Impact of Bone Fracture on Muscle Strength and Physical Performance-Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Low muscle strength and poor physical performance are associated with high risk of fracture. Many studies assessed clinical and functional outcomes of fractures. Fewer studies analyzed the impact of fractures on muscle strength and physical performance. RECENT FINDINGS: Vertebral fractures (especially multiple and severe ones) are associated with back pain, back-related disability, lower grip strength, lower strength of lower limbs, lower gait speed, and poor balance. Patients with hip fracture have slower gait and lower quadriceps strength. Non-vertebral fractures were ass

Fatigue in primary Sjögren's syndrome is associated with an objective decline in physical performance, pain and depression.

BACKGROUND: Exercise capacity (EC) and physical activity (PA) are relevant predictors of mortality in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) but the CHD-specific long-term trajectories of these outcomes after a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program are not well known. The main objective of this study was to determine the mean change in EC (6-min walking test (6MWT) distance) in CHD patients at 12 months after a CR program compared to the end of the program. We also performed a series of exploratory analyses: (i) estimating the decile shifts and the typical (median) individual change for EC,

The Association Between Polypharmacy and Physical Function in Older Adults: a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Reduced physical function and polypharmacy (PPha) are two highly prevalent negative effects of aging, which are expected to increase more, since demographic aging is expected to grow rapidly within the next decades. Previous research suggests that polypharmacy (PPha) is a predictor of poor physical function and vice versa in older adults and therefore we conducted a systematic review of the literature to summarize and critically analyze the relationship between physical function and PPha and vice versa in older adults, in order to provide recent scientific evidence. METHODS: We se

Effects of Stroop task duration on subsequent cognitive and physical performance.

The strength model of self-control purports to explain why brief cognitive response inhibition tasks impair subsequent isometric handgrip endurance. According to the model, ego depleting tasks requiring self-control resources impair performance on subsequent tasks that also require self-control resources. However, several lines of evidence challenge this model, including evidence of improved exercise performance following longer cognitive tasks. Our study investigated the effects of cognitive task duration on (1) subsequent physical endurance performance, (2) concurrent cognitive task performa

Towards a Functional Performance Validation Standard for Industrial Low-Back Exoskeletons: State of the Art Review.

While the research interest for exoskeletons has been rising in the last decades, missing standards for their rigorous evaluation are potentially limiting their adoption in the industrial field. In this context, exoskeletons for worker support have the aim to reduce the physical effort required by humans, with dramatic social and economic impact. Indeed, exoskeletons can reduce the occurrence and the entity of work-related musculoskeletal disorders that often cause absence from work, resulting in an eventual productivity loss. This very urgent and multifaceted issue is starting to be acknowled

Study of the N1-(2,3,4-Trimethoxybenzyl)-N2-{2-[(2,3,4-Trimethoxybenzyl)Amine]Ethyl}-1,2-Ethandiamine Compound Effect on the Physical Performance of Animals.

We studied the effect of N1-(2,3,4-trimethoxybenzyl)-N2-{2-[(2,3,4-trimethoxybenzyl)amino]ethyl}-1,2-ethanediamine (compound ALM-802) on the physical performance of mice after acute fatigue. The animals' performance was assessed on a treadmill. The criterion for assessing exercise tolerance was the length of the distance passed when running on a treadmill until complete fatigue. To assess the actoprotective activity of compound ALM-802, we used a method of stepwise increase in load with an initial running speed of 42 cm/sec and its subsequent increase by 5 cm/sec every 5 min. The maximum speed

Examining the Independent and Interactive Carryover Effects of Cognitive and Physical Exertions on Physical Performance.

ObjectiveThis study compared the effects of prior cognitive, physical, and concurrent exertion on physical performance.BackgroundFatiguing cognitive and physical exertions have been shown to negatively affect subsequent task performance. However, it is not clearly understood if concurrent physical and cognitive effort may exaggerate the negative carryover effects on physical task performance when compared to cognitive or physical exertion alone.MethodTwenty-five participants completed four isometric handgrip endurance trials on different days. The endurance trials were preceded by four, 15-min
