Orbital solitary fibrous tumor: a case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm typically arising in the pleura and involving the orbit as its most common extra-pleural location. We herein describe a well documented case of orbital SFT arising in a 62-year-old woman presenting with progressive swelling of the right upper eyelid and proptosis. The tumor had a benign clinical course, with radical surgical excision followed by regression of the clinical symptoms. We review the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of the orbital SFT described so far, with particular emphasis on differential

A rare primary pericardial DLBCL masquerading as an unexplained malignant pleural effusion in an elderly woman: A case report.

IntroductionPrimary cardiac lymphoma (PCL) is an extremely rare and fatal heart neoplasm. Primary cardiac non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is uncommon, considering the rarity of pericardial diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with advanced pleural metastasis.Case presentationWe reported an 86-year-old female with primary pericardial DLBCL diagnosed initially by pleural effusion cytology. The chest imaging study revealed multiple pericardial lobulated infiltrative masses and epicardial invasion. Subsequently, she underwent an emergent pericardial window with a pericardial mass biopsy. The final his

Cytology of metastatic renal medullary carcinoma in pleural effusion: a study of two cases.

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare and aggressive malignant epithelial neoplasm of the kidney. It almost exclusively affects children and young adults with a sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease. The majority of RMC patients present with widely disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis. Herein, we report two cases of young African-American patients with history of sickle cell trait, hematuria and renal mass, who present with malignant right pleural effusions. The cytology of pleural effusion reveals predominantly clusters and individual tumor cells. The tumor cells show high nuc

Is there any relationship between massive ascites and elevated CA-125 in systemic lupus erythematosus? Case report and review of the literature.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, multisystemic autoimmune disease of variable presentation. Massive ascites in the context of SLE is infrequent. Even so, it has been reported that ascites may be the first manifestation of SLE. It is difficult to diagnose due to the multiple possible aetiological causes of ascites. There is a rare entity called Pseudo-Pseudo Meigs Syndrome (PPMS) in patients with SLE who have ascites, pleural effusion, and CA-125 elevation unrelated to malignancy. We present two cases of massive ascites, pleural effusion and elevation of CA-125 with a history of

Simultaneous tongue metastasis from malignant pleural mesothelioma: Case report and literature review.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the serosal membranes. MPM usually manifests as local invasion, rarely with distant haematogenous metastases in different organs. Few cases of tongue metastasis have been documented. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old man diagnosed with malignant pleural epithelioid mesothelioma together with a simultaneous tongue lesion, which was found to be metastatic malignant mesothelioma. Tongue metastasis from MPM is rare and the oral symptoms it causes could be an early sign of clinical manifestation. For patients with oral symptoms and

Advanced intravascular bronchioloalveolar tumour and review of reports in Japan.

Intravascular bronchioloalveolar tumour (IVBAT) is a rare pulmonary neoplasm. We report the clinical and pathologic findings of two patients who demonstrated unusual clinical features. Both of them were young males who showed a large mass or consolidated shadow and small nodules with pleurisy on chest X-rays due to the invasive growth of tumours. In the first case the presumptive diagnosis of lung carcinoma was made from the discovery of atypical cells in pleural fluid. In the second case pleural mesothelioma was suspected. However, the histological diagnoses of these cases, including the immu

A "patient-like" nude mouse model of parietal pleural human lung adenocarcinoma.

Histologically intact human adenocarcinoma of the lung maintained in nude mice by serial subcutaneous transplantations (4 generations) was harvested and transplanted to the parietal pleura of 11 other nude mice via a novel thoracotomy procedure. Local and regional tumor growth of transplanted tumors occurred in all cases within 31 days, resulting in weight loss, decreased physical activity and death. This rapid-growth "patient-like" model of direct transplantation of a human neoplasm to the parietal pleura may facilitate basic research of pleural malignancies, and stimulate studies of pleural

Aberrant Pax-8 expression in well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma and malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum: a clinicopathologic study.

Serous ovarian neoplasms can overlap morphologically with peritoneal mesothelial proliferations, including well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) and malignant epithelioid mesothelioma (MM). Accurate histologic classification of these neoplasms is important for clinical management. The Pax-8 protein is commonly used for differentiating peritoneal MM from serous carcinoma, but the diagnostic value of Pax-8 for distinguishing WDPM from borderline or low-grade serous tumors is unknown. We used immunohistochemistry staining to assess Pax-8 expression in 33 WDPMs, 34 peritoneal MMs, 48 p

An autopsy case of TFE3-rearranged PEComa-like neoplasm with systematic embolization involving the heart.

