Pressure Points: A Scoping Review of Intracranial Pressure and Mean Arterial Pressure Measurement and Reporting Practices in Neurocritical Care.

Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) is a cornerstone of neurocritical care, but the literature shows substantial heterogeneity in how its components-intracranial pressure (ICP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP)-are reported. We conducted a scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and PRISMA-ScR to map this variability. Structured searches in PubMed and Scopus (January 1997 to May 2026) identified 350 eligible original clinical studies. For each study, we extracted whether the ICP measurement method, ICP device, ICP zero reference, MAP measurement method, and arterial line

Pressure-time product during continuous positive airway pressure, pressure support ventilation, and T-piece during weaning from mechanical ventilation.

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), pressure support ventilation (PS), and T-piece on the pressure-time product (PTP) during weaning from mechanical ventilation. The PTP is an estimate of the metabolic work or oxygen consumption of the respiratory muscles. We studied 10 intubated patients recovering from acute respiratory failure of various etiologies. A modified continuous flow (flow-by) CPAP of 0 and 5 cm H2O (CPAP-0 and CPAP-5, respectively), PS of 5 cm H2O (PS-5), and T-piece were applied in random order for 30 min each. In

[Gas-diffusion induced pressure kinetics in low pressure cuffs. Continuous pressure measurement in vivo and in vitro (author's transl)].

The main cause for the rise in cuff-pressure during anesthesia is the diffusion of nitrous oxide into the tube cuff. Gas-diffusion induced pressure changes in low pressure-high volume cuffs are registered continuously. Exposure of an air-filled cuff into an anaesthetic gas atmosphere in vitro shows, that there is an increase in cuff-pressure up to 150 mm Hg within 8 hours. This pressure-plateau remains for several hours. In intubated patients cuff-pressure increases even more. During anesthesia lasting 4--5 hours we recorded pressures up to 150 mm Hg, too. To prevent these high pressures we re

The influence of spinal venous blood pressure on cerebrospinal fluid pressure.

In Alligator mississippiensis the spinal dura is surrounded by a venous sinus; pressure waves can propagate in the spinal venous blood, and these spinal venous pressures can be transmitted to the spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This study was designed to explore pressure transfer between the spinal venous blood and the spinal CSF. At rest the cardiac-related CSF pulsations are attenuated and delayed, while the ventilatory-related pulsations are amplified as they move from the spinal venous blood to the spinal CSF. Orthostatic gradients resulted in significant alterations of both cardiac- and

The Influence of Translaminar Pressure Gradient and Intracranial Pressure in Glaucoma: A Review.

The current evidence associating intracranial pressure (ICP) with glaucoma, the translaminar pressure gradient hypothesis, and anatomic factors likely affecting the relationship between ICP and retrolaminar tissue pressure including the size of the optic canal and lamina cribrosa thickness are reviewed. In addition, the evidence of diurnal and positional variation on the translaminar pressure gradient, effects of glaucoma medications, evidence of ICP helping to maintain cerebrospinal fluid flow in the optic nerve to prevent glaucomatous damage, and the effect of intraocular pressure variation

Effect of shoe modifications on center of pressure and in-shoe plantar pressures.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of footwear modification on patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Two analyses, the center of pressure and the in-shoe plantar pressures, were studied with the help of healthy volunteers so that the effect of shoe modifications could be assessed. The ground force under the sole of the shoe was measured while the subjects were walking, and the plantar pressure at the foot-insole interface and its distribution were measured while the subjects were in both the standing and walking positions, wearing the trial shoes. The trial shoes had thre

Is urinary bladder pressure a sensitive indicator of intra-abdominal pressure?

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: The accuracy of transurethral bladder catheter pressure in reflecting intra-abdominal pressure is well defined in experimental studies and case reports but not in controlled clinical trials. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We compared bladder pressure with insufflator pressure during laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 40 patients. Measurements were made at four pressure levels of the insufflator: 0, 5, 10 and 15 mmHg. RESULTS: When the insufflator displayed 0, 5, 10, and 15 mmHg (0, 6.8, 13.6 and 20.4 cmH2O), and the mean bladder pressures measured 2.5 +/- 1.4, 7.3 +/- 1.5, 12.

The influence of elevated intraocular pressure on vascular pressures in the cat retina.

