The impact of active components from Piper sarmentosum on the growth, intestinal barrier function, and immunity of broiler chickens.

OBJECTIVE: Pellitorine (PT) and vitexin-2-O-rhamnoside (VR) are two bioactive compounds found in Piper sarmentosum (PS). Their contents are relatively high in the ethanol extract of PS (PSE). However, it remains unknown whether PT and VR are the primary components of PS that exert beneficial effects on gut health. In this study, we aimed to confirm that these two compounds are the primary anti-inflammatory active ingredients in PSE. METHODS: Total of 300 female one-day-old Danzhou chickens were randomly divided into five groups with five replicates each. Chickens were given a basal diet (CON

In vivo anthelmintic activity of hydroethanolic extract of Piper cubeba fruits in sheep naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes.

Parasitic infections caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are the main cause of production losses in small ruminants, especially sheep. Haemonchus contortus is the most common nematode in tropical regions. The indiscriminate use of synthetic anthelmintics to control helminthosis has led to the development of resistant parasites. As a result, there has been growing interest in using plant extracts and natural products to control gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the in vivo anthelmintic activity of the hydroethanolic extract of Piper cubeba frui

Effects of oxazepam and an extract of kava roots (Piper methysticum) on event-related potentials in a word recognition task.

Twelve healthy volunteers were tested in a double-blind crossover study to assess the effects of oxazepam and an extract of kava roots (Piper methysticum) on behavior and event-related potentials (ERPs) in a recognition memory task. The subjects' task was to identify within a list of visually presented words those that were shown for the first time and those that were being repeated. The repeated words were associated with an increased positivity beginning approximately 250 ms poststimulus. Oxazepam led to a reduction of a negative component in the 250-500 ms range for both old and new words a

Computational analysis of therapeutic potential for simplified Piper. spp- derived medicinal mixtures in anxiety, sleep, pain and seizure.

Phytomedicines have played a vital role in traditional medical systems globally, particularly in providing culturally relevant and accessible healthcare solutions. Piper methysticum, known as Kava, is a traditional Pacific Island phytomedicine with clinically validated anxiolytic properties, primarily attributed to its Kavalactones. However, the biogeographically restricted distribution of Piper methysticum and the ecological and cultural concerns surrounding its widespread adoption highlight the need to explore alternative sources within the Piper genus. This study investigates whether other

In vivo efficacy of uvangoletin from Piper aduncum (Piperaceae) against Schistosoma mansoni and in silico studies targeting SmNTPDases.

Schistosomiasis stands as one of the most significant parasitic diseases on a global scale, with approximately 250 million infections worldwide. It is imperative to address this pressing issue by developing new antischistosomal drugs. Chalcones have emerged as a promising class of natural compounds, demonstrating noteworthy effects observed in vitro experiments with Schistosoma mansoni, and demonstrating the ability to inhibit SmNTPDases and apyrase from potatoes. In this study, we focused on uvangoletin, a naturally occurring dihydrochalcone from Piper aduncum. We isolated uvangoletin from P.
