Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee presenting as a popliteal cyst.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a locally aggressive tumor of the synovium of joints and tendon sheaths. It is commonly seen in the synovial lining of the flexor tendons of the hand and in the synovium of the knee and less commonly in other joints. A case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee in a 60-year-old man, with an intra-articular origin extending extra-articularly, is presented. The interesting point is that the initial diagnosis was a Baker cyst.

Popliteal cysts in children: a retrospective study of 62 cases.

Popliteal cysts in children are usually asymptomatic and are usually found fortuitously by the parents. This study presents a series of 62 children with popliteal cysts. Among the 51 patients who received no treatment, the cysts had already disappeared at the time of the study in 43 patients; the remaining 8 patients are under 14 years of age and are without complaints. This study confirms the hypothesis that the primary popliteal cyst in children usually disappears before the age of 18. Surgery presents unnecessary risks for the patient ; moreover, the chance of recurrence after surgery is re

[Extra-popliteal localizations of adventitial cysts. Review of the literature].

Cystic adventitial disease is an uncommon vascular anomaly first described in 1947 in the external iliac artery. The preferential localization is the popliteal artery although other arteries and veins may also be involved though not always recognized. There have been 45 extra-popliteal localizations of adventitial cysts reported in the literature. Thirty cases involved an artery an 15 a vein. The iliofemoral axis, with 33 reported cases, is the preferential localization of these extra-popliteal adventitial cysts (including 22 arteries and 11 veins). All the other cases also involved a vessel n

Popliteal cysts: a reassessment using magnetic resonance imaging.

The advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prompted the reevaluation of the incidence of popliteal cyst and its associated injuries. We reviewed more than 1000 consecutive MRI examinations of the knee performed on patients referred for evaluation of internal derangement. We report a 5% incidence of popliteal cyst, which is lower than has previously been determined. We believe that the reported higher incidence was due to arthrographic distention of normal, collapsed bursae. The strong association between popliteal cyst and tear of the medial meniscus is confirmed. We report for the first t

The clinical significance of the valve mechanism in communicating popliteal cysts.

In a previous investigation of 41 patients presenting with distended popliteal cysts, a valvular mechanism was demonstrated in 25 cases by means of a specific arthrographic procedure. In the present study the clinical symptoms and signs from the popliteal space and from the joint were assessed and related to the presence or absence of a valvular mechanism. By arthroscopy or arthrotomy seventeen associated knee disorders were diagnosed, e.g., synovitis, osteoarthritis, and tears of a semilunar cartilage. Intraarticular symptoms and intrinsic joint diseases were significantly correlated to the a

Grey scale ultrasonography and arthrography in evaluation of popliteal cysts.

Ultrasonography will reliably detect popliteal cysts of clinically significant size and improvements in ultrasound imaging have enhanced the value of ultrasound in relation to arthrography in the assessment of cyst rupture. Forty-eight knees in 25 patients suspected of having a popliteal cyst were examined by ultrasonography followed immediately by arthrography. Popliteal cysts were demonstrated in 40% (19/48) by ultrasound and in 46% (22/48) by arthrogram. Arthrography detected small cysts not seen with ultrasound, but altrasonic scanning showed cysts which did not fill on arthrography. A rup

Clinical outcome of arthroscopic internal drainage of popliteal cysts with or without cyst wall resection.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the arthroscopic internal drainage of popliteal cysts alone or in combination with cyst wall resection in terms of clinical outcomes. METHODS: Forty-two consecutive patients with symptomatic popliteal cysts received arthroscopic treatment. Specifically, 20 of them received arthroscopic internal drainage (AI group) alone and 22 received arthroscopic internal drainage combined with cyst wall resection (AICR group) through double posteromedial portals. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to identify recurrence of popliteal cysts. The Lysholm sco

Popliteal cysts (Baker's cysts) in adults. I. Clinical and roentgenological results of operative excision.

Forty patients were re-examined between 6 months and 15 years (mean 4 years) after excision of a popliteal cyst. Forty-six operations had been performed, including one bilateral cyst and five recurrent cysts. The history was reviewed with respect to the preoperative symptoms, clinical and roentgenological signs, the operative and histopathological findings and the postoperative course. Fifteen operations were followed by wound healing complications or tense swelling of the calf simulating deep venous thrombosis. At clinical follow-up a reccurent cyst was found in 63 per cent of the knees. A si

Epidermal Cyst Instead of Baker's Cyst in the Popliteal Fossa: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts are usually found in the head, neck, and trunk, and they are very rare to be found in the popliteal fossa. Baker's cyst is the most common cause of popliteal fossa swelling. To our knowledge, this is the seventh reported case of an epidermal inclusion cyst in the knee area. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old male presented with popliteal swelling that had been present since 2016. It was not associated with pain or restriction of movement. On examination, the swelling was firm, well-capsulated, freely mobile, and not fixed to the underlying structure. There was no ten

Direct posterior endoscopic excision of atypical popliteal cyst: A case report.

UNLABELLED: Certain types of popliteal cysts do not possess the common pathophysiology of Baker's cysts, such as location or the presence of a one-way valve lesion. The traditional arthroscopic approach and excision of such atypical popliteal cysts are difficult because they do not communicate with the knee joint, especially when located behind the popliteal neurovascular structure. In this case report, we introduce a direct posterior endoscopic technique for the excision of atypical popliteal cysts when accessing them through the traditional arthroscopic approach is unfeasible. In this case,

Dilemmas in Diagnosing Popliteal Swellings: Nodular Fasciitis Masquerading as Baker's Cyst.

INTRODUCTION: This is a case of a popliteal swelling which was clinically misdiagnosed as a simple popliteal cyst, which turned out to be a benign fibroblastic tumor featuring nodular fasciitis (NF). A swelling in the popliteal fossa by and large is considered to be a Baker's cyst. However, an array of other lesions which can be encountered such as fibroma featuring NF, meniscal cysts, lipoma, aneurysms, bursitis of the biceps femoris tendon, and schwannoma should also be borne in mind since clinical and radiological evaluation may not always be conclusive. This case report presents fibroma fe

Lower limb ischemia due to popliteal artery compression by Baker cyst.

A Baker cyst is the most common mass around the knee joint. It is mostly asymptomatic; however, it may cause knee pain or focal swelling because of compression of vein or nerve. Herein, we report a case of Baker cyst obstructing arterial flow and causing intermittent claudication. An attached polycystic mass was found posterior to the popliteal artery. Needle aspiration was ineffective, and the patient experienced recurrent lower leg pain. Surgical resection was performed, and the patient became symptom free. Baker cyst may cause lower limb ischemia through obstruction of arterial flow, requir

Primary mediastinal hydatid disease leading to popliteal artery hydatid cyst embolization.

Hydatid disease is a zoonosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus . Infected dogs release eggs through their feces and the eggs infect humans through food and water. The most common locations of hydatid cysts are the liver and lungs, but primary mediastinal involvement, though rare, can be encountered. We report on a 16-year-old female with a primary mediastinal hydatid cyst leading to popliteal arterial embolization. The mediastinal lesion was treated with partial pericystectomy with removal of the germinal membrane and prophylactic albendazole. In endemic areas, it is important to consider hyd
