Comparing physiological impacts of positive pressure ventilation versus self-breathing via a versatile cardiopulmonary model incorporating a novel alveoli opening mechanism.

Mathematical models can be used to generate high-fidelity simulations of the cardiopulmonary system. Such models, when applied to real patients, can provide valuable insights into underlying physiological processes that are hard for clinicians to observe directly. In this work, we propose a novel modelling strategy capable of generating scenario-specific cardiopulmonary simulations to replicate the vital physiological signals clinicians use to determine the state of a patient. This model is composed of a tree-like pulmonary system that features a novel, non-linear alveoli opening strategy, bas

Aortic arch obstruction neonates with biventricular physiology: left-open compared to closed inter-atrial communication during primary repair--a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Leaving an inter-atrial communication (IAC) open for left atrial decompression is often recommended in neonates with aortic arch obstruction undergoing primary repair. In this study, outcomes in these patients were compared to those with intact atrial septum after repair. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2013, 53 consecutive neonates with severe aortic arch obstruction (hypoplasia: n = 45, interruption: n = 8) underwent primary repair from an anterior approach. Median age and weight were 8 days (range: 2-30) and 3.2 kg (range: 2.4-4.4), respectively. Cardiac morphology included a ventric

[Internal callus distraction in epiphyseal groove defect--a physiologic means of spontaneous correction. Results of a comparative histomorphologic study in a small and large animal experiment].

For this experimental study we removed with a trephine in small (rabbit) and larger (pigs) animals cylinders of 2 mm respectively 8 mm diameter from the central growth plate area of proximal tibia. The direction of burring is in the axial line of the femur proximo-distally; the insertion point of the trephine is chosen on the cheek of the medial femoral condyle. As common reaction to that kind of trauma the defects in growth plates of rabbits become filled with a bone bridge that joins the epiphyseal core to the metaphyseal trabeculae, leading to gross growth disturbances. In pigs a similar so

Physiologically based serum ferritin thresholds for iron deficiency among women and children from Africa, Asia, Europe, and central America: a multinational comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of iron deficiency commonly relies on measurement of serum ferritin concentrations. WHO guidelines identify serum ferritin thresholds for iron deficiency among healthy individuals of less than 15 μg/L for women and less than 12 μg/L for children under 5 years, based on expert opinion. We report thresholds for iron deficiency for apparently healthy non-pregnant women and young children based on physiological indicators. METHODS: We performed secondary analyses of cross-sectional data from women (aged 15-49 years) and children (aged 6-59 months) from 12 countries in Africa

Comparative effects of conventional cow's milk versus milk free of A1-type beta-casein on gastrointestinal physiology and symptoms of digestive discomfort in participants intolerant to conventional cow's milk: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cow’s milk is an important source of nutrients supporting human growth and development as well as adult health, but it can be associated with unwanted gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. These symptoms are often attributed to lactose, but may instead be partly due to peptides released during digestion. This exploratory study aimed to compare the effects of consuming milk free of A1-type beta-casein (A1PF milk) with those of conventional cow’s milk (containing both A1- and A2-types of beta-casein) on GI symptoms in individuals who usually suffer from mild-to-moderate digestive discomfor

Physiological and clinical effects of low-intensity blood-flow restricted resistance exercise compared to standard rehabilitation in adults with knee osteoarthritis-Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease with high socioeconomical costs. In Denmark, standard rehabilitation (SR) consists of a combination of patient education and supervised physical exercise involving a standardized neuromuscular training program. As an evidence-based alternative, high-load (>70% 1RM) resistance training (HIRT) has shown positive rehabilitation effects in knee-OA but may not be tolerated in all patients (~25%) due to knee joint pain. However, low-load resistance training (20-40% 1RM) with concurrent partial blood-flow restriction (BFR) appears to produce effec

Less Is More: A Physiological Dose of Vitamin B12 Enhances Neural Recovery Compared to a High Dose in an H₂O₂-Stressed SH-SY5Y Neural-Like Cell Model.

Vitamin B12 (VitB12) plays a crucial role in neural homeostasis, and a high dose is preferred as treatment to support recovery from neural impairments. However, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding its dose-dependent effects, particularly in its influence on cellular recovery following neural damage. To address this, we utilized retinoic acid-differentiated SH-SY5Y cells, as an in vitro neural model, where we induced neural damage using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), followed by recovery in either a physiological or high dose of VitB12. Our findings reveal that a physiological dose of VitB
