A Clinical Pathway to Standardize Care of Children With Delirium in Pediatric Inpatient Settings.

Pediatric delirium is an important comorbidity of medical illness in inpatient pediatric care that has lacked a consistent approach for detection and management. A clinical pathway (CP) was developed to address this need. Pediatric delirium contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality, and costs of inpatient care of medically ill children and adolescents. Screening for delirium in hospital settings with validated tools is feasible and effective in reducing delirium and improving outcomes; however, multidisciplinary coordination is required for implementation. The workgroup, composed of in

Prevalence of verbal and physical workplace violence against nurses in psychiatric hospitals in China.

OBJECTIVE: Workplace violence (WPV) is common in mental health services in China, but its multi-center prevalence measured using standardized rating scales has rarely been reported. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of verbal and physical violence against nurses working in psychiatric hospitals and examine its independent socio-demographic correlates in China. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 11 major psychiatric hospitals in China using a 9-item self-reported workplace violence scale. RESULTS: A total of 1906 psychiatric nurses were recruited to participate in

Attitudes towards bipolar disorder and predictive genetic testing among patients and providers.

Attitudes about bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder) and genetic testing were investigated. Three groups of subjects were surveyed including members of a manic depressive support group, medical students, and psychiatry residents. The questionnaire was intended to elicit impressions and attitudes about bipolar disorder (BP) from mental health consumers and health care providers with varying levels of personal and professional familiarity with the disorder. Attitudes towards prenatal testing and pregnancy termination were also assessed. The intention hypothetically to terminate a pregnan

Palliative psychiatry through the eyes of psychiatric nurses in a country where palliative psychiatry has not yet emerged: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Palliative psychiatry is an approach that aims to prevent and/or alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life of patients and their families through timely assessment and treatment when faced with physical, psychological, social, and spiritual problems associated with serious life-threatening mental illness. However, the need for psychiatric palliative care for individuals with serious mental illness has remained in the background and only became possible in the early 21st century. Therefore, it is essential that nurses, one of the most important actors of patient-centered c

[Oswald Bumke (1877-1950)-silence as resistance?].

In 1924 Oswald Bumke was appointed as Emil Kraepelins successor to the Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Munich. After 1933 he was a promoting member of the SS and the National Socialist Teachers Federation but he was never a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). In 1933 he assumed the presidency of the Society of German Neurologists but only 2 years later he withdrew from the executive board because of scientific and personal differences with Ernst Rüdin, the new "strong man" of the merged Society of German Neurologists and Psychiatrists. After the end of WWII

Defining dyslexia - a commentary on Carroll et al. (2025).

Carroll et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2025, 66, 1065) conducted a Delphi study, which synthesized responses across a range of participants to arrive at a consensus definition of dyslexia. The study contributes to understanding important considerations in this field from the perspective of a panel of stakeholders. In this article, we make the case for an alternative approach to defining and ultimately identifying dyslexia. Our proposed definition is developed through a critical examination of issues raised in the Delphi study and of approaches that emphasize cognitive proc

Improving the outcome in leukemia patients by controlling subthreshold depression and cancer-related fatigue.

Patients with leukemia often suffer from the combined effects of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and subthreshold depression, which mutually exacerbate each other in a vicious cycle. In this editorial, we comment on the article by Liu et al, published in the World Journal of Psychiatry. We further elucidate the profound impact of subthreshold depressive symptoms on the experience of CRF and complications in patients with leukemia. This editorial highlights the importance of early identification and treatment of subclinical depression, and advocates for a multidisciplinary and integrated treatment

From Mushrooms to Myolysis: A Case of Rhabdo in Psilocybin-Induced Mood and Psychotic Disorder.

The involvement of certain recreational drugs, namely, hallucinogens, in the development of hyperactive syndromes is well known, but not well studied. In this report, we expand on this relationship by documenting the development of substance-induced psychosis in a young patient who used a large amount of psilocybin and developed symptoms of a first psychotic and manic episode, complicated by violent behavior and rhabdomyolysis. We further evaluate the association between psilocybin use and rhabdomyolysis and explore this understudied phenomenon and differentiate it from the diagnoses of other

The use of lithium in mixed states.

Lithium is a unique drug. In more than 60 years of observation, it showed its multiple important clinical properties in treating mania, stabilizing mood alterations, preventing suicide and protecting from neurodegeneration. It was also the most extensively studied drug in psychiatry. Nevertheless, it is generally underprescribed. Specifically, lithium is virtually not considered in the treatment of patients affected by mixed affective states. Lithium is not suggested for the acute treatment of mixed affective states and is considered to be less effective than other mood stabilizers in the long

NMDAR (N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor) encephalitis in a patient with MS (multiple sclerosis): a rare and challenging case.

