Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common delayed complication of cataract surgery, particularly in younger patients and those receiving multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). Intraoperative posterior capsulorhexis has been proposed as a preventive technique, but its use in adult cataracts is less documented. A 27-year-old patient presented with bilateral congenital posterior subcapsular cataracts, high myopia, and astigmatism. Comprehensive preoperative examination, including visual function and retinal imaging, was performed. The patient underwent phacoemulsification with toric multif

PURPOSE: To report the long-term clinical and histopathologic findings in infant monkeys following a lensectomy and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation using two different surgical techniques.
METHODS: A lensectomy and IOL implantation was performed on the right eye of 10 infant monkeys. A posterior capsulotomy was performed using a limbal approach in 5 monkeys (Group 1), and a pars plana approach in 5 other monkeys (Group 2). The residual refractive error in the pseudophakic eye was then corrected with a contact lens and the fellow eye was occluded for 70% of the daylight hours. The monkeys

BACKGROUND: Capsular changes after congenital cataract surgery may compromise the visual axis in infants and may necessitate secondary surgical intervention. In such situations, identifying a safe dissection plane can be challenging under conventional microscopic visualization, and adjunctive intraoperative imaging may be beneficial.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-month-old boy diagnosed with bilateral congenital cataracts underwent phacoaspiration, posterior capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy with planned aphakia. Despite continued topical treatment, the patient developed progressive posterior syn

The present study estimated the 5-year cumulative probability of Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy according to the diopter power of implanted hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs). Data were retrospectively collected of 15,375 eyes having cataract surgery and in-the-bag implantation of hydrophobic acrylic monofocal IOLs at the Ophthalmology Unit of Kymenlaakso Central Hospital, Kotka, Finland between the years 2007 and 2016. The cumulative probability of Nd:YAG capsulotomy was calculated by Kaplan-Meier estimates, and potential risk factors were analyzed using the Cox proportional ha

PURPOSE: Previous analyses of Medicare claims data, as well as clinical series, have suggested that performance of neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy after extracapsular cataract surgery increases significantly the risk of retinal detachment. However, methodologic problems with previous research limit the strength of conclusions that can be drawn from these earlier studies. This study was designed to resolve those methodological limitations while using a population-based approach for assessment of the independent association between the performance of Nd:YAG laser posterior cap

BACKGROUND: Overhead throwing athletes are predisposed to ossification along the superior to inferior posterior glenoid rim, termed thrower's exostosis or a Bennett lesion. These lesions can result in posterior shoulder pain during throwing and decreased shoulder range of motion, and they can be associated with posterior labral tears and undersurface rotator cuff tears. In this video technique, we describe the arthroscopic debridement and resection of a symptomatic unstable Bennett lesion in a collegiate baseball pitcher who had unsuccessful nonoperative treatment.
INDICATIONS: Currently, the

The effects of bilateral anterior capsulotomy were analyzed in 12 patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS). All of the patients underwent bilateral anterior capsulotomy. In 7 patients, the target was the anterior one third of the anterior limb of the capsula interna, while in 5 patients, the posterior one third of this structure was targeted. Radiofrequency thermolesions were created at 80 degrees C for 60 s. These surgeries resulted in a reduction in TS symptoms (motor and vocal tics and/or obsessive-compulsive behavior) of >50% in all patients, regardless of the target. A comparison of the two

BACKGROUND: The posterolateral approach is one of the most common approaches used during hip arthroplasty. A posterior soft tissue repair is necessary to limit the risk of postoperative dislocation. For a trapezoidal capsulotomy, the proximal limb divides the superior band of the iliofemoral ligament (Bigelow's ligament). A transosseous repair frequently leaves a defect in this region, which may elevate the risk for dislocation. The purpose of this article is to describe a simple, rational technique for reinforcing the posterior capsular repair.
DESCRIPTION OF TECHNIQUE: A meticulous exposure

PURPOSE: To compare the results of insertion of low-power or zero-power posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC IOLs) after cataract extraction in eyes with high myopia with leaving the eye aphakic.
METHODS: The outcome of extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with low-power or zero-power PC IOLs in 184 consecutive highly myopic (axial length = 26.0 mm or longer) eyes was compared with 184 consecutive highly myopic eyes receiving ECCE without PC IOLs. Axial length, preoperative visual acuity, age, sex, and follow-up were similar between both groups.
RESULTS: In the pseudophakic eyes, the

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Cataract surgery in diabetic individuals worsens pre-existing retinopathy and triggers the development of diabetic ocular complications, although the underlying cellular and molecular pathophysiology remains elusive. We hypothesise that lens surgery may exaggerate pre-existing retinal inflammation in diabetes, which may accelerate neurovascular degeneration in diabetic eyes.
METHODS: Male heterozygous Ins2Akita mice (3 months of age) and C57BL/6 J age-matched siblings received either lens capsulotomy (to mimic human cataract surgery) or corneal incision (sham surgery) in the
