Assessing the uptake of trace gases by forests contributes to understanding the mechanisms of gas exchange between vegetation and the atmosphere and to evaluating the potential risk of these pollutant gases to forests. In this study, the multi-timescale characteristics of the stomatal uptake of NO, NO2, SO2 and O3 by Schima superba, Eucalyptus citriodora and Acacia auriculiformis were investigated by continuous sap flow measurements for a 3-year period. The peak canopy stomatal conductance (GC) for these three species appeared between 9:00 and 12:00, which was jointly regulated by the vapour p

The applications of nanoparticles continue to expand into areas as diverse as medicine, bioremediation, cosmetics, pharmacology and various industries, including agri-food production. The widespread use of nanoparticles has generated concerns given the impact these nanoparticles - mostly metal-based such as CuO, Ag, Au, CeO2, TiO2, ZnO, Co, and Pt - could be having on plants. Some of the most studied variables are plant growth, development, production of biomass, and ultimately oxidative stress and photosynthesis. A systematic appraisal of information about the impact of nanoparticles on these

In soil, chromium can be found in two main valence states: hexavalent Cr(VI) and trivalent Cr(III). In this study, we investigated the impact of Cr on photosynthetic gas exchange, photosystem II (PSII) activity, Cr translocation and accumulation, proline content and alkaloids production, i.e. scopolamine and hyoscyamine, in Datura innoxia. Cr uptake was influenced by its oxidation state and its concentration in growth medium. The plant roots were determined as being the main organ of Cr accumulation. Cr(VI) was more toxic than Cr(III) as indicated by reduction in plant biomass and net photosyn

Maize leaf blight (MLB), caused by the fungus Bipolaris maydis, is an important disease affecting maize production. In order to minimize the use of fungicides in agriculture, nutrient-based resistance inducers may become a promising alternative to manage MLB. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential of Semia® (zinc (20%) complexed with a plant-derived pool of polyphenols (10%)) to hamper the infection of maize leaves by B. maydis by analyzing their photosynthetic performance and carbohydrate and antioxidative metabolism, as well as the expression of defense-related genes. The activation of the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway reduces water loss from plants challenged by drought stress. The effect of drought-induced ABA signaling on the defense and nutrition allocation of plants is largely unknown. We postulated that these changes can affect herbivorous insects. We studied the effects of drought on different feeding stages of pea aphids in the wild-type A17 of Medicago truncatula and ABA signaling pathway mutant sta-1. We examined the impact of drought on plant water status, induced plant defense signaling via the abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), an

Climate change has become the global concern due to its drastic effects on the environment. Agriculture sector is the backbone of food security which remains at the disposal of climate change. Heat stress is the is the most concerning effect of climate change which negatively affect the plant growth and potential yields. The present experiment was conducted to assess the effects of exogenously applied β-sitosterol (Bs at 100 mg/L) and eucalyptus biochar (Eb at 5%) on the antioxidants and nutritional status in Thymus vulgaris under heat stressed conditions. The pot experiment was conducted in c

BACKGROUND: The diamide chlorantraniliprole stands out for its high performance in controlling agricultural pests, with high selectivity and reduced environmental impact. In coffee cultivation, this insecticide has been widely employed for the management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville, 1842). However, intensive use has favored the selection of resistant populations, compromising control efficacy and intensifying biotic stress in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological effects of chlorantraniliprole on coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L., cv

Rainfed maize production in the hilly ecosystem of Northeastern Himalayas often suffers from moisture and soil acidity induced abiotic stresses. The present study measured evapotranspiration loss (ETc) of maize crop under controlled condition (pot experiment) of water deficit (W25-25 % and W50-50 % of field capacity soil moistures) and well watered (W100 = 100 % of field capacity (FC)) regimes in strong acid soils (pH = 4.3) of the Northeastern Himalayan Region of India. The response of soil ameliorants (lime) and phosphorus (P) nutrition under differential water regimes on ETc losses and wate

Thermogenic flowers produce heat by intense respiration, and the rates of O2 consumption (Ṁo2) in some species can exceed those of all other tissues of plants and most animals. By exposing intact flowers to a range of O2 pressures (Po2) and measuring Ṁo2, we demonstrate that the highest respiration rates exceed the capacity of the O2 diffusive pathway and become diffusion limited in atmospheric air. The male florets on the inflorescence of Arum concinnatum have the highest known mass-specific Ṁo2 and can be severely diffusion limited. Intact spadices of Japanese skunk cabbage Symplocarpus reni

Stomatal movements regulate gas exchange, thus directly affecting the efficiency of photosynthesis and the sensitivity of plants to air pollutants such as ozone. The GARP family transcription factors GOLDEN 2-LIKE1 (GLK1) and GLK2 have known functions in chloroplast development. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) plants expressing the chimeric repressors for GLK1 and -2 (GLK1/2-SRDX) exhibited a closed-stomata phenotype and strong tolerance to ozone. By contrast, plants that overexpress GLK1/2 exhibited an open-stomata phenotype and higher sensitivity to ozone. The plants ex

