Effects of extreme environmental conditions on the skin barrier: a pilot study from the "Under The Pole" project with spectral and biometric measurements.

INTRODUCTION: Under The Pole is an ambitious underwater exploration program in extreme environments, particularly in deep and polar regions. Diving in the cold and saline waters of the Arctic exposes the skin to intense thermal and osmotic stress, potentially altering its barrier function. This study aimed to evaluate both the acute and long-term effects of repeated cold-water diving on skin hydration and barrier integrity during a two-month Arctic expedition. METHODS: Seven healthy Caucasian male participants without facial skin lesions were monitored throughout the expedition. Skin appearan

Protocol for a pilot effectiveness and feasibility randomized controlled trial of an advanced telerehabilitation system for people with multiple sclerosis (PLATINUMS project).

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) causes many different symptoms, with some of the most dominant being impaired balance and walking performance. Exercise effectively improves strength, balance, and walking performance, but barriers to performing exercise, such as fatigue and logistical issues, do exist. A potential strategy to overcome these barriers is the use of telerehabilitation, which has shown promising results. Few previous studies have measured strength, balance, and walking outcomes, and none have used systems that provided real-time feedback. Therefore, the present study aims to co

Pilot randomized controlled trial to reduce HIV-related stigma among clinicians in Malaysia via project ECHO®.

HIV-related stigma from clinicians contributes to global disparities in HIV testing and prevention. Scalable interventions, particularly those reaching clinicians beyond individual healthcare facilities, are needed to reach clinicians worldwide. These interventions are especially important in places like Malaysia where substantial HIV-related structural stigma exists. We tested an intervention that incorporated evidence-based stigma reduction tools into a popular teletraining program for clinicians, Project ECHO for HIV Prevention and Stigma Reduction (PEHP-SR). We compared PEHP-SR to the same

Case Finding Among and Comprehensive Management of Household Contacts of Persons with Pulmonary Tuberculosis: a Pilot Project - Uganda, 2023-2024.

To help achieve the End TB Strategy target of a 90% reduction in tuberculosis (TB) incidence by 2030, member states of the United Nations High-Level Meetings on TB called for improving provision of TB preventive treatment (TPT) for household contacts of persons with TB, who are at increased risk for infection and disease. However, TPT use among household contacts worldwide remained at 21% in 2023. The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, the Uganda Ministry of Health, and CDC piloted a comprehensive approach for increasing case finding and TPT coverage among household con

Voluntary counselling and testing sites as a source of sentinel information on HIV prevalence in a concentrated epidemic: a pilot project from Indonesia.

A new system for monitoring HIV voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) outcomes was established in 2007 at seven VCT clinics in Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia. Counsellors collected demographic and risk information from VCT clients. Logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with HIV infection. In 15 months, HIV prevalence in 5569 new clients without HIV symptoms was 63.3% in injecting drug users (IDUs) (n = 783), 7.7% in female sex workers (n = 1437), 31.6% among transgender people (n = 395), 9.3% in men who have sex with men (n = 268), 13.5% in clients of sex workers (n = 643

Integrating robotic surgery training and the educational value of body donation: insights from an Italian pilot project on perceived training value.

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted surgery requires training that integrates technical skills, visuospatial coordination, platform management, and anatomical understanding. Although synthetic and virtual-reality simulators are widely used, high-fidelity training on bodies donated to science remains comparatively underreported. This pilot study therefore aimed to evaluate participants' perceived value of a robotic surgery training experience with the da Vinci Xi platform in a body donation setting, and to examine whether this perceived value was associated with participants' views on the educational

Pilot-scale production of high-purity struvite fertilizer from livestock waste: Outcomes of the RE-LIVE WASTE project in Cyprus.

Decarbonizing fertilizer production necessitates the development of innovative practices for producing waste-derived fertilizers, that will mitigate environmental degradation from waste disposal. Struvite crystallization (SC) is a well-known practice for nutrient recovery from waste by producing struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) fertilizers. However, research on SC upgrading from livestock waste is limited. In this study, experiments were conducted in the Cyprus 250-L SC pilot reactor. Ultrafiltration permeates from mixed livestock, dairy, and bio-wastes, Matrix 1, and pig slurry, Matrix 2, were used s

Broadening community engagement in clinical research: Designing and assessing a pilot crowdsourcing project to obtain community feedback on an HIV clinical trial.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Community engagement is widely acknowledged as an important step in clinical trials. One underexplored method for engagement in clinical trials is crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing involves having community members attempt to solve a problem and then publicly sharing innovative solutions. We designed and conducted a pilot using a crowdsourcing approach to obtain community feedback on an HIV clinical trial, called the Acceptability of Combined Community Engagement Strategies Study. In this work, we describe and assess the Acceptability of Combined Community Engagement Strategies Stu
