Microbial and Insect Gut-Mediated Polystyrene Microplastic Degradation for Environmental Remediation Applications.

Polystyrene (PS), particularly expanded polystyrene (EPS), is an environmentally significant commodity polymer that contributes substantially to secondary microplastic and nanoplastic pollution through environmental weathering and fragmentation. During aging, PS undergoes nano-scale physicochemical transformations, including chain scission, surface oxidation, and the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups, which profoundly influence its environmental fate, microbial colonization, and biodegradation behavior. Conventional remediation technologies remain energy-intensive and often fail

Antibiofilm activity of thymol against Salmonella Infantis on polystyrene and stainless steel surfaces.

Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis (S. Infantis) is one of many Salmonella serovars that have gained attention in the past two decades as a leading cause of foodborne illness globally. This serovar is well known for forming biofilms that are resistant to standard cleaning and disinfection protocols used in processing plants. Thymol, a plant-derived monoterpene phenol, has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against many foodborne pathogens, including Salmonella. This study investigated the efficacy of thymol in inhibiting S. Infantis biofilm formation and inactivating established biofilms on

Effects of Polymer Morphology on Solvent and Catalyst Accessibility during Polyethylene and Polystyrene Autoxidation.

Efficient catalytic deconstruction of plastics requires facile solvent and catalyst access to polymer substrates to minimize mass transfer effects. Autoxidation using Co-(II) acetate, Mn-(II) acetate, and a radical carrier in acetic acid is a promising strategy to deconstruct mixed plastic waste, yet the role of polymer morphology in governing solvent and catalyst accessibility remains poorly understood. Here, in situ simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), complemented by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging and high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), were

Gauging the effects of a chronic exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics in the liver and intestine of Carassius auratus.

Nanoplastics are emerging aquatic contaminants capable of inducing subtle but physiologically relevant disruptions in fish. This study evaluated the effects of a chronic exposure to 44 nm polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) at 100 µg/L for 30 days on goldfish (Carassius auratus), integrating hepatic transcriptional responses land biochemical markers and intestinal metabolomics. Goldfish (n = 7 per group) showed no changes in weight, length or Fulton's condition factor, yet displayed distinct molecular and metabolic alterations. In the liver, PS-NPs significantly increased activities of ALT, AST,

Atomistic Study of Polystyrene Supported by Amidinium-Based Ionic Liquid for CO2 Absorption.

The efficient capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) using polymer, supported ionic liquids (ILs) remains challenging due to limited understanding of atomic-scale interaction mechanisms. Here, a polystyrene (PS) oligomer supported by an amidinium chloride-based IL is proposed as a CO2-absorbing material. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the structural, electronic, and intermolecular interaction energy characteristics of the PS oligomer, amidinium chloride ILs, CO2, and their binary and ternary complexes. Molecular electrostatic potential maps (MEPs), reduced d

Enterohepatic Circulation of Polystyrene Nanoplastics Promotes Intestinal Inflammation by Impairing Enteric Neurons.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants of increasing concern, yet their in vivo fate and mechanisms of intestinal toxicity remain poorly defined. Here, we demonstrate that polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) undergo a previously overlooked enterohepatic recirculation pathway that markedly enhances their intestinal retention. Using oral exposure and a Zombie mouse model with intravenous PS-NPs delivery, we show that systemically absorbed PS-NPs are efficiently captured by the liver, concentrated in the gallbladder, and subsequently reintroduced into the intestine via bile. Chronic PS-NPs e

Uptake, translocation, and phytotoxic mechanisms of polystyrene and polylactic acid nanoplastics in tobacco seedlings.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly recognized as pollutants in agricultural systems, yet their impacts on tobacco remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the uptake, translocation, and physiological responses of tobacco seedlings exposed to polystyrene (PS, 50 nm) and polylactic acid (PLA, 50 nm) NPs under hydroponic conditions. Both PS and PLA exhibited concentration-dependent effects. Low concentrations (10 mg L-1) moderately enhanced biomass accumulation (8.2-24.4%) and photosynthetic performance (21.6-33.5%), whereas high concentrations (100 mg L-1) significantly

Tracing the In Vivo Fate of Polystyrene Nanoplastics via a Lanthanide Copolymerization Labeling Strategy.

The widespread detection of plastic particles in environmental and biological matrices has raised health concerns, yet quantitative evidence on the in vivo behavior of submicron and nanoplastics (S/NPs) remains limited. Here, we developed a sensitive tracking platform by stably incorporating lanthanide elements into polystyrene (PS) S/NPs via emulsion copolymerization. Using this methodology, we systematically investigated in mice the gastrointestinal transit, barrier translocation, biodistribution, and pharmacokinetics of lanthanide-doped PS particles with distinct surface properties: 80 nm (

Intestinal toxicity of functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics in NOD2 models of Crohn's disease susceptibility.

The daily use of plastic products leads to exposure of populations via ingestion, which may affect intestinal health. While a wealth of studies has documented the impact of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs) on models representing healthy human intestine, less is known about their impact on sensitive populations, particularly those at risk of developing inflammatory bowel diseases. This study explored the intestinal response to carboxylated and aminated polystyrene particles (50-500 nm PS-COOH and 50 nm PS-NH2) in vivo and in vitro in models of genetic susceptibility to Crohn's disease. These mod

Polystyrene microplastics facilitate Clostridioides difficile biofilm formation and attenuate antibiotic susceptibility.

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) constitutes a critical global public health challenge, with its high recurrence rates intrinsically linked to spore germination, biofilm formation, and antibiotic resistance. Although microplastics are recognized as emerging foodborne contaminants, their potential to exacerbate the risk of CDI recurrence remains largely unexplored. This study systematically elucidates the impact of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on C. difficile (CD) pathogenicity, biofilm dynamics, and antibiotic resistance. Exposure to PS-MPs (0-400 μg/mL) induced intracellular oxi

Surface interception and transport of 14C-labeled polystyrene nanoplastics by benthic marine organisms.