We present a rare case of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis in a 41-year-old Caucasian woman, who initially presented with prominent neuropsychiatric symptoms on the background of pre-existing multiple sclerosis. Here, the authors navigate the muddy water between neurology and psychiatry, describing the caveats of antibody testing with a misdiagnosed case of acute and transient psychotic episode. NMDAR encephalitis in MS is a rare condition, which can be easily confused with a new onset psychotic episode. This case report can be helpful in recognition and diagnosis of this rar

Violence Prevention Community Meeting Conducted on Your Unit.

The Violence Prevention Community Meeting (VPCM) is to reduce violence on inpatient psychiatry units, and has been written about elsewhere. The purpose of this article is to explain how other nurses can implement a similar meeting in their work setting. Details of different aspects of the VPCM are provided including the purpose, administrative support role of patients and staff, and the content and process of the VPCM. The reader is presented with several different scenarios about assault. The VPCM is an innovative, group-based treatment, administered by nursing staff members. Goals of the VPC

Spiritual dimension in the dynamic relationship with the "helping professions".

The attention given to the spiritual dimension in the "helping professions" practice represents a major step for a coherent approach toward the ethical aspects in the resolving individual and familial conflicts; furthermore they can be used as a key in understanding dysfunctional relationship. Psychiatry interest for religion and mysticism must be considered within a wider framework of cultural changes of our society, from which neither religion, understood as a system of faith, nor medicine, as an answer to human suffering could remain indifferent. The evaluation of this aspect prevents the o

An approach to evaluating competence in assessing and managing violence risk.

OBJECTIVE: The authors developed and evaluated a tool for assessing competency in violence risk assessment and management. METHODS: The Competency Assessment Instrument for Violence Risk (CAI-V) was based on the literature on violence risk assessment, which was complemented by feedback from faculty focus groups. In an objective structured clinical examination, 31 faculty observers used the CAI-V to rate the performance of 31 learners' (26 psychiatry residents and five psychology interns) risk assessments of standardized (simulated) patients. In an interrater reliability study, six faculty mem

Risk factors for adolescent sex offender recidivism: evaluation of predictive factors and comparison of three groups based upon victim type.

This study investigated differences in recidivism risk factors and traits associated with psychopathy among 3 groups of male adolescent sexual offenders (N=156): offenders against children, offenders against peers or adults, and mixed type offenders. Furthermore, those same variables were examined for their association with sexual and nonsexual recidivism and the 3 groups were compared for differences in rates of recidivism. Based upon both juvenile and adult recidivism data, 6.4% of the sample reoffended sexually and 30.1% reoffended nonsexually. Retrospective risk assessments were completed

Precision medicine in mental health: applications, challenges, and recommendations.

Mental disorders represent a major and growing public health challenge in Europe and worldwide, characterised by marked clinical, biological, and functional heterogeneity, that limits the effectiveness of current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. In recent years, advances in precision medicine have initiated a paradigm shift in psychiatry, offering new opportunities to improve prevention, prediction, diagnosis, treatment selection, and long-term management by integrating biological, psychological, social, and environmental information. This EPA Guidance Paper provides an overview of the cu

Headache psychiatry: A structured narrative review and integrative framework.

Headache disorders involve complex interactions between neurobiological, psychiatric, behavioral, and social factors. Despite robust evidence of psychiatric comorbidity and psychosocial influences, these dimensions remain inadequately integrated into clinical practice and conceptual models. This review synthesizes evidence linking psychiatric factors with headache disorders and proposes Headache Psychiatry as a unified, integrative framework, operationalized through the Psychocephalology model. We conducted a structured narrative review across PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (1990-2025),

A historical narrative of mental health and war: from antiquity to the twenty-first century.

Warfare has repeatedly reshaped psychiatry, compelling societies to confront the psychological, moral, and social consequences of organised violence. This review traces how ideas about war-related mental disorders have evolved from antiquity to today. Conditions once seen as moral weakness or imbalance (such as melancholia, nostalgia, and 'soldier's heart') were reinterpreted over time through medical and social change, leading to modern concepts like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury. While clinical attention historically centred on soldiers, modern conflicts demonstrate

The potentiality of telepsychiatry using a teleoperated robot for a patient with alcohol abuse on an isolated island.

BACKGROUND: Providing medical care on isolated islands can be challenging in several ways. Telepsychiatry can potentially offer a solution for accessible psychiatric services on isolated islands. When video conferencing is used in telepsychiatry, the psychiatry specialist, who is remotely located, may find it difficult to establish trust. To address this, we developed a teleoperated robot system termed "Sota 100," which is equipped to convey various elements of nonverbal communication, such as eye contact, in remote settings. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we introduce the case of a patie

Adolescent clinical populations and associations between trauma and behavioral and emotional problems.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma exposure is common during childhood and adolescence and is associated with youth emotional and behavioral problems. The present study adds to the current literature on trauma exposure among adolescent clinical populations by examining the association between trauma exposure and adolescent self-report of emotional and behavioral problems broadly, including internalizing and externalizing symptoms, in addition to the trauma-specific symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: This study included 94 female (64%) and male (36%) adolescents, ages 13-19, representing
