Reduced Cerebral Blood Flow in the Visual Cortex and Its Correlation With Glaucomatous Structural Damage to the Retina in Patients With Mild to Moderate Primary Open-angle Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Altered ocular and cerebral vascular autoregulation and vasoreactivity have been demonstrated in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). In the present study, we investigated the correlations between reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF) in early and higher-tier visual cortical areas and glaucomatous changes in the retinas of patients with mild to moderate POAG. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 3-dimensional pseudocontinuous arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging at 3 T was performed in 20 normal controls and 15 mild to moderate POAG patients. Regions of interest were selected

Differential Influence of the Dorsal Premotor and Primary Somatosensory Cortex on Corticospinal Excitability during Kinesthetic and Visual Motor Imagery: A Low-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Study.

Consistent evidence suggests that motor imagery involves the activation of several sensorimotor areas also involved during action execution, including the dorsal premotor cortex (dPMC) and the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). However, it is still unclear whether their involvement is specific for either kinesthetic or visual imagery or whether they contribute to motor activation for both modalities. Although sensorial experience during motor imagery is often multimodal, identifying the modality exerting greater facilitation of the motor system may allow optimizing the functional outcomes of r

Immediate and Long-Term Effects of Different Montages of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Over Primary Visual Cortex in Patients With Chronic Migraine: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the immediate and long-term therapeutic efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) using two distinct montages of anodal and cathodal electrical stimulation over the primary visual cortex compared with a sham tDCS in patients with chronic migraines. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 72 eligible patients with resistant chronic migraine were randomly assigned to one of three groups, receiving anodal or cathodal (2 mA for 20 min), or sham tDCS (0.5 mA for 30 s), over the pain-dominant side of the primary visual cortex. Callosal agenesis and absence of primary visual cortex induced by prenatal X rays impair navigation's strategy and learning in tasks involving visuo-spatial working but not reference memory in mice.

This study was designed for the identification of possible and distinct abilities for behavioral recovery after prenatal cerebral damage. We adopted an interesting tool for promotion of cell's death. Due to the fact that neuroblastic cells and early postmitotic neurons on the beginning of differentiation are particularly sensible for the promotion of apoptosis, we used a low whole-body dose of X radiation on pregnant female mice on E16 (sixteenth gestational day) to promote damage on specific cerebral areas of the progeny, given that the pattern of cerebral neurogenesis is not homogeneous. Improved observer dependent perception of weak edges when scanning an image in real time indicated by introducing 1/f noise into the primary visual cortex V1. Theory and experimental support.

We present results of a new process for generating 1/f type noise sequences and introducing the noise in the primary visual cortex which then enables improved perception of weak edges when an observer is scanning a complex image in real time to detect detail such as in mammogram reading sessions. It can be explained by an adaptation of information theory for functional rather than previous task-based methods for formulating processes for edge formation in early vision. This is enabled from a two "species" classification of the interaction of opposing on-centre and off-centre neuron processes.

Blindsight or weirdsight?

We welcome Sepe et al'.s careful study of the visual capacities of the macaque in the early period that follows a lesion to primary visual cortex. Blindsight is a central phenomenon in the study of consciousness, for its existence suggests the possibility of unconscious vision, an inference that remains controversial. Here, we suggest that damage to visual cortex may produce not just less vision, but rather a different kind of visual engagement with the environment. Fine-grained saccade phenotyping offers clues not only to how much function remains, but to how post-lesional vision is different

Decreased coherence in the model of the dorsal visual pathway associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Decreased coherence in electroencephalogram (EEG) has been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) experimentally, which could be considered as a typical electrophysiological characteristic in AD. This work aimed to investigate the effect of AD on coherence in the dorsal visual pathway by the technique of neurocomputation. Firstly, according to the hierarchical organization of the cerebral cortex and the information flows of the dorsal visual pathway, a more physiologically plausible neural mass model including cortical areas v1, v2, and v5 was established in the dorsal visual pathway. The three

Look before you leap? Grasping blindsight.

Blindsight is an intriguing phenomenon, in which individuals with damage to the primary visual cortex can adequately respond to visual targets, even though they insist on little or absent awareness of their visual experience. Several questions arise in this context: (i) Is awareness a necessary prerequisite for adaptive and flexible behavior? (ii) Does the phenomenon of blindsight actually exist, or is it a wordplay and rather a matter of residual vision or a peculiar form of seeing? (iii) Do we possess suitable tools for capturing reliable subjective reports and behavioral responses? This is

Functional organization and natural scene responses across mouse visual cortical areas revealed with encoding manifolds.

