Decomposing the late positive potential to cannabis cues in regular cannabis users: A temporal-spatial principal component analysis.

Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is increasing in the United States, yet, specific neural mechanisms of CUD are not well understood. Disordered substance use is characterized by heightened drug cue incentive salience, which can be measured using the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential (ERP) evoked by motivationally significant stimuli. The drug cue LPP is typically quantified by averaging the slow wave's scalp-recorded amplitude across its entire time course, which may obscure distinct underlying factors with differential predictive validity; however, no study to date has exam

Multi-step phase aberration compensation method based on optimal principal component analysis and subsampling for digital holographic microscopy.

Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is a well-known powerful technique allowing measurement of the spatial distributions of both the amplitude and phase produced by a transparent sample. Nevertheless, in order to improve the transverse resolution of the DHM system, a microscope objective has to be introduced in the object beam path, which inevitably leads to phase aberration in the object wavefront. In recent decades, a multitude of techniques have been proposed to compensate for this phase aberration, and the principal component analysis (PCA) technique has proven to be one of the most promi

Differentiation between single bladder cancer cells using principal component analysis of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry.

Time-of-flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) mass spectra measurements combined with an appropriate sample preparation protocol are the powerful tools to obtain unique information about the chemical composition of biological materials. In our studies, two questions were addressed, i.e., whether it is possible to develop a fixative-based sample preparation protocol and whether it allows one to distinguish between cells originating from various stages of cancer progression. Therefore, four human bladder cancer cell lines (with distinct malignancy degree) have been investigated. A ch

Principal component analysis in ground reaction forces and center of pressure gait waveforms of people with transfemoral amputation.

BACKGROUND: The alterations in gait pattern of people with transfemoral amputation leave them more susceptible to musculoskeletal injury. Principal component analysis is a method that reduces the amount of gait data and allows analyzing the entire waveform. OBJECTIVES: To use the principal component analysis to compare the ground reaction force and center of pressure displacement waveforms obtained during gait between able-bodied subjects and both limbs of individuals with transfemoral amputation. STUDY DESIGN: This is a transversal study with a convenience sample. METHODS: We used a force

NMR metabolic profiling combined with two-step principal component analysis for toxin-induced diabetes model rat using urine.

Nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolic profiling (NMR-MP) was applied to evaluate disorder model animals using urine. Diabetic nephropathy was established in this experiment by administering streptozotocin to Wistar rats, which immediately developed diabetes after toxin-treatment and then gradually produced albumin-containing urine (albuminuria). Urine samples were collected for the first 4 weeks after toxin treatment. Predominant urinary sugar signals were seen in (1)H-NMR spectra of diabetes rat urine, and spectra were processed and subjected to multivariate analysis. Principal component

Associations between dietary patterns derived using principal component analysis and personality traits in adults: a cross-sectional study.

The present study explored associations between the five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness) and dietary patterns of apparently healthy individuals. Demographic, anthropometric, dietary, and personality data were obtained from 480 adults, up to 45 years of age, through self-completed questionnaires. Dietary habits were assessed via a validated for the population Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), whereas personality was evaluated with the validated Greek version of the 50-item International Personality Item Pool (IPIP). Five dietary p

Principal component analysis of the Serological response to Plasmodium Falciparum using a Multiplex bead-based assay in Nigeria.

Characterization of serological responses to Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) is of interest to understand disease burden and transmission dynamics; however, their interpretation is challenging. Dried blood spots from 30,815 participants aged 6 months to 15 years from the 2018 Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey were analyzed by multiplex bead-based assay to measure immunoglobulin G (IgG) to Pf-stage-specific MSP-1, AMA-1, GLURPR0, LSA-1, and CSP. These IgG levels were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). PC1 and PC2 scores explained 41% and 17% of the total variance, respectivel

A Robust Tuberculosis Diagnosis Using Chest X-Rays Based on a Hybrid Vision Transformer and Principal Component Analysis.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs, but it can also impact other parts of the body, such as the brain, bones, and kidneys. The disease is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. TB can be inactive or active; in its active state, noticeable symptoms appear, and it can be transmitted to others. There are ongoing challenges in fighting TB, including resistance to medications, co-infections, and limited resources in areas heavily affected by the disease. These issu

A comparison between similarity matrices for principal component analysis to assess population stratification in sequenced genetic data sets.

Genetic similarity matrices are commonly used to assess population substructure (PS) in genetic studies. Through simulation studies and by the application to whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data, we evaluate the performance of three genetic similarity matrices: the unweighted and weighted Jaccard similarity matrices and the genetic relationship matrix. We describe different scenarios that can create numerical pitfalls and lead to incorrect conclusions in some instances. We consider scenarios in which PS is assessed based on loci that are located across the genome ('globally') and based on loci f

Principal component regression analysis of familial psychiatric histories and suicide risk factors among adults with opioid use disorder.

This study explores familial psychiatric risk factors that are closely linked to suicide risk among patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) as measured by the Family History Assessment Module (FHAM). Data was derived from adults diagnosed with OUD (N = 389). To analyze the covariance between the 11 items of the FHAM, principal component analysis was applied to infer principal components (PC) scores. Log-binominal regression was conducted to quantify the associations between PC scores and mental health symptoms (e.g., lifetime suicidal attempt, P30D suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety).

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease on ADNI data using novel longitudinal score based on functional principal component analysis.

Methods: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a worldwide prevalent age-related neurodegenerative disease with no available cure yet. Early prognosis is therefore crucial for planning proper clinical intervention. It is especially true for people diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, to whom the prediction of whether and when the future disease onset would happen is particularly valuable. However, such prognostic prediction has been proven to be challenging, and previous studies have only achieved limited success. Approach: In this study, we seek to extract the principal component of the longitudin

Multivariate functional principal component analysis identifies waveform features of gait biomechanics related to early-to-moderate hip osteoarthritis.

Clinicians often examine movement patterns to design hip osteoarthritis (OA) interventions, yet traditional biomechanical analyses only report a single timepoint. Multivariate principal component analysis (MFPCA) analyzes the entire waveform (i.e., movement pattern), which clinicians observe to direct treatment. This study investigated hip OA indicators, by (1) employing MFPCA to characterize variance across the hip, knee, and ankle angles in healthy and early-to-moderate hip OA participants; and (2) investigating relationships between these waveform features and hip cartilage health. Predicting timing of foot strike during running, independent of striking technique, using principal component analysis of joint angles.

As 3-dimensional (3D) motion-capture for clinical gait analysis continues to evolve, new methods must be developed to improve the detection of gait cycle events based on kinematic data. Recently, the application of principal component analysis (PCA) to gait data has shown promise in detecting important biomechanical features. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to define a new foot strike detection method for a continuum of striking techniques, by applying PCA to joint angle waveforms. In accordance with Newtonian mechanics, it was hypothesized that transient features in the sagittal-plan
