Comprehensive evaluation on progressive development strategies in DENV surveillance and monitoring infection rate among vector population.

The elevated rise in dengue infection rate has been a health burden worldwide and it will continue to impact global health for years to come. Accumulated literature holds accountable the geographical expansion of the mosquito species transmitting the dengue virus DENV. The frequency of this viral disease outbreaks has increased rapidly in the recent years, owing to various geo-climatic and anthropological activities. Due to scarcity of any effective control measures, there has been a continuous traceable rise in mortality and morbidity rates. However, it has been reported that the spate of inc

Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome in Canada: population-based surveillance and role of SARS-CoV-2 linkage.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS) is a rare condition temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Using national surveillance data, we compare presenting features and outcomes among children hospitalized with PIMS by SARS-CoV-2 linkage, and identify risk factors for intensive care (ICU). METHODS: Cases were reported to the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program by a network of >2800 pediatricians between March 2020 and May 2021. Patients with positive versus negative SARS-CoV-2 linkages were compared, with positive linkage defined as any positive molecular

Ophthalmic Solution Safety Profile: Active Surveillance of a Sodium Hyaluronate/Chondroitin Sulfate Combination in Peruvian Population.

BACKGROUND: Sodium hyaluronate/chondroitin sulfate fixed combination plays an essential role in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca, a multifactorial disease accompanied by ocular symptoms like alteration of the tear film. Despite low or no absorption of such drugs, these can cause secondary effects. An essential tool in the study of medication behavior is active pharmacovigilance. Unlike spontaneous reporting pharmacovigilance, this tool allows an appraisal of adverse drug reactions (ADRs)' real incidence, a higher capacity to identify safety signals, the relationship with concomitant

Neisseria gonorrhoeae Population Genomics: Use of the Gonococcal Core Genome to Improve Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a globally prevalent sexually transmitted infection. The dynamics of gonococcal population biology have been poorly defined due to a lack of resolution in strain typing methods. METHODS: In this study, we assess how the core genome can be used to improve our understanding of gonococcal population structure compared with current typing schemes. RESULTS: A total of 1668 loci were identified as core to the gonococcal genome. These were organized into a core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme (N gonorrhoeae cgMLST v1.

Pancreatic cancer incidence trends: evidence from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) population-based data.

BACKGROUND: Annual pancreatic cancer incidence rates have been increasing. We examine pancreatic cancer incidence trends by demographics and histologic type. METHODS: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) registries were available to assess temporal trends and pancreatic cancer rates from 1974 to 2013. RESULTS: Pancreatic cancer incidence rates declined between the 1970s and 1990s but increased from 1994 to 2013 among White males. Among non-Hispanic White and Hispanic males, the annual percent change (APC) in incidence between 1992 and 2013 was 0.84% and 0.73%, resp

A protracted mumps outbreak in Western Australia despite high vaccine coverage: a population-based surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: In 2007-08, a genotype J mumps outbreak occurred among Aboriginal people in northern Western Australia, despite high vaccine coverage. In March, 2015, a second protracted mumps outbreak occurred in northern Western Australia and spread widely across rural areas of the state. This time the outbreak was caused by a genotype G virus and again primarily affected Aboriginal people. We aimed to describe the epidemiology of this outbreak. METHODS: In this population-based surveillance study, we analysed statutory notifications and public health case follow-up data from the Western Austra

Mixed gonococcal infections in a high-risk population, Sydney, Australia 2015: implications for antimicrobial resistance surveillance?

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that mixed-strain gonococcal infections can occur. However, it remains unclear whether such infections impact upon the reliability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. In this study, we aimed to resolve this question by intensively sampling isolates from gonorrhoea-positive specimens in a high-risk population in Sydney, Australia. METHODS: A total of 615 N. gonorrhoeae isolates, originating from 63 clinical samples (31 rectal swabs and 32 throat swabs), were characterized. All isolates were subject to N. gonorrhoeae iden

A Population-Based Acute Meningitis and Encephalitis Syndromes Surveillance in Guangxi, China, May 2007-June 2012.

OBJECTIVES: Acute meningitis and encephalitis (AME) are common diseases with the main pathogens being viruses and bacteria. As specific treatments are different, it is important to develop clinical prediction rules to distinguish aseptic from bacterial or fungal infection. In this study we evaluated the incidence rates, seasonal variety and the main etiologic agents of AME, and identified factors that could be used to predict the etiologic agents. METHODS: A population-based AME syndrome surveillance system was set up in Guigang City, Guangxi, involving 12 hospitals serving the study communit

[Tracking of cardiovascular risk factors among school children: a four-year population surveillance in Susa, Tunisia].

