Strategies in the design of preventive programs.

Dental caries is mostly recorded at the cavity level only. A reduced mean number of cavities in new age cohorts is often thought of as a result of prevention of the disease, dental caries. However, what is measured is rather our success in controlling the disease in such a way that prevalence of its more severe manifestations (cavities) can be reduced in children. Caries lesions and periodontal breakdown are cumulative with age and progress steadily in all populations. Thus, caries is the predominant reason for tooth loss in almost all age groups. The low prevalence and skewed distribution of

Oral disease beliefs, behaviors, and health status of Korean-Americans.

Previous research with other ethnic minorities has shown that culture and age cohort, as well as language and economic limitations, act as barriers to obtaining dental care and maintaining good oral health. This study compared self-reported oral health attitudes, self-efficacy, and dental practices of 20 younger and 23 elderly Korean-Americans. Oral assessments were also conducted to determine plaque and gingival status, and root and coronal caries. Significant differences emerged in health self-efficacy (P less than .01) and preventive health orientation (P less than .002). Elderly had fewer

Antibiotic prophylaxis in dentistry: an update.

Antibiotics are used in dentistry to treat an existing infection therapeutically or to prevent an infection prophylactically. To prevent a perioperative infection (primary prophylaxis), prophylactic antibiotics may be administered when a surgical device, such as a prosthetic cardiac valve, is placed. They also may be administered to patients who have an existing medical condition or have received a previously placed device to reduce the risk of infection from a bacteremia (secondary prophylaxis). Although it is common to prescribe secondary prophylaxis for many dental conditions, there is a ge
