In vivo and in silico models of Drosophila for Parkinson's disease.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as an important model organism to shed light on neurodegeneration. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, the cause of which is still mostly unclear. The long-term use of available PD drugs may have major side effects, and they only target the symptoms without providing any effective cure for the disease. Therefore, in vivo and in silico approaches are extensively used to model PD-like phenotypes in Drosophila and investigate cellular alterations underlying PD pathogenesis. In vivo models are particula

Liquid embolic agents-a practical overview.

Liquid embolic agents (LEAs) have expanded the therapeutic options for complex vascular and non-vascular conditions. Tailored clinical assessment with dedicated procedure planning is critical in the selection of the most appropriate embolic to ensure procedural success and minimise complications. The LEAs, which range from sclerosant agents to glues and copolymers all have specific physical characteristics. Sclerosant agents are mainly selected for symptomatic vein diseases such as varicoceles and low-flow venous and lymphatic malformations (VM and LM), usually requiring multiple treatment ses

Artificial Intelligence-Based Diagnostic Support System for Functional Dyspepsia Based on Brain Activity and Food Preference.

Background and aim Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are disorders where no organic clinical abnormalities are detected such as functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The brain activity of individuals with FD and IBS differs from that of healthy controls. Artificial intelligence can distinguish healthy controls from individuals with DGBI using several biomarkers. This study aimed to establish an artificial intelligence-based diagnostic support system using food preferences and brain activity in patients with DGBI. Methods ROME IV criteria were used to diagnose pa

The influence of garden spatial configuration on tourist behavior: A systematic review based on Space Syntax.

As composite spaces that integrate nature and culture, gardens are no longer regarded as merely static objects of visual appreciation in the context of urbanization, but have become essential venues for public cultural tourism and leisure. Consequently, the behavioral characteristics of tourists in gardens have attracted increasing academic attention. Space syntax, as a tool for analyzing the influence of spatial organization on human behavior, quantifies spatial configuration characteristics and can reveal how garden spatial configuration affects tourists' movement paths and spatial preferenc

E-FTMap: A Protein Structure Based Pharmacophore Identification Server for Guiding Fragment Expansion.

In fragment-based drug design (FBDD), libraries of low molecular weight compounds are screened against a receptor. Due to their size, fragment hits typically bind with weak affinities by forming a handful of highly efficient interactions with the receptor. Such fragment hits must be expanded into more potent lead compounds in order to achieve higher binding affinities. Approaches for expanding fragments to leads include growing-the iterative expansion of the scaffold, and merging-the linking of two fragment hits. In both cases the design can be facilitated by information on the ligand binding

Parents' preference for the inclusion of pediatric vaccines in the Chinese National Immunization Program: A discrete choice experiment.

The National Immunization Program (NIP) has significantly improved public health in China. However, current NIP coverage does not fully meet China's disease prevention needs. Some pediatric vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and widely used in other countries are not included. Currently, public participation can provide valuable insights for prioritizing vaccine inclusion in the NIP. This study aims to construct a prioritization model for evaluating pediatric vaccines that could be incorporated into the NIP based on Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) and Swing Weighting

Does copper contamination change thermotaxis of the soil arthropod Folsomia candida (Collembola)?

Behavioural thermoregulation (thermotaxis) is essential for soil invertebrates to evade thermal extremes in terrestrial environments. Extensive and continuous use of copper (Cu) based products has led to elevated Cu concentration in soils across the globe and in some areas reaching concentrations that are hazardous to soil invertebrates. We hypothesised that environmental stressors, for example, exposure to heavy metals may compromise the adaptive behavioural thermoregulation of organisms, but very little is known of such interactions. In this study, we chose Cu as a model toxicant and investi

Contrasting Volatilomes of Livestock Dung Drive Preference of the Dung Beetle Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Volatile cues can play a significant role in the location and discrimination of food resources by insects. Dung beetles have been reported to discriminate among dung types produced by different species, thereby exhibiting behavioral preferences. However, the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dung localization and preference remains largely unexplored in dung beetles. Here we performed several studies: firstly, cage olfactometer bioassays were performed to evaluate the behavioral responses of Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) to VOCs emanating from fresh horse, sheep, and cattle

Impact of immunosuppressive drugs on efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for suppressing renal fibrosis.

Preemptive regenerative medicine using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may provide a novel therapeutic approach to prevent the progression from organ damage to organ failure. Although immunosuppressive drugs are often used in patients with organ disorder, their impact on MSC therapy remains unclear. We investigated the effects of immunosuppressive drugs on the therapeutic efficacy of MSCs. We created unilateral ureteral obstruction models, as a well-established model of renal fibrosis, a preliminary stage of organ failure. Three immunosuppressive drugs (methylprednisolone, cyclosporine, and cycl

Update to U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use: Self-Administration of Subcutaneous Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate.

U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR), adapted by CDC from global guidance developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), provides evidence-based guidance on contraceptive use for U.S. health care providers (1). During January-February, 2021, CDC evaluated the 2019 WHO recommendation on self-administered subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC) (2). CDC adopted the WHO recommendation on the basis of moderate-certainty evidence that self-administered DMPA-SC is safe and effective, and has higher continuation rates compared with provider-admin

Reproductive psychiatric advance directives: promoting autonomy for perinatal people with serious mental illness diagnoses.

People with serious mental illness (SMI) diagnoses who become pregnant are particularly vulnerable to symptom recurrence and resulting potential lack of decision-making capacity (Taylor et al. J Psychiatr Res 104:100-107, 2018; Bagadia et al. Int J Soc Psychiatry 66:792-798, 2020). In these situations, prenatal and behavioral health providers have little legally viable guidance on what medical and/or psychiatric care the patient desires (Aneja and Arora Indian J Med Ethics V:133-139, 2020). We created a "Reproductive Psychiatric Advance Directive (PAD)," grounded in Reproductive Justice princi

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) conference on kernicterus: a population perspective on prevention of kernicterus.

This paper reviews barriers to the prevention of kernicterus. Reports of kernicterus cases persist. We do not know why kernicterus continues to occur or how best to prevent it. We need evidence for key recommendations that make clinical guidelines usable by practitioners caring for newborns, especially for practitioners providing ambulatory care in the first week of life. Data on prevalence and incidence, mortality and morbidity are essential for launching a kernicterus public health campaign. Modeling cost-effectiveness requires data on costs and benefits of alternative strategies for managin

Clinical perspectives on sampling and processing approaches for the management of infection in diabetic foot ulceration: A qualitative study.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often become infected and are treated with antimicrobials, with samples collected to inform care. Swab samples are easier than tissue sampling but report fewer organisms. Compared with culture and sensitivity (C&S) methods, molecular microbiology identifies more organisms. Clinician perspectives on sampling and processing are unknown. We explored clinician perspectives on DFU sampling-tissue samples/wound swabs-and on processing techniques, culture and sensitivity or molecular techniques. The latter provides information on organisms which have not survived transport
