Cortical cartography reveals political and physical maps.

Advances in functional imaging have provided noninvasive techniques to probe brain organization of multiple constructs including language and memory. Because of high overall rates of agreements with older techniques, including Wada testing and cortical stimulation mapping (CSM), some have proposed that those approaches should be largely abandoned because of their invasiveness, and replaced with noninvasive functional imaging methods. High overall agreement, however, is based largely on concordant language lateralization in series dominated by cases of typical cerebral dominance. Advocating a u

[A political matter: science and ideology in the 21st century].

In the last two decades, history of science and science studies have been quite reluctant to adopt the notion of ideology when analyzing the dynamics of science. This may be an effect of the decreasing popularity of neo-marxist approaches within this disciplinary field; but it is also due to the fact that alternative approaches have been developed, for example Michel Foucault's notion of problematization, Roland Barthes' semiotic mythology, Bruno Latour's re-interpretation of the ontological difference between fact and fetish in science, or Donna Haraway's semi-fictional re-narrations of the t

The emergence of political priority for safe motherhood in Honduras.

Each year an estimated 500,000 to 600,000 women die due to complications from childbirth, making this one of the leading causes of death globally for women in their reproductive years. In 1987 a global initiative was launched to address the problem, but few developing countries since then have experienced a documented significant decline in maternal mortality levels. Honduras represents an exception. Between 1990 and 1997 the country's maternal mortality ratio--the number of deaths due to complications during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period per 100,000 live births--declined 40%

AIDS in Nicaragua: epidemiological, political, and sociocultural perspectives.

The AIDS epidemic in Nicaragua is several years behind that in the United States and neighboring countries of Central and South America. A combination of events, including the isolation caused by the war of the U.S.-backed Contra army against the Sandinista government, the complete economic embargo imposed on Nicaragua by the United States in 1985, self-sufficiency for blood products, and a low rate of recreational injectable-drug use, have contributed to this situation. Since the Sandinistas were defeated in the general election of 1990, people have returned to Nicaragua from areas where HIV

So different yet so alike? Political collective narcissism predicts blatant dehumanization of political outgroups among conservatives and liberals.

Previous research found that political polarization goes hand in hand with being strongly identified with a political ingroup. In this research, we assumed this should be the case only among those who identify with their political ingroup in a narcissistic way (stemming from frustrated needs and predicting outgroup hostility). This hypothesis was tested in one experimental (Study 4, n = 525) and three cross-sectional (Study 1, n = 320; Study 2, n = 316; Study 3, n = 500) studies conducted among American and Polish participants. In all studies, we found a consistent positive link between politi

The Trouble With "Antiscience": Regulatory Science, Politics, and the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We argue that the label "antiscience" is inaccurate and counterproductive and that its use may hamper the implementation of public health goals. The current crisis is the result of a complex dynamic of loss of trust, rooted in the very real limitations of regulatory science and the inevitable tensions of the relations between science and politics. These have created a political opportunity structure for interested actors to construct mistrust in expertise relating to the production, authorization, and dissemination of scientific facts. We illustrate these dynamics through 3 brief case studies

Interrogating Speculative Futures: The Politics of Imagining Futures With(out) Chronic Illness.

We introduce the empirical papers in this special issue, each of which presents a different mode of speculation in the context of living with, and caring for, chronic conditions: "educated guesswork" about covid reinfection, "ambivalent speculations" in learning to live "at risk" with Barrett's Esophagus and "retrospective speculation" in pressure ulcer prevention. We reflect on how they together contribute to current thinking on the politics of time in health and medicine, and wider conversations in medical anthropology and beyond, about chronic illness as both a lived everyday reality and pa

State Advisory Boards and the Politics of Expertise in US Public Health.

This essay examines the evolving relationship between public health expertise and politics in the United States, focusing on the emergence of state advisory boards during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. While public health decision-making has always involved political trade-offs, recent developments reflect a more direct politicization of federal institutions, including changes in advisory committee composition, constraints on scientific autonomy, and declining public trust. In response, several states have created independent advisory bodies to review federal guidance and guide vaccination p

Reproductive ageism: Late fertility and the politics of good mothering in Chile.