In order to confirm the phenomenon of tracking of cardiovascular risk factors among school children, we undertook in 2003, a prospective survey of a population of 789 pupils aged 13 to 15 years who had participated in a first investigation on cardiovascular risk factors in 1999. We were able to follow and study 453 pupils (57.4% of the initial population). Prevalences of hypertension and obesity were respectively 11.3% and 6.1% without significant difference between sexes. On the other hand, hypercholesterolemia was significantly more elevated among girls than boys (16.1% versus 9.3%, p = 0.03

[Winter surveillance of cold exposure effects on health among the homeless population in the Paris area: data from the Coordinated Health Surveillance of Emergency Department network (Organisation de la surveillance coordonnée des urgences [Oscour(®)])].

BACKGROUND: A program for helping homeless individuals in winter is implemented from November 1(st) to March 31(st) each year in France. Its aim is to prevent morbidity and mortality in this population during cold spells and periods of severe cold. A health surveillance system of the homeless population in the Paris area has been proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and to alert decision-makers if an unusual increase in cold-weather effects is observed. The goal of this study was the creation of an indicator for the proposed surveillance system based on emergency department ac

Surrogate virus neutralization test as a scalable and reliable tool for immune surveillance in booster-vaccinated populations.

With waning vaccine-induced immunity and the continued emergence of immune-evasive SARS-CoV-2 variants, booster vaccination has become essential for sustaining population-level protection. However, scalable and reliable serological tools for monitoring post-booster humoral immunity across different vaccine platforms remain insufficiently evaluated. We conducted a cross-sectional study and a booster cohort study to systematically compare the performance and concordance of surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT), pseudovirus neutralization test (pVNT), and binding IgG antibody assays. Development and Psychometric Validation of a Brief Oral Health Literacy Instrument for Use in Population-Based Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Oral health literacy (OHL) plays a critical role in shaping individuals' engagement with oral health systems and their ability to translate information into effective self-care and service use. While the Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD-14) scale has demonstrated strong psychometric performance, brief and psychometrically robust instruments explicitly optimized for large-scale surveillance remain limited. This study sought to develop a concise HeLD version that preserves sensitivity to low OHL while remaining operationally feasible for large-scale monitoring. METHODS: This cross

The use of oral fluids and sock samples for monitoring key pathogens in pig populations for surveillance purposes.

Despite the prevalence of co-infections and the association of over 50 viral and 46 bacterial pathogens with pig diseases, little is known about their simultaneous occurrence, particularly in commercial pig farming environments where health programs are in place. To address this knowledge gap, this study aimed to evaluate the pathogen threshold of respiratory and enteric pathogens in pig herds using the Pork MultiPath™ (PMP1 and PMP2, respiratory and enteric respectively) technology, which detects multiple pathogens simultaneously in a single reaction with high sensitivity and specificity. Comparison of molecular surveillance methods to assess changes in the population genetics of Plasmodium falciparum in high transmission.

A major motivation for developing molecular methods for malaria surveillance is to measure the impact of control interventions on the population genetics of Plasmodium falciparum as a potential marker of progress towards elimination. Here we assess three established methods (i) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) barcoding (panel of 24-biallelic loci), (ii) microsatellite genotyping (panel of 12-multiallelic loci), and (iii) varcoding (fingerprinting var gene diversity, akin to microhaplotyping) to identify changes in parasite population genetics in response to a short-term indoor residual sp

A 5.5-year surveillance of esophageal and gastric cardia precursors after a population-based screening in China.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study aimed to estimate the time to precursor progression and to identify significant predicators. METHODS: One hundred thirty-three precursor and 311 normal cases detected in a population-based screening were surveyed for 5.5 years. Precursor progression was defined as worsening of dysplasia or development of a new precursor. Time to precursor progression was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. Significant predicators were estimated by Cox proportional regression. RESULTS: Of the 133 precursor cases, 33.08% (44/133) progressed or recurred, 30.08% (40/133) persiste

Genetic surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum populations following treatment policy revisions in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Genetic surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) can track antimalarial-resistant strains, to inform decision-making by National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs). The GenRe-Mekong project prospectively collected 5982 samples in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) between 2017 and 2022, genotyping drug resistance markers, and barcodes that recapitulate genetic variation. Genotypes were analyzed with the grcMalaria R package, first described in this paper, to translate genetic epidemiology data into actionable visual information. Since 2020, Pf incidences decreased rapidly, accompanied by a d
