A spotlight on multidrug-resistant Salmonella in global poultry production.

Salmonellosis is among the most common foodborne infections worldwide, posing a significant economic and health burden. Poultry meat is a primary risk factor for human salmonellosis. The mass production and distribution of poultry meat have contributed to the spread of pathogenic Salmonella. Combined with antimicrobial resistance and the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella infections due to animal housing conditions and the excessive and incorrect use of antimicrobial drugs in humans and animals, these factors create new challenges for food safety control. Salmonella shows resistance

Epigenomic insights into the immune regulatory mechanism of GBP4L in poultry.

High-temperature environments induce heat stress in poultry, leading to compromised immune function and reduced disease resistance. In the Dexamethasone-induced stress-related immune suppression model in chickens, both transcriptomic and proteomic analyses revealed significantly low expression of GBP4L, highlighting its potential as a key target for combating stress. It is currently unclear whether GBP4L can alleviate the heat stress response in the body. We conducted this study to explore the role of GBP4L in stress resistance. First, to evaluate the role of GBP4L in immune function, we estab

Development and Validation of a Histologic Respiratory Index (HRI) in Poultry.

Respiratory viral diseases infecting poultry lead to variable lesions in the respiratory organs, including nasal sinuses, trachea, lungs, and air sacs. Additional involvement of eyelids/conjunctiva was reported. The distribution and the intensity of lesions depend on multiple factors, including virulence, the host's immunity, and secondary or concurrent infections. It may be challenging to detect remarkable lesions during experimental infections conducted in a controlled environment because some viruses fail to produce the intense lesions seen in field cases. This creates a challenge in develo

Reduction of Salmonella gallinarum in poultry with phage-based interventions.

Salmonella Gallinarum infections (fowl typhoid) cause significant production as well economic losses. We isolated and characterized (viability in simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluids, host-range, and genomic sequencing) four Salmonella Gallinarum phages to create a phage-based treatment for Salmonella Gallinarum infections in chickens. The phages were distinct based on genomic sequencing and effectively lysed Salmonella Gallinarum strains isolated from diseased chickens in Pakistan. Chicks (7 day-old) were challenged with Salmonella Gallinarum and treated with encapsulated p

The impact of multiple exposures and movement on the fear response of poultry.

Fear tests are a common research method to assess the affective state of an animal. This study aimed to assess: 1) the impact of repeated exposure to fear tests on fear response and, 2) how the addition of movement to fear stimuli during a novel object test impacts bird fear response. Over two trials, a total of 3,600 Ross 308 birds (1800 birds/trial) were raised until 42 days of age. At 23d, 30d, and 37d, three fear tests were performed, novel object, human approach, and response to observer tests. The novel object test was split into three movement treatments, stationary, intermittent, and c

Progress in the application of Salmonella vaccines in poultry: A mini review.

Salmonella is a critical group of zoonotic pathogens that are widely spread in poultry, causing avian salmonellosis. This disease usually leads to significant reductions in poultry performance, including reduced egg production in laying hens, decreased hatchability in chicks, and retarded growth in broilers. As a result, worldwide poultry industry suffers serious economic losses. Vaccination serves as an essential strategy for preventing Salmonella infection in poultry, effectively reducing susceptibility and alleviating disease symptoms, while also minimizing fecal shedding and environmental

Evidence for struvite in poultry litter: effect of storage and drying.

The use of spectroscopic techniques (especially phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance [(31)P-NMR] and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy) has recently advanced the analysis of the speciation of P in poultry litter (PL) and greatly enhanced our understanding of changes in P pools in PL that receive alum (aluminum sulfate) to reduce water-soluble P and control ammonia emissions from poultry houses. Questions remain concerning changes of P species during long-term storage, drying, or after application of PL to cropland or for other uses, such as turfgrass. In this study, we inve

Dermatitis in a horse associated with the poultry mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

This is the first documented case report of dermatitis associated with the poultry mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) in a horse. It occurred in a 16-year-old horse that was in contact with domestic hens. Clinical signs consisted of severe pruritus, with self-induced hair loss mainly on the head. Despite the multiple skin scrapings performed during both day- and nighttime, mites were only isolated from the in-contact poultry and from the horse's environment, and not the horse. The animal was treated using a 2% permethrin solution, sprayed on the entire body once a week for 4 weeks, and by decontamina

Design and Immunogenicity of a Nanoparticle Combination Vaccine for Salmonella in Poultry.

Salmonella enterica serovars (Salmonella) are common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis (salmonellosis) often associated with the consumption of poultry products. The control of Salmonella in broiler chickens is difficult because colonized birds may carry this pathogen undetected into the slaughterhouse and cause meat contamination. Poultry vaccines can mitigate colonization, and one promising production method is via plants. Iron is an essential nutrient for Salmonella; therefore, our goal was to exploit iron uptake systems as vaccine targets that could starve this pathogen of iron and thus