PURPOSE: Elevated intraocular pressure is known to reduce retinal blood flow, although the effect of intraocular pressure on retinal vascular pressures is unknown. Direct measurements of intravascular pressures were taken in the cat retina at various intraocular pressures. METHODS: Micropipettes of 2- to 3-microns tip diameter were used in conjunction with a servonull pressure-measuring system to determine retinal intravascular pressures in supine anesthetized cats. Pressures in large (80 to 120 microns diameter) vessels near the optic disc were measured over a wide range of intraocular press

Distension pressure on subserosal and mesenteric lymph pressures of rat jejunum.

Lymph pressure (Pl) in the subserosal lymphatics and mesenteric lymphatics was determined in the jejunum at various intraluminal distension pressures (DP). Pl in the subserosal lymphatics was approximately equal to DP, in the range of 3-100 mmHg, whether the intestine was in the basal state or during water absorption. At a DP of 0 mmHg, Pl was 1.5 +/- 0.1 mmHg. When DP was 3, 10, 20, 40, 70, or 100 mmHg, Pl was 2.9 +/- 0.2, 11 +/- 1, 23 +/- 1, 43 +/- 1, 71 +/- 2, or 102 +/- 2 mmHg, respectively. From these findings and other considerations it is inferred that Pl in the subserosal lymphatics co

Reproducibility of blood pressure variability assessed by home blood pressure monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Although blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) derived from home BP monitoring (HBPM) is a recognized cardiovascular risk marker, limited data on its reproducibility hinder its clinical application. This study aimed to address this gap. METHODS: We compared HBPM-derived BPV at two time points using three metrics [standard deviation (SDVar), coefficient of variation (CoV), and variability independent of the mean (VIM)] among 495 individuals not using antihypertensive medications (No-AH) (median time-span between HBPM exams = 392 [308-519] days) and 588 individuals using antihyperten

Performing Under Pressure: Maintenance of Donor Lung Pressure During Cabin Depressurization.

INTRODUCTION: Maintenance of donor lung pressure is recommended to maintain inflation pressures of 12-15 mm Hg. This is particularly important given graft transportation in aircraft, due to the inevitable pressure changes. CASE: We describe a case of a donor lung preservation system which maintained proper airway pressure during sudden cabin pressure loss requiring emergent landing. DISCUSSION: The donor lungs were implanted without complication. Post-transplant course was notable for primary graft dysfunction (PGD) grade 1 at 24 hours, grade 2 at 48 hours, and grade 1 at 72 hours. At 3 mont

Displacement-pressure biparametrically regulated softness sensory system for intraocular pressure monitoring.

High intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the high-risk pathogenic factors of glaucoma. Existing methods of IOP measurement are based on the direct interaction with the cornea. Commercial ophthalmic tonometers based on snapshot measurements are expensive, bulky, and their operation requires trained personnel. Theranostic contact lenses are easy to use, but they may block vision and cause infection. Here, we report a sensory system for IOP assessment that uses a soft indentor with two asymmetrically deployed iontronic flexible pressure sensors to interact with the eyelid-eyeball in an eye-close

Lower Breakpoint of Intracranial Amplitude-Pressure Relationship in Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

The relationship between intracranial pulse amplitude (AMP) and mean intracranial pressure (ICP) has been previously described. Generally, AMP increases proportionally to rises in ICP. However, at low ICP a lower breakpoint (LB) of amplitude-pressure relationship can be observed, below which pulse amplitude stays constant when ICP varies. Theoretically, below this breakpoint, the pressure-volume relationship is linear (good compensatory reserve, brain compliance stays constant); above the breakpoint, it is exponential (brain compliance decreases with rising ICP).Infusion tests performed in 169

Blood Pressure Goals: Is Cerebral Saturation the New Mean Arterial Pressure?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article was to correlate hypotension and cerebral saturation from near-infrared spectroscopy (cNIRS) in neonates on dopamine. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of neonates receiving dopamine between August 2018 and 2019 was performed. Hypotension thresholds included mean arterial pressure (MAP) of postmenstrual age (PMA) ± 5 and 30 mm Hg and gestational age (GA) ± 5 mm Hg. Time below threshold MAP was compared with time with cerebral hypoxia (cNIRS <55%). RESULTS: Hypotension occurred 6 to 33% of the time on dopamine in 59 cases. Hypotension did not correlat
