The operative results of 115 patients with pilonidal sinus are described. The patients were controlled in 1977, 2 to 11 years after surgery. Only small, non-infected pilonidal sinuses should be radically excised followed by primary suture and Redon-drainage. For extended sinuses and for recurrences the best results are obtained when the wound is left open or marsupialisation is applied. Pilonidal sinus-abscesses should be incised. This simple procedure resulted in primary healing in 23% of our patients.

Pilonidal sinus (PNS) is a chronic inflammatory condition that primarily originates from hair follicles in the natal cleft at the base of the spine and may also occur in other areas such as the axilla and umbilicus. A 25-year-old male patient presented to the outpatient department (OPD) of the surgery unit at the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Borella, in November 2022 with complaints of pain and purulent discharge from the sacral region near the anus, accompanied by intermittent fever for 5 days. Clinical examination revealed a tender swelling in the sacral area with a discharging sinus

BACKGROUND Pilonidal sinus is a chronic or acute infectious disease in the intergluteal cleft. Various surgical treatments exist, but optimal management remains debated. This study compares outcomes of primary midline closure (PMC), Karydakis flap (KF), Limberg flap (LF), and laser pilonidotomy (LP) in adult patients with pilonidal sinus disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS The data of 476 patients who underwent surgery for pilonidal sinus disease in our clinic between January 2011 and September 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. After 54 patients were excluded, the remaining patients were divided

Pilonidal sinus is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation, swelling, and pain in the sacrococcygeal region. In recent years, the rate of recurrence and wound complications in PSD remains high, and no treatment is universally accepted. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of phenol treatment with surgical excision treatment for PSD through a meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials. We searched three electronic databases, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library, to comprehensively search the literature comparing phenol treatment and surgical treatment of pilonidal sinus. Fourteen

OBJECTIVES: Pilonidal sinus disease causes chronic inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue, and it commonly localises in the sacrococcygeal region. This study evaluated the effects of hypertrichosis, family history, obesity and sex steroids in 298 patients with pilonidal sinus disease.
METHODS: The medical records of 618 patients treated at the General Surgery Clinic of Malatya State Hospital for primary pilonidal sinus disease between January 2014 and December 2017 were evaluated retrospectively.
RESULTS: Female sex and family histories of pilonidal sinus disease and hypertri

BACKGROUND: Recently, minimally invasive techniques to avoid radical excisions of the pilonidal sinus with long-lasting secondary wound healing were developed. We describe a rare case of an intrapelvic, pararectal recurrence of a pilonidal sinus, who was innovatively treated with flexible endoscopy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Caucasian man presented with an intrapelvic, pararectal recurrence of a primarily wide-stretched pilonidal sinus, originally located in the sacrococcygeal region and spreading laterally to the gluteal region and intrapelvic to the presacral area. No connection to t

BACKGROUNDS: Pilonidal sinus is a common chronic disease of the sacrococcygeal region. Although many surgical methods have been described for treating pilonidal sinus disease, controversy still exists as to the best surgical technique. The aim of this study is to present a new modified advancement flap technique named "omega flap" for the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 18 patients with pilonidal sinus who were treated between March 2012 and August 2014. All cases underwent oval excision and omega advancement flap reconstruction. Defect size, p

BACKGROUND: The surgical approach to pilonidal sinus disease is open to debate with no ideal treatment. The aim of this work is to present the efficacy of the modified gluteal sliding plication closure technique in treatment of pilonidal sinus disease as regards the complication and recurrence rates, while maintaining a more cosmetically acceptable midline scar.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients between the year 2000 and 2008 with symptomatic pilonidal disease were treated by the modified gluteal sliding plication closure method, except for recurrent cases after previous flap surgery. Outcom

Pilonidal sinus is a chronic intermittent inflammatory condition that is predominantly located in the sacrococcygeal region. For the closure of uncomplicated small pilonidal sinuses, conventional therapeutic techniques including total excision of the sinus and leaving the defect open for secondary healing have been reported with varying success rates. However, the treatment of recurrent and extensive disease remains as a difficult condition. The ideal treatment should be associated with short hospital stay, minimal complication rates, and no disease recurrence. Secondary wound healing after la

Pilonidal sinus disease is associated with a high rate of recurrence and complications. The Karydakis (KAR) method, whereby an asymmetric subcutaneous flap obliterates the anal crease, has been shown to be effective in adults. The goal of this study is to assess the efficacy of the KAR procedure in the operative treatment of children with pilonidal sinus disease compared to those treated via a midline excision (ME). Sixty-eight cases of pediatric pilonidal sinus excision were reviewed over the past 10 years. Data abstracted included surgical approach, complication rate and recurrence rate. Stu

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body mass index (BMI) was assessed as an objective indicator of obesity to determine whether it has an effect on the results of the Karydakis technique for managing chronic pilonidal sinus.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The prospective study included 41 consecutive patients with chronic pilonidal sinus categorized according to their BMI as obese (BMI >/=26.5, n=32) or nonobese (BMI <26.5, n=9). Patient data included demographics, symptoms, duration of disease, previous management, postoperative course, morbidity, and recurrence. All patients were treated by the Karydakis flap and

Hereditary angio-oedema is an autosomal dominant condition resulting in a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor protein in serum. The condition is characterized by oedematous attacks in the skin, mucous membranes and gastrointestinal tract triggered by mental and physical stress. We present the rare case of a young girl with known hereditary angio-oedema and spina bifida occulta being admitted for an elective pilonidal sinus excision. This case presented different challenges for the anaesthetists and surgeons.

This article reports on the results of conservative treatment of 48 patients with complicated pilonidal sinus disease. The treatment consisted of an injection of phenol 80% into the sinus tract after the patients had undergone depilation and excavation while under local anesthesia. The number of phenol injections in each patient varied from one to nine (mean: two injections). Patients were considered cured if no signs of recurrent pilonidal sinus disease occurred within 1 year after treatment. The mean follow-up period after cure was 3 years (range: 1 to 6 years). The recurrence rate was 6.3%
