Behavioral and Occupational Health in Military Firefighters: An Understudied Population.

To our knowledge, no studies on health conditions in U.S. military firefighters exist. Data and demographics from the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database were analyzed on several shared medical issues among military personnel and civilian firefighters. Descriptive statistics and Chi-Square goodness of fit tests were conducted to support study aims. Between 2001 and 2015, substantial incidence rate increases (per 10,000) of tinnitus, PTSD, insomnia, and OSA (2005-2015) were observed. Modest to large increases in depressive disorders, adjustment reaction, generalized anxiety disorder, and pani

The adverse effects of policing on population health: A conceptual model.

While negative encounters between police and the community are not a new trend, recent high profile deaths of unarmed people of color have gained widespread national attention and ignited new movements demanding reform, accountability, and progress. Increasingly over the past few decades, researchers have examined the most extreme cases of lethal use of force, describing the context of these violent encounters, situational and personal characteristics, and underlying risk factors. More recent research has aimed to define the broader and more nuanced adverse effects that policing can have on po

Perinatal Maternal Depressive Symptoms as an Issue for Population Health.

The importance of maternal depression for child outcomes is well established, and impairments in psychosocial function and parenting are as severe in women with high subsyndromal levels of depressive symptoms as they are in women with clinical depression. The author conducted a systematic review that explored the association between maternal depressive symptoms and child neurodevelopmental outcomes, including in neuroimaging studies. The results strongly suggest that the influences of maternal depressive symptoms operate across a continuum to influence child outcomes, implying that maternal de

Perceptions of the population and health professionals regarding visceral leishmaniasis.

Based on theoretical qualitative research reference methodology, this study sought to investigate the perception of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) by social actors directly involved in the prevention and control of the disease. Thirty-eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents, focus groups were staged with 18 health workers in an endemic VL area and depositions were collected, which after being processed by content analysis revealed shortcomings and challenges. The population associated VL with dogs, acknowledged their co-responsibility in tackling the disease and demanded in

Strategies for expanding health insurance coverage in vulnerable populations.

BACKGROUND: Health insurance has the potential to improve access to health care and protect people from the financial risks of diseases. However, health insurance coverage is often low, particularly for people most in need of protection, including children and other vulnerable populations. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of strategies for expanding health insurance coverage in vulnerable populations. SEARCH METHODS: We searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), part of The Cochrane Library. www.thecochranelibrary.com (searched 2 November 2012), PubMed (searche

GoWell: the challenges of evaluating regeneration as a population health intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Urban regeneration can be considered a population health intervention (PHI). It is expected to impact on population health but the evidence is limited or weak, in part due to the difficulties of evaluating PHIs. We explore these challenges using GoWell as a case study. METHOD: A 10-year evaluation of housing improvement and urban regeneration in 15 deprived areas in Glasgow, Scotland (2005-2015). RESULTS: Challenges faced include: definition and changing nature of the intervention; identifying the recipients of the intervention; and constraints of study design affecting capacity t

Air pollution and health: emerging information on susceptible populations.

Outdoor air pollution poses risks to human health in communities around the world, and research on populations who are most susceptible continues to reveal new insights. Human susceptibility to adverse health effects from exposure to air pollution can be related to underlying disease; demographic or anthropometric characteristics; genetic profile; race and ethnicity; lifestyle, behaviors, and socioeconomic position; and location of residence or daily activities. In health research, an individual or group may have an enhanced responsiveness to a given, identical level of pollution exposure comp

The Soviet legacy in diagnosis and treatment: Implications for population health.

This article reviews diagnosis and treatment in the Commonwealth of Independent States in three clinical areas: tuberculosis, substance misuse, and neurological disorders in children. While the specific problems in each of these areas differ greatly, commonalities emerge, pointing to the continued influence of the Soviet past. Although progress in developing evidence-based medicine is being made, the isolation of Soviet science from Western developments has resulted in the widespread use of outdated diagnostic procedures and treatment protocols, while finance mechanisms still encourage unneces

Folate status of the population in the Canadian Health Measures Survey.

BACKGROUND: Low folate concentrations are inversely associated with birth defects, including neural tube defects, congenital heart disease and oral clefts. Conversely, high folate concentrations may be associated with adverse outcomes, including increased risk of colorectal cancer among those with pre-existing neoplasms. The purpose of our study was to investigate the folate status of a nationally representative sample of Canadians, including a subset of women of childbearing age. METHODS: We examined red blood cell folate concentrations among members of the general population aged 6-79 years

Life meaning: an important correlate of health in the Hungarian population.

One of the 5 coping scales in Rahe's Brief Stress and Coping Inventory, entitled Life Meaning, was examined in relation to demographic characteristics, other coping measures, and health status in a sample of 12,640 Hungarian participants. Participants were selected to represent the country's population according to sex, age, and place of residence. The study also explored the contribution of life meaning to the explanation of variations of middle-aged (45-64 years) male and female mortality rates across 150 subregions in Hungary. On an ecological level life meaning proved to be inversely relat

Severity of premenstrual symptoms in a health maintenance organization population.

OBJECTIVE: To describe severity of emotional and physical symptoms in a large diverse sample; to examine demographic, health status, and behavioral correlates of symptom severity; and to describe use of medications and alternative remedies for premenstrual symptoms. METHODS: A total of 1194 women, ages 21-45, selected from members of a large northern California health maintenance organization, completed daily ratings of symptom severity for two menstrual cycles. An empirically derived algorithm defined symptom severity groups as minimal (n = 186), moderate (n = 801), severe (n = 151), or prem

[Periodontal health and care needs in a sample of the Belgian population].

An epidemiological survey was carried out of among staff members of the Catholic University of Louvain. A total of 402 subjects, age 35 to 65, were examined. Periodontal lesions were estimated using the CPITN index (WHO). Only one subject presented no signs of gingival bleeding in any part of the mouth. 41.4% of the subjects presented a deep periodontal pocket in at least one sextant. Many subjects, although not presenting deep or moderately deep periodontal pockets (28.5%) needed scaling and rootplanning or other treatments to eliminate plaque retentive factors. In this sample, representing a

Maxillary sinusitis as an indicator of respiratory health in past populations.

Chronic infectious respiratory disease in a past human population is investigated through the quantification of maxillary sinusitis among Iroquoian horticulturists. Three hundred forty-eight right and left maxillae of a Southern Ontario Iroquoian skeletal sample, Uxbridge Ossuary, ca. AD 1440, were examined for evidence of chronic infection (minimum number of individuals = 207: 114 adults, 22 adolescents, 38 juveniles and 33 infants). Modern clinical criteria were applied to differentiate lesions of respiratory and dental origin. Osseous lesions of the maxillary sinuses were observed in 50% of

Helicobacter pylori infection in Estonian population: is it a health problem?

The role of Helicobacter pylori infection in traditionally noncommunicable diseases as chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric carcinoma became more evident during the first decade of H. pylori studies. To analyse and evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori infection in Estonia as a population health problem, the data of three randomly selected samples of Estonian population aged over 15 years were used. The infection rate assessments in two representative samples of the population (Kambja 157 persons and Kuressaare 224 persons) were based on H. pylori colonization in the gastric mucosa, and

Community health service utilisation and needs in an elderly population.

This study was carried out to determine community health service utilisation and needs of an elderly population living in a geographically defined area of Dublin. A random sample of 208 persons was taken from the 11,852 elderly persons living in the area. Activities of daily living and cognitive function were assessed in the person's own home. Whilst the community health services provided were less than comprehensive, they were targeted to those most in need; the very elderly, those living alone, and persons with a mental or physical disability. Objectively assessed need for further services f