A rare autopsy case of malignant transcription factor E3 (TFE3)-rearranged perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa)-like neoplasm is presented. An 84-year-old woman manifested multiple cerebral infarctions and repetitive embolic events in the supra mesenchymal artery (SMA), and the presence of a mobile mass in the heart's left ventricle was also revealed. Tumoral lesions were also found in a pelvic space and a right pleural cavity, and a biopsy was performed from one of the disseminated tumor masses in the right pleura. Pathological diagnosis of TFE3-rearranged PEComa-like neoplasm was def

Pericardial Extramedullary Hematopoiesis Associated with Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of Gastrointestinal or Pancreaticobiliary Origin: A Case Report.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare complication of solid tumor malignancies. We describe the first case of a patient who developed EMH in the pericardium secondary to metastatic gastrointestinal or pancreaticobiliary cancer. A 58-year-old man presented with recurrent episodes of fatigue and shortness of breath and was treated with thoracocentesis and pericardiocentesis for pleural and pericardial effusions, respectively. Owing to a markedly elevated alkaline phosphatase, a bone scan was performed and demonstrated diffuse sclerotic lesions. Evaluation of pleural effusion diagnosed met

Interstitial pneumonitis following intrapleural chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Mucinous neoplasms within the abdomen may disseminate by direct extension through the diaphragm to involve the pleural space. Treatment of this condition is by parietal and visceral pleurectomy followed by hyperthermic intrapleural chemotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report a patient developed persistent right upper lobe interstitial pneumonitis and progressive parenchymal fibrosis following intrapleural chemotherapy treatment with mitomycin C and doxrubicin. The condition persisted until death 28 months later. Death was from progressive intraabdominal disease with intes

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome caused by paraovarian fibroma.

Meigs' syndrome includes an ovarian tumor, usually fibroma, associated with hydrothorax and ascites. It is accepted that uterine tumors, like fibromas, can also be associated with ascites and hydrothorax, but this is extremely rare. The mechanism of formation of peritoneal and pleural effusion is not well documented. The most likely pathogenesis ascribes the fluid formation to the filtration of interstitial fluid in the peritoneal through the tumor capsule, and the diffusion to the pleural space through the diaphragm lymphatic vessels at the foramen of Bochdalek. Paraovarian fibromas are also

Pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma: a reappraisal.

Adenocarcinomas of or in lung that clinically and pathologically mimic diffuse pleural mesotheliomas are rare. We reviewed selected clinical and pathologic features of 15 autopsy/surgical cases previously reported in the medical literature and of 15 additional cases from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Ninety percent of the patients were men. The median age was 61 years. Sixty-three percent of the patients smoked, 17% of them had possible or definite occupational exposure to asbestos, and one patient had microscopically proven asbestosis. Most patients had chest pa

Integrated therapeutic approach to giant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura: report of a case and review of the literature.

The fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare primary tumors, accounting for 5% of malignant pleural neoplasms, which generally originate from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumours generally exhibit clinical benign behavior although 12% of solitary fibrous tumors can be malignant and have worse outcomes. These tumors are considered "giant" when the lesion > 15 cm. Surgical treatment is the best choice for both benign and malignant neoplasms. We retrospectively analyzed the main case series of giant fibrous tumors of the pleura. In addition we report our experienc

Cells of squamous cell carcinoma in pleural, peritoneal and pericardial fluids. Origin and morphology.

The records of two cytopathology laboratories, covering an aggregate of 33 years, were searched for pleural, peritoneal and pericardial fluids reported as containing cells of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This search embraced 9,297 serous fluids from 7,389 patients. Cells of SCCs were found in the fluids from only 46 patients, illustrating the infrequency of such a finding, with most of the SCC cells originating in primary neoplasms of the lung (16), female genital tract (8) or larynx (6). All of the recognized types of SCC cells were found in these fluids. Even so, SCC cells may be mistaken

Pleural Rosai-Dorfman disease complicated with renal clear cell carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare non-malignant disorder characterized by excessive proliferation of histiocytes, the cause of which remains unknown. Although the lymph nodes are the most commonly affected site, some patients may present with extranodal involvement, particularly in the skin, nasal cavity, eyes, and bones. In this report, we aim to present a unique case of RDD with pleural involvement in a 61-year-old patient. To our knowledge, only a few cases of RDD primarily manifesting as pleural disease have b