Late fertility is a growing global phenomenon, but midlife mothers continue to be subject to social prejudice. This article introduces the notion of reproductive ageism as an epistemic tool to explore the cultural age norms underlying reproduction and understand how midlife mothers receive, resist, and resignify social prejudice by framing their identities as good mothers and their childrearing practices as good mothering. Drawing on qualitative data produced through 40 interviews on the transition to motherhood with Chilean women, the findings reveal that age remains an important cultural mar

Minor Resistance: The Everyday Politics and Power Dynamics of Assistive Technology Adoption.

In accessibility research, the choice to adopt or abandon assistive technologies (AT) is often treated as a stable proxy for functional fit: to adopt is to confirm a good fit between device features and individual needs, and to abandon is to signal poor fit. While useful for design, we argue that the framework is ill-equipped to account for the sociopolitical forces that shape AT use in historically underserved communities. In this paper, we propose a power-aware framework that recasts adoption not as a transparent expression of fit, but as situated negotiation of power. Drawing from an eight-

Enacting embryos: Practices, ontologies, and politics of the IVF lab post-Dobbs.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn the federal right to abortion, much public and political debate has surrounded gestating and in vitro embryos' "personhood." In this paper, I draw on 15 months of participant observation in biomedical spaces of infertility to reveal how embryos can be enacted as not only unborn children but as many different kinds of entities. I examine how embryos become "multiple" as in vitro fertilization (IVF) professionals inseminate, monitor, and transfer them into patients' bodies: enacting them as makeable, contingent, recordable, animat

What Do We Teach to Engineering Students: Embedded Ethics, Morality, and Politics.

In the past few years, calls for integrating ethics modules in engineering curricula have multiplied. Despite this positive trend, a number of issues with these 'embedded' programs remains. First, learning goals are underspecified. A second limitation is the conflation of different dimensions under the same banner, in particular confusion between ethics curricula geared towards addressing the ethics of individual conduct and curricula geared towards addressing ethics at the societal level. In this article, we propose a tripartite framework to overcome these difficulties. Our framework analytic

Reclaiming Placemaking for an Alternative Politics of Legitimacy and Community in Homelessness.

This study is about the struggle for legitimacy in place among a group of people often assumed to have neither. It examines the roll of informal placemaking and community building in struggles for settlement among people experiencing homelessness. It does so through ethnographic observation, photo-documentation, and participatory action research at three sites in Oakland, California, on which unhoused people (and some housed members of the surrounding community) have demonstrated bold forms of grassroots placemaking on public land. The first site, which came to be known as Housing and Dignity

Medical populism and the politics of dengue epidemics in the Global South.

With millions of cases and thousands of deaths every year in Asia and Latin America, dengue fever continues to be of global public health significance. This article uses the concept of 'medical populism' to analyse the political construction of the 2019 dengue epidemics in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Honduras. Through this framework, we examine the narratives of these outbreaks by reconstructing how political actors simplified the discourse, spectacularised the crises, offered multiple knowledge claims, and forged divisions between the people and 'dangerous others'. Taken together, our ca

Predicting the Patriarchal Politics of Pandemics From Mary Shelley to COVID-19.

I examine the predictive powers of the political science fictions of Mary Shelley, Octavia Butler, and Margaret Atwood for understanding the patriarchal-or men-dominant-dynamics of the politics of pandemics in the twenty-first century. Like her literary followers in post-apocalyptic plague literature, Butler and Atwood, Shelley foresaw that the twenty-first century would be the age of lethal pandemics. Their post-apocalyptic fictions also projected the ways that patriarchal and authoritarian forms of populism could shape the cultural circumstances that can turn a local outbreak of a new and de

[Medical care data as the basis for evidence-based health care politics].

The importance of data and statistics to support the political and tactical goals of the professional medical associations is constantly growing. Statements about the real medical care situation, including investments, operational expenses, use of labor and (medical) effectiveness, economic validity etc., should be reinforced by data and real-world evidence. More and more, in future arguments about the development of medical care, the party with the better data will prevail. That is why the umbrella organization of the medical specialists' professional associations SpiFa-Spitzenverband Fachärz

Hip sonography: background; technique and common mistakes; results; debate and politics; challenges.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the commonest 'congenital' disease of the locomotor system throughout the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Bone & Joint Decade (2000-2010) 10%-15% of patients who are under the age of 50 when they require a hip replacement do so because of infant hip dysplasia. The background; technique and common mistakes; results; debate and politics; and the challenges of infant hip sonography are reviewed.
