The present study describes the ipsilateral and contralateral cortico-cortical and cortico-thalamic connectivity of the parietal visual areas, posterior parietal caudal cortical area (PPc) and posterior parietal rostral cortical area (PPr), in the ferret using standard anatomical tract-tracing methods. The two divisions of posterior parietal cortex of the ferret are strongly interconnected, however area PPc shows stronger connectivity with the occipital and suprasylvian visual cortex, while area PPr shows stronger connectivity with the somatomotor cortex, reflecting the functional specificity

Dysfunctional thalamocortical interactions have been suggested as putative mechanisms of ineffective pain modulation and also suggested as possible pathophysiology of fibromyalgia (FM). However, it remains unclear which specific thalamocortical networks are altered and whether it is related to abnormal pain perception in people with FM. Here, we conducted combined vertex-wise subcortical shape, cortical thickness, structural covariance, and resting-state functional connectivity analyses to address these questions. FM group exhibited a regional shape deflation of the left posterior thalamus enc

We describe a 73-year-old man who developed diplopia as the initial manifestation of a left thalamic infarction. By the time he reached the emergency department, clouded consciousness precluded localization of the lesion. Results of brain MRI were initially interpreted as negative. Ophthalmologic examination several hours later disclosed a small vertical ocular misalignment attributed to skew deviation. This finding led to careful scrutiny of the upper brainstem on MRI. Comparison of the diffusion, apparent diffusion coefficient, and exponential apparent diffusion coefficient MRI studies allow

Chemokines are implicated in the neuroinflammation of several chronic neurodegenerative disorders. However, the precise role of chemokines in neurodegeneration is unknown. Thiamine deficiency (TD) causes abnormal oxidative metabolism in the brain as well as a well-defined microglia activation and neurodegeneration in the submedial thalamus nucleus (SmTN), which are common features of neurodegenerative diseases. We evaluated the role of chemokines in neurodegeneration and the underlying mechanism in a TD model. Among the chemokines examined, TD selectively induced neuronal expression of monocyt

Glycine critically regulates locomotor and sensory processing, with its presynaptic glycine transporter 2 (GlyT2) serving as key therapeutic targets for modulating glycinergic neurotransmission. While GlyT2 inhibitors hold clinical promise, the specialization of spatially distributed GlyT2 neuronal populations across the brain remains incomplete. Here, we crossed GlyT2-iCre with Ai9 to generate GlyT2-iCre-tdTomato mice, enabling anatomical mapping and functional interrogation of GlyT2 circuits. Here, we generated GlyT2-iCre-tdTomato mice through crossbreeding GlyT2-iCre and Ai9 lines, enabling

BACKGROUND: While amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is widely recognised as a multi-network disorder with extensive frontotemporal and cerebellar involvement, sensory dysfunction is relatively under evaluated. Subtle sensory deficits have been sporadically reported, but there is a prevailing notion that sensory pathways may be relatively spared in ALS.
METHODS: In a prospective neuroimaging study we have systematically evaluated cerebral grey and white matter structures involved in the processing, relaying and mediation of sensory information. Twenty two C9orf72 positive ALS patients (C9+ A

Since clinical features of chronic muscle pain originating from the low back and limbs are different (higher prevalence and broader/duller sensation of low back muscle pain than limb muscle pain), spinal and/or supraspinal projection of nociceptive information could differ between the two muscles. We tested this hypothesis using c-Fos immunohistochemistry combined with retrograde-labeling of dorsal horn (DH) neurons projecting to ventrolateral periaqueductal grey (vlPAG) or ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus (VPL) by fluorogold (FG) injections into the vlPAG or VPL. Deep Brain Stimulation of the posterior subthalamic area is an emergent target for the treatment of Essential Tremor. Due to the heterogeneous and complex anatomy of the posterior subthalamic area, it remains unclear which specific structures mediate tremor suppression and different side effects. The objective of the current work was to yield a better understanding of what anatomical structures mediate the different clinical effects observed during directional deep brain stimulation of that area. We analysed a consecutive series of 12 essential tremor patients. Imaging analysis and systematic

The initial aim of the experiments described here was to identify and quantify the cortical and thalamic connections of visual cortical areas located in the vicinity of the suprasylvian sulcus. Inputs to various sites in this region were studied by making small injections of wheat germ agglutinin (conjugated to horseradish peroxidase) at physiologically identified locations. Retrogradely labeled cells were counted in each identifiable area of cortex and in thalamic nuclei. Some injections yielded quantitatively similar distributions of labeled cells, and it is suggested that such evidence prov

Identification of the brain structures in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rat is very important for the experimental work of many neuroscientists. Our intention was to recognize most of the structures without overlapping the MRI sections with the histological templates. Three live rats were used for this study who were examined in a micro-MRI apparatus by performing T2-weighted sequences in serial brain sections. Most of the white matter structures were easily identified, e.g. the anterior commissure, corpus callosum with forceps minor and major, cingulum, external and internal cap