A challenge in sensory neuroscience is understanding how populations of neurons operate in concert to represent diverse stimuli. To meet this challenge, we have created "encoding manifolds" that reveal the overall responses of brain areas to diverse stimuli and organize individual neurons in stimulus-response coordinates according to their selectivity and response dynamics. Here we use encoding manifolds to compare the population-level encoding of primary visual cortex (VISp) with that of five higher visual areas (VISam, VISal, VISpm, VISlm, and VISrl), using data from the Allen Institute Visu

[Study on the regulatory effect of low intensity retinal ultrasound stimulation on the neural activity of visual cortex].

Low-intensity ultrasound stimulation of the retina has the ability to modulate neural activity in the primary visual cortex (V1), however, it is currently unclear how different intensities and durations of ultrasonic stimulation of the retina modulate neural activity in V1. In this paper, we recorded local field potential (LFP) signals in the V1 brain region of mice under different ultrasound intensities and different stimulation times. The amplitude of LFP corresponding to 1 s before ultrasound stimulation to 2 s after stimulation (-1-2 s) was analyzed, including the power and sample entropy

Leading the way: collicular contributions to blindsight.

In this issue, Sepe et al. (2026) show that after only 2 weeks' recovery from a unilateral lesion of primary visual cortex, macaques show evidence that they can make saccades towards targets in the contralesional visual field when target onset is cued. We propose that the superior colliculus is a strong candidate for the generation of these spared visual responses. We go on to suggest that measuring other components of the orienting response, namely activity in the neck and limb muscles during saccades or pointing movements, could provide confirmatory evidence for a collicular contribution to

Is there a neural common factor for visual illusions?

It has been reported that the surface area of the human primary visual cortex predicts the susceptibility to several spatial contextual illusions. Yet, contrary to common belief, illusions correlate only weakly at the perceptual level, raising the question of how they can correlate with a neural measure like V1 surface area. In addition, mounting evidence suggests that there is substantial interindividual variability not only in neural function and anatomy but also in the mapping between the two, which further challenges the findings of a neural common factor for illusions. In light of these c

Early-stage recovery after visual cortical damage for blindsight.

It is well known that humans and nonhuman primates can retain residual visuomotor abilities following chronic damage to the primary visual cortex (V1), a phenomenon known as blindsight. Sepe et al. investigated the behavior of monkeys with unilateral V1 lesions during a visually guided saccade task in the early post-lesion stage. Their study revealed that recovery initially manifests as atypical behavior, characterized by less accurate saccade trajectories and longer reaction times, while responses were nonetheless reliably triggered by the visual presentation of targets within the scotoma. A biophysical model linking cortical scalar potentials and polarization waves to slow traveling activity in vision.

Recent experimental studies indicate that visual cognition is accompanied by slowly propagating biophysical traveling waves in cortical tissue. Here, we propose that polarization waves within the visual cortex provide the biophysical basis for the observed slowly propagating traveling waves. For this, we first compute the propagation speed of scalar potential fields generated by impressed ionic currents in primary visual cortex using a theoretically derived telegraph-type model equation. On the basis of the linear convolution framework, we then show that the scalar potential field [Formula: se

Running modulates primate and rodent visual cortex differently.

When mice run, activity in their primary visual cortex (V1) is strongly modulated. This observation has altered conceptions of a brain region assumed to be a passive image processor. Extensive work has followed to dissect the circuits and functions of running-correlated modulation. However, it remains unclear whether visual processing in primates might similarly change during locomotion. We therefore measured V1 activity in marmosets while they viewed stimuli on a treadmill. In contrast to mouse, running-correlated modulations of marmoset V1 were small and tended to be slightly suppressive. Po

Projections between visual cortex and pulvinar in the rat.

The extrageniculate visual pathway, which carries visual information from the retina through the superficial layers of the superior colliculus and the pulvinar, is poorly understood. The pulvinar is thought to modulate information flow between cortical areas, and has been implicated in cognitive tasks like directing visually guided actions. In order to better understand the underlying circuitry, we performed retrograde injections of modified rabies virus in the visual cortex and pulvinar of the Long-Evans rat. We found a relatively small population of cells projecting to primary visual cortex

Ultrasound Modulation of Visual Circuits in Mice Independent of Auditory Confound.

Despite its growing potential as a noninvasive neuromodulation technology, the fundamental biophysical mechanism of focused ultrasound neuromodulation (FUN) remains elusive. Progress has been hampered by a persistent auditory confound, making it difficult to isolate the direct mechanical effects on neural circuits. To overcome this barrier, we employed two-photon calcium imaging (2PCI) in the primary visual cortex (V1) of deafened mice. Here, this study identifies a sparse (<1.5%) and spatially distributed population of neurons that is robustly and directly activated by ultrasound in a pressur
