or change in appetite. Because of 2 episodes of unexplained bruising, the Department of Children and Families was granted emergency custody of the child. Hemat
