BACKGROUND: Hallux rigidus is the most common arthritic condition of the foot. A randomized clinical trial of first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint hemiarthroplasty with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel implant (Cartiva) demonstrated pain relief and functional outcomes equivalent to first MTP arthrodesis at 2 years postoperation, with no cases of implant fragmentation, wear, or bone loss. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the variation of peak expiratory flow (PEF) over a working week among non-smoking workers without previous asthma who have been exposed to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) dust.
DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 42 operators with exposure to PVC dust (filling hoppers to feed extrusion machines) and 23 employees without exposure to PVC dust in a plant producing PVC pipes in West Africa. A pre-tested questionnaire was administered and PEF was measured using a portable peak flow meter after a day off (day 1), on day 3 and at the end of the week (day 6).

Embolotherapy of arteriovenous malformations (AVM) is not without risk. A 28-year-old woman underwent transcatheter selective embolisation of an AVM in the cheek using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microparticles. Thirty patients with ocular melanoma metastatic to the liver were treated by hepatic arterial chemoembolization using an admixture of cisplatin and polyvinyl sponge. Tumor regression was complete in one patient and partial (greater than 50%) in 13 patients. The total response rate was 46%.