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is the largest term in the global carbon budget but cannot be directly observed. We present a knowledge-guided machine learning (KGML) framework that partitions eddy covariance-measured net ecosystem exchange (NEE) into gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (RECO) with partitioned water vapor fluxes and CO2 flux source areas from 36 U.S. National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) towers. The KGML is guided by hard physical constraints that enforce mass balance and 'soft' theoretical expectations including optimal stomatal response to vapo

Elevated atmospheric CO₂ is a prominent consequence of global climate change, which substantially alters plant physiological processes and further modulates the environmental fate of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems, thereby threatening agricultural product safety and ecological health. Nevertheless, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying elevated CO₂-regulated uptake, translocation, and metabolism of fungicides in crop plants remain largely unclear. In the present study, cucumber seedlings were selected as the model plant, and integrated physiological detection, subcellu

A plant bionic in situ soil remediation system was designed to rehabilitate acidic cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil in a high geological background area, Kaihua County of Zhejiang Province in China. In this system, citric acid, an environmental-friendly organic compound, was adopted to activate soil Cd. The soil solution was driven into the plant bionic root using a solar powered simulated transpiration system. Activated Cd in the soil solution was adsorbed by the modified polyurethane foam (DTC-LPEI-PUF) in the bionic root. Under the acidic conditions caused by citric acid (pH = 4.5), DTC-LPEI-

In plants, the photo-inhibitory effects of incident lights on the light-harvesting complexes are balanced by photoprotective mechanisms to maintain photosynthesis. With increasing air CO2 concentrations and temperatures, the balance can tilt either way, with unpredictable consequences for biomass assimilated through photosynthesis. As such, it is critical to assess the photosynthetic responses of crop plants growing in future climates to light for developing strategies for sustaining food production. This study evaluated changes in photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence responses to light

Many plant pathogens induce water-soaked lesions in infected tissues. In the case of Pseudomonas syringae (Pst), water-soaking effectors stimulate abscisic acid (ABA) production and signaling, resulting in stomatal closure. This reduces transpiration, increases water accumulation, and induces an apoplastic microenvironment favorable for bacterial growth. Stomata are sensitive to environmental conditions, including light. Here, we show that a period of darkness is required for water-soaking, and that a constant light regime abrogates stomatal closure by Pst. We find that constant light induces

Seed priming with ascorbic acid (AsA) has been widely recognized for enhancing early plant development; however, its effectiveness in improving growth, physiology, yield, and nutritional quality of broccoli under field conditions remains limited. This two-year field study evaluated the effects of AsA seed priming on broccoli under Atlantic Canada soil conditions using a randomized complete block design across two field sites. Four treatments were assessed: non-primed control, water-primed (0 mgL-1), and AsA-primed seeds at 1 mgL-1 and 10 mgL-1. AsA priming significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced pla

Drought is a major limiting factor for the growth and development of pumpkins. Plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs) are major water channels that play a crucial role in the regulation of cellular water status and solute trafficking during drought conditions. CmoPIP1-4 is a plasma membrane-localized protein that is significantly upregulated in roots and leaves under drought-stress conditions. In this study, the overexpression of CmoPIP1-4 enhances drought resistance in yeast. In contrast, CRISPR-mediated CmoPIP1-4 knockout in pumpkin roots increased drought sensitivity. This increased drou

Although transpiration-driven transport of xylem sap is well known to operate under absolute negative pressure, many terrestrial, vascular plants show positive xylem pressure above atmospheric pressure on a seasonal or daily basis, or during early developmental stages. The actual location and mechanisms behind positive xylem pressure remain largely unknown, both in plants that show seasonal xylem pressure before leaf flushing, and those that show a diurnal periodicity of bleeding and guttation. Available evidence shows that positive xylem pressure can be driven based on purely physical forces,

Across the Mediterranean, most olive orchards are still rainfed and have traditionally been planted at low density on the assumption that wide spacing buffers the risk of crop failure in dry years. We tested this assumption with the process-based model OliveCan, simulating three planting densities (100, 204 and 408 trees ha-1) at three contrasting sites (Córdoba, Izmir and Pisa) on shallow and deep soils under a baseline climate and two perturbations (+2 °C and -10% rainfall). Increasing density raised both yield and water productivity (WPy, the yield-to-evapotranspiration ratio) in all studie

Warming-induced desiccation of the fertile topsoil layer could lead to decreased nutrient diffusion, mobility, mineralization and uptake by roots. Increased vertical decoupling between nutrients in topsoil and water availability in subsoil/bedrock layers under warming could thereby reduce cumulative nutrient uptake over the growing season. We used a Mediterranean semiarid shrubland as model system to assess the impacts of warming-induced topsoil desiccation on plant water- and nutrient-use patterns. A 6 yr manipulative field experiment examined the effects of warming (2.5°C), rainfall reductio