In 22 crab-eating monkeys (Macaca irus), either lesions or HRP injections were made in the frontol parietal operculum and, for the purpose of contrast, in the postcentral gyrus to observe their fiber connectionl with the posterior ventral nucleus (VP). The exposed opercular part, reported to consist of areas 3b, 1, and 2 showed scanty fiber connections with VP. The buried parietal operculum had connections with the media (VPM) and lateral (VPL) nuclei of VP, corresponding to the second somatic sensory cortex (SII). This cortica area was connected, in VPM, to its ventromedial part, while the ba

The goal of the studies described was to evaluate the role of NMDA receptor-mediated glutamate excitotoxicity in the pathogenesis of selective neuronal loss due to thiamine deficiency. Administration of the central thiamine antagonist pyrithiamine to adult male rats resulted in a sequence of neurological symptoms including ataxia and loss of righting reflex followed by convulsions. Prior to the onset of convulsions, neuropathologic evaluation revealed significant neuronal loss in the ventral posterior medial thalamic nucleus. However, in vivo cerebral microdialysis at preconvulsive stages did

In order to elucidate the geometric organization of projections from the barrel cortex to the thalamus, iontophoretic injections of the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin were made. The injections were confined to one barrel column (i.e. barrel in layer IV + cortical tissue above and below it). Axonal terminations could be demonstrated in three thalamic nuclei: reticularis (RT), ventrobasalis (VB) and posterior (PO). Anterograde terminal labelling was obtained in RT + VB; in PO only; or in RT + VB + PO. The terminals labelled in PO were much larger than those in RT and VB. T

The intergeniculate leaflet of the lateral geniculate nucleus is considered to modulate circadian activity rhythms probably mediated by a direct neuronal connection to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The present study in the gerbil demonstrates, by anterograde tracing with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoaglutinin (PHA-L), the existence of an additional neuronal projection from a subportion of the lateral geniculate nucleus, involving the intergeniculate leaflet, directly to the pineal gland. PHA-L-immunoreactive nerve fibers originating from perikarya at the injection site were located under the optic t

BACKGROUND: Recent findings argue for a pathway in humans for sensing the orientation of gravity and controlling upright body posture, separate from the one for orientation perception of the visual world. Stroke patients with contraversive pushing were shown to experience their body as oriented upright when actually tilted about 20 degrees to the ipsilesional side, in spite of normal visual-vestibular functioning. A recent study suggested the involvement of posterolateral thalamus typically associated with the disorder.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between pushing behavior and thal

Neuronal migration is essential for constructing functional neural networks. Two posterior septal (PS) nuclei, the triangular septal nucleus and bed nuclei of the anterior commissure, are involved in fear and anxiety. During development, glutamatergic PS neurons undergo long-distance rostrodorsal migration from the thalamic eminence (TE) of the diencephalon, then settle in the caudalmost telencephalon. However, the developmental behavior of PS neurons and the guidance structures facilitating their migration remain unknown. We previously demonstrated the migration of PS neurons along the fornix

BACKGROUND: Superior medullary velum cerebral cavernous malformations pose a challenge in terms of appropriate microsurgical approach. Safe access to this deep location as well as preservation of surrounding anatomical structures, in particular the superior cerebellar peduncle just lateral to the superior medullary velum and the dentate nuclei, is paramount to achieve a good functional outcome.
METHODS: Cadaveric dissections provide useful knowledge of the normal anatomy while tractography allows a better understanding of the individual anatomy in the presence of a lesion. The medial-tonsilla

We report marked intracerebral calcification in eight thalassemic patients with hypoparathyroidism, followed regularly at the Haematology Research Center, Department of Pediatrics, Shiraz, Iran. Their mean age was 16.8 years (range 12-21 years). Six of the eight patients with thalassemia were females. The daily dose of calcitriol was between 0.01 and 0.1 microg/kg b. wt. Calcium-phosphate metabolic control was good or satisfactory in all patients. Three patients had at least one episode of generalized convulsions caused by hypocalcemia, before and during treatment. One patient complained of ch

Neuronal necrosis in the brain resulting from status epilepticus of 15 to 120 minutes duration in ventilated and well-oxygenated rats was assessed. Seizures were induced by inhalation of the convulsant gas flurothyl, and terminated by withdrawal of flurothyl and a single injection of thiopental. The animals were allowed to recover for one week, and neuronal damage was assessed by cell counts following subserial sectioning of the brain and microscopical examination of the sections. Infarction of the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra occurred in 5 of the 6 animals with seizure duration of

We report an autopsy case of a 67-year-old man clinicogenetically diagnosed as having spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type III (Kugelberg-Welander disease), showing slowly progressive muscle wasting and weakness of the extremities. His brother showed similar manifestations. Autopsy revealed neuronal loss and severe gliosis in the anterior horns of the spinal cord, a marked neurogenic change of skeletal muscles and mild degeneration of cardiomyocytes. Chromatolytic change was seen in the anterior horn, but not in the Clarke's and thalamic nuclei. The anterior spinal roots were atrophic, and there
