Hydrodynamic Constraints of Suction Feeding in Low Reynolds Numbers, and the Critical Period of Larval Fishes.

Larval fishes suffer prodigious mortality rates, eliminating 99% of the cohort within a few days after their first feeding. Hjort (1914) famously attributed this "critical period" of low survival to larval inability to obtain sufficient food. We discuss recent experimental and modeling work, suggesting that the viscous hydrodynamic regime have marked effects on the mechanism of suction feeding in larval fish. As larvae grow, the size of the gape and associated volume of the mouth increase. At the same time, larvae swim faster and can generate faster suction flows, thus transiting to a hydrodyn

Jaw and hyolingual movements during prey transport in varanid lizards: effects of prey type.

The ability to modulate feeding kinematics in response to prey items with different functional properties is likely a prerequisite for most organisms that feed on a variety of food items. Variation in prey properties is expected to reveal variation in feeding function and the functional role of the different phases in a transport cycle. Here we describe the kinematics of prey transport of two varanid species, Varanus niloticus and Varanus ornatus. These species were selected for analysis because of their highly specialised hyolingual system and food transport mechanism (inertial food transport

The acoustic advantage of hunting at low heights above water: behavioural experiments on the European 'trawling' bats Myotis capaccinii, M. dasycneme and M. daubentonii.

We have demonstrated in behavioural experiments that success in capturing prey from surfaces in 'trawling Myotis' (Leuconoë-type) depends on the acoustic properties of the surface on which the prey is presented. Two types of surface structure were ensonified with artificial bat signals to probe their acoustic characteristics. We have shown that perception of prey by echolocation is easier if the prey is presented on a smooth surface (such as calm water) than if it is presented on a structured surface (such as vegetation or the ground). This is because the smooth surface reflects a much lower l

Self-serving punishment of a common enemy creates a public good in reef fishes.

A key challenge for evolutionary biologists is to determine conditions under which individuals benefit from a contribution to public goods [1, 2]. For humans, it has been observed that punishment of free riders may promote contributions [3, 4], but the conditions that lead to stable cooperation based on punishment remain hotly debated [5-8]. Here we present empirical evidence that public goods may emerge as a by-product of self-serving punishment in interactions between coral reef fishes and parasitic saber-tooth blennies that stealthily attack their fish victims from behind to take a bite [9]

[The effect on other individual presentations of the goldfish by FG7142 injection].

To research the emotional effects on goldfish shoaling behavior, the change in time spent by the stimulus shoal sizes (0, 1, 2, and 5) was investigated. Consequently, as for shoaling behavior, a difference was seen only in the presence of a shoal, independent of size. The experimental goldfish were then injected with beta-carboline (FG7142, N-Methyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxyamide at 0.1, 1, 2, or 4 mg/kg) or the vehicle and exposed to the stimulus fish (1). In the beta-carboline group with the 1 and 2 mg/kg dose, the time spent within 10 cm of the stimulus fish increased compared with the vehic

A mechanistic understanding of collective escape in starling flocks.

Large flocks of European starlings change shape, size, and internal structure continuously and rapidly when hunted by aerial predators. How their diverse patterns of collective escape emerge is still unknown. Here, we disentangle the collective behavior of starlings combining video footage of flocks pursued by a robotic predator and a data-driven 3-dimentional agent-based model. In vivo, we show that flock members often differ in their evasive maneuvers and that several collective patterns arise simultaneously across a flock. In silica, we identify individual-level rules that lead to dynamics

Offensive and Defensive Exploitation of Ants by Termitophagous Spiders (Araneae: Zodariidae).

Myrmecophagy is one of the most common types of dietary specialization among predators. It can include exploitation of ants, termites, or both. Although ants and termites share a few traits, they are distantly related and possess different defensive mechanisms. Therefore, adaptations to ants and termites should differ, especially in arthropod predators of similar body size as their prey. We investigate offensive and defensive adaptations in Zodariidae spider genus Diores, reported to feed on termites. The ancestral state reconstruction of the diet favored termitophagy for the genus, but metaba

Are the effects of hunger stage-specific? A case study in an aphidophagous ladybird beetle.

Food availability is a fundamental factor determining an animal's potential fitness. Carry-over effects of food limitation from development to adulthood are known to influence reproduction, ageing, and tolerance to stress. We have examined the effect of stage-specific variation (before adult emergence or pre-emergence, post-emergence and post-mating) in food availability in Propylea dissecta (Mulsant). Larvae were reared separately on two different pre-emergence food regimes (abundant or restricted) until pupation. Newly emerged adults were further split into two groups and placed on abundant

Trophic niche, capture efficiency and venom profiles of six sympatric ant-eating spider species (Araneae: Zodariidae).

The arms race between specialist predators and their prey has resulted in the evolution of a variety of specific adaptations. In venomous predators, this can include venom composition, particularly if predators are specialized on dangerous prey. Here, we performed an integrative study using six species of highly specialized ant-eating spiders of the genus Zodarion to investigate their phylogeny, realized trophic niche, efficacy in the capture of various ant species and venom composition. Data on natural diet obtained by next-generation sequencing and field observations showed that the six Zoda

Changes in predator exposure, but not in diet, induce phenotypic plasticity in scorpion venom.

Animals embedded between trophic levels must simultaneously balance pressures to deter predators and acquire resources. Venomous animals may use venom toxins to mediate both pressures, and thus changes in this balance may alter the composition of venoms. Basic theory suggests that greater exposure to a predator should induce a larger proportion of defensive venom components relative to offensive venom components, while increases in arms races with prey will elicit the reverse. Alternatively, reducing the need for venom expenditure for food acquisition, for example because of an increase in sca

The brain and behavior of the tentacled snake.