The fate of nanoplastics (NPs) in marine environments may be strongly influenced by their interactions with benthic organisms, including surface retention and biological association. However, quantitative characterization of these processes remains challenging. In this study, 14C-labeled polystyrene NPs were synthesized to trace their interactions with the marine clam Ruditapes philippinarum and the fungus Schizophyllum commune, two benthic organisms with extensive particle-contact surfaces. In R. philippinarum, the gills acted as the primary filtration interface after 24 h of exposure, showin

Surface functionalization of polystyrene nanoparticles modulates nanoparticle-induced phytotoxicity in Chlorella vulgaris.

Polystyrene nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly released into aquatic systems, but how surface formulations shape their interactions with primary producers remains insufficiently understood. We examined the effects of nominally non-functionalized polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) and amino- (PS-NH2-NPs) or carboxyl-functionalized NPs (PS-COOH-NPs) on Chlorella vulgaris after short-term 72 h exposure to a comparative high concentration (40 mg L-1). All polystyrene NPs remained stable in the culture medium and were detected in EPS-associated and cell-associated fractions, with stronger relative retentio

Polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics differentially impact mouse ovarian follicle function.

Exposure to micro- and nanoplastics is unavoidable. Foods and beverages contain plastic particles from environmental contamination and processing and packaging materials, which are frequently made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Micro- and nanoplastics have been detected in human tissues such as the brain, liver, and placenta, as well as in ovarian follicular fluid, but little is known about the effects nanoplastics have on the female reproductive system. In addition, few studies on the health impacts of nanoplastics have been performed using environmentally relevant plastic types and con

Silver and polystyrene nanoparticles activate oestrogen signalling via cytoplasmic oestrogen receptor.

This study explores the endocrine-disrupting potential of two commonly encountered nanomaterials, nanoplastic and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Many environmental pollutants, especially endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as bisphenol, heavy metals, interfere with hormone function, posing a serious risk for public health, e.g. prevalence of breast cancer, whose incidence correlates strongly with EDC exposure. However, the impact on hormonal homeostasis of many environmental contaminants, such as nanoplastic, is still unknown. Nanoplastic is a product of the weathering process of plasti

UV-weathering affects heteroaggregation and subsequent sedimentation of polystyrene microplastic particles with ferrihydrite.

Microplastic (MP) particles are ubiquitous in aquatic environments where they become exposed to UV-irradiation with subsequent alteration of surface properties. Such particles will interact with naturally occurring colloids being subject to processes like heteroaggregation that affect both MP surface properties and their removal rates from the water column. In this study, we investigated heteroaggregation and subsequent sedimentation of 1 μm polystyrene (PS, pristine and UV-weathered) with ferrihydrite (Fh), an iron (oxy)hydroxide commonly found in nature. Heteroaggregation of pristine PS with

Perilous effects of polystyrene fragments on male reproductive system and tenable directives of remediation.

Indiscriminate use of polystyrene (PS) plastics has posed a major problem for its disposal and recycling on one hand, while on the other hand, fragmentation of these into micro/nano compounds threatens the living world by its toxic effect. The small sized particles can be present in any ecosystem and pose threat to the living world there. The unique properties of these small-scale fragments allow them to cross the barriers of human bodies and affect the vital organ system, altering the normal physiological parameters. Male reproductive system is highly affected by these micro/nanoplastics whic

Neurological Outcomes of Joint Exposure to Polystyrene Micro/Nanospheres and Silver Nanoparticles in Zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: Micro/nanoplastics and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are emerging environmental contaminants widely detected in aquatic environments. However, previous research has primarily focused on the interactions between micro/nanoplastics and organic substances or heavy metals, whereas the interactions and combined toxic effects of micro/nanoplastics with AgNPs remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of coexposure to AgNPs and polystyrene micro/nanospheres (PS M/NPs) on the nervous system, comparing the toxicity of AgNPs alone and in combination

Polystyrene nanoplastics induced lung injury in mice: Insights into lung metabolic disorders.

Micro- and nanoplastics have attracted increasing attention to their potential health hazards. However, the impacts of plastic particles in the air on the respiratory system were largely neglected, and the mechanisms by which micro- and nanoplastics elicit toxicity to the lung have not been clearly recognized. This study aims to clarify the pulmonary toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) with or without surface modification and explore the underlying mechanisms via metabolomics technology. After exposure to bare PSNPs (PSNP-B) or aminated PSNPs (PSNP-NH2) via intratracheal instillation

Neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity alleviation by polystyrene microplastics in cadmium sulfide-exposed zebrafish larvae.

Our recent study confirmed the polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) promote the release of Cd2 + from cadmium sulfide (CdS) pigment under sunlight irradiation, potentially increasing environmental risk. However, despite the anticipated increase in toxicity due to Cd2+ release, PS MPs were found to mitigate the toxicity of CdS pigment, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, sunlight irradiation induced significant neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity in zebrafish larvae exposed to CdS pigment, as evidenced by reduced spontaneous movement, decreased total locomotor distance,

Comparison of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate and sodium polystyrene sulfonate in the treatment of acute hyperkalaemia.

OBJECTIVE: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) have been used for treating acute hyperkalaemia. The pharmacodynamic properties of SZC suggest greater theoretical utility in the acute setting than SPS, but there is no clear guidance on an optimal potassium binder. This study evaluated the efficacy of SZC and SPS in the treatment of acute hyperkalaemia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult hospitalised patients who had acute hyperkalaemia (serum potassium level ≥5.5 mmol/L) and were treated with either SZC or SPS from April 2021 to Augu