Tentacled snakes (Erpeton tentaculatum) are aquatic predators that feed exclusively on fish. They have a unique pair of tentacles projecting from the face and an unusual J-shaped hunting posture. These features have been the subject of speculation for over a century. In a series of behavioral studies, tentacled snakes were found to exploit fish escape responses by startling fish toward their strike. This remarkable, deceptive behavior takes advantage of the stereotyped C-start escape response of fish. For some fish approach angles, snakes predicted future fish behavior and accurately struck at

Mouse Predation is Dependent on a Population of POU6F2-Positive Retinal Ganglion Cells.

The contribution of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) subtypes to visually guided behavior continues to be an active area of research. We identify POU6F2-expressing RGCs essential for binocular predatory behavior. The POU6F2 RGCs are ON-OFF direction-selective RGCs that are vulnerable to glaucomatous injury. In Pou6f2 knockout ( Pou6f2 -/- ) mice, there is a 12% loss of RGCs, and these cells are the POU6F2-expressing RGCs. Functionally, Pou6f2 -/- mice exhibited profound deficits in contrast sensitivity. In this study we found a deficit in the ability of Pou6f2 -/- mice to perform a binocularly dr

Dynamics and optimal harvesting of a fractional predator-prey system with fear and anti-predator mechanisms.

Wild prey are shaped by predators long before they are caught. Fear alone suppresses reproduction, physical refuges reduce exposure, and many species strike back directly at their attackers, imposing real costs on the hunter. To investigate the combined effects of these behavioral mechanisms, we develop a Caputo fractional-order predator-prey model incorporating fear-induced reproductive suppression, proportional prey refuge, active anti-predator retaliation, a Holling type II functional response, and nonlinear saturation harvesting. The fractional memory order accounts for hereditary effects

Effect of Artemisia dracunculus L. Water Extracts on Aphis fabae Scop. and Its Predators in Field Conditions.

Use of plant-based aqueous extracts offers a potentially simple and low-cost approach to pest control. However, their effectiveness under field conditions remains poorly recognised. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of aqueous extracts prepared from dried and fresh Artemisia dracunculus L. plant material (D-Es and F-Es, respectively) in controlling Aphis fabae Scop. in field conditions. D-Es were applied in concentrations of 2% (D2), 5% (D5) and 10% (D10) and F-Es in concentrations of 10% (F10), 20% (F20) and 30% (F30). A reduction in the A. fabae population was observed w

The Scent of Deception: Does the Hornet Clearwing Sesia apiformis Chemically Mimic Vespa crabro?

Avoiding attack requires harmless species to escape, prevent recognition as prey, or remain undetected. Clearwing moths display hymenopteran mimicry that may involve multiple sensory modalities-from visual and locomotor to acoustic cues. Here, we tested whether the morphological and acoustical resemblance of the hornet clearwing Sesia apiformis to the hornet Vespa crabro also extends to chemical traits by comparing their cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles. Compositional and quantitative analyses revealed no evidence of chemical mimicry between S. apiformis and V. crabro; instead, the moth ex

Fusion of the Basal Phalanges of Digit II in Accipitridae (Aves: Eagles, Hawks, and Kites): A Functional Trade-Off Between Rapid Force Transmission and Surface-Conforming Grasp.

Accipitridae (eagles, hawks, and kites) are raptorial birds whose anisodactyl feet combine support, perching, and prey capture. In several Accipitridae, the proximal and intermediate phalanges of the inner toe (digit II; phalanges II-1 and II-2) are fused completely or partly into a single functional unit. The character occurs in a restricted but ecologically heterogeneous set of kites and sea eagles and is absent from many other raptorial taxa. Its distribution is therefore not explained adequately by body size, broad diet or predation in itself. This synthesis interprets the fused condition

The hunter or the hunted? Inferring benthic meso-predator behavior from swim velocity data.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has increasingly focused on improving symptoms in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of oral pilocarpine in treating SS, synthesising the latest scientific evidence from randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the Science Citation Index for relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published up to November 2023. Cochrane is used to assess the quality of literature studies and to extract data from included articles. The main results were summari

Predation on sea turtles at sea: A multi-source synthesis and research perspectives.

Predation is a key ecological process shaping sea turtle populations, yet - unlike predation of eggs, hatchlings and adults on nesting beaches - its role at sea remains poorly quantified due to observational challenges. This study synthesizes multiple, rarely integrated data sources-including unpublished data-to examine global patterns of sea turtle predation at sea. Sources include field observations (turtles found stranded, nesting, admitted to rescue centers, or captured in-water for research), literature records, predator diet data, and non-conventional online sources (NCS; images and vide

The risk of thiamine deficiency in common eider ducklings increases when females consume large prey.

Episodic mass mortality due to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is a major threat to marine top-consumers worldwide. Recent reports have shown that thiamine deficiency can lead to high mortality rates of common eider (Somateria mollissima) ducklings in the Baltic population. It is unclear whether the drastic reduction in offspring recruitment is linked to the changes in egg thiamine levels. This would have an additional negative impact on the Baltic population of the common eider, which is mainly driven by increased predation pressure. As thiamine concentration decreases with the size of organ

Do shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus hunt dolphins actively?

Direct evidence of shark predation on cetaceans is scarce, making it difficult to differentiate between stomach contents that have been scavenged and actively hunted. This study reports the presence of dolphin (Tursiops aduncus and Stenella clymene) remains in the stomachs of three large shortfin makos Isurus oxyrinchus. Detailed analysis suggested active predation in at least one case, supported by premortem bite marks. This observation represents the first record of S. clymene in the diet of a shortfin mako. These findings highlight the opportunistic nature of shortfin mako, which may prey o
