Steroidomics-Based Screening for Primary Aldosteronism: Impact of antihypertensive Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) is complicated by the need to withdraw antihypertensive medications that interfere with test results, particularly renin. This study examined whether machine learning-based steroid-probability scores offer a renin measurement-independent approach for testing less prone to interference than the aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR). METHODS: This prospective multicenter cohort study involved the use of plasma steroidomics and the ARR in 839 patients tested for PA, including 190 with and 578 without PA (71 indeterminate). Receiver operating charact

Research on the Medical Structured Data Desensitization Method Based on a Bayesian Network.

To address the prevalent privacy concerns associated with patient data in current clinical medical data analysis, this paper proposes a medical structured data desensitization method based on Bayesian Network. The proposed method involves constructing a data generation model by learning the statistical and correlational attributes of the original dataset, thereby producing a desensitized dataset that maintains characteristic probability similarity with the source data. The experimental results, based on the analysis of clinical data, demonstrate that the desensitized data generated by this met

Probabilistic Learning by Positive and Negative Reinforcement in Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

This experiment examined learning tendencies in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) using reinforcement feedback for probabilistic outcomes. One hundred sixty-six GAD and 105 non-GAD participants were randomized to a computerized probabilistic learning task that used either negative or positive reinforcement. Participants chose between stimuli with specific probabilities of reinforcement to learn which of each pair had the highest probability. Reinforced choices either removed an angry face (negative reinforcement) or made a happy face appear (positive reinforcement). Results showed that those

EEG Temporal-Spatial Feature Learning for Automated Selection of Stimulus Parameters in Electroconvulsive Therapy.

The risk of adverse effects in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), such as cognitive impairment, can be high if an excessive stimulus is applied to induce the necessary generalized seizure (GS); Conversely, inadequate stimulus results in failure. Recent efforts to automate this task can facilitate statistical analyses on individual parameters or qualitative predictions. However, this automation still significantly lags behind the requirements in clinical practices. This study addresses this issue by predicting the probability of GS induction under the joint restriction of a patient's EEG (electro

Comparison of Different Machine Learning Methodologies for Predicting the Non-Specific Treatment Response in Placebo Controlled Major Depressive Disorder Clinical Trials.

Placebo effect represents a serious confounder for the assessment of treatment effect to the extent that it has become increasingly difficult to develop antidepressant medications appropriate for outperforming placebo. Treatment effect in randomized, placebo-controlled trials, is usually estimated by the mean baseline adjusted difference of treatment response in active and placebo arms and is function of treatment-specific and non-specific effects. The non-specific treatment effect varies subject by subject conditional to the individual propensity to respond to placebo. This effect is not esti

A probabilistic approach for calibration time reduction in hybrid EEG-fTCD brain-computer interfaces.

BACKGROUND: Generally, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) require calibration before usage to ensure efficient performance. Therefore, each BCI user has to attend a certain number of calibration sessions to be able to use the system. However, such calibration requirements may be difficult to fulfill especially for patients with disabilities. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic transfer learning approach to reduce the calibration requirements of our EEG-fTCD hybrid BCI designed using motor imagery (MI) and flickering mental rotation (MR)/word generation (WG) paradigms. The proposed approa

The probabilistic nature of preferential choice.

Previous research has developed a variety of theories explaining when and why people's decisions under risk deviate from the standard economic view of expected utility maximization. These theories are limited in their predictive accuracy in that they do not explain the probabilistic nature of preferential choice, that is, why an individual makes different choices in nearly identical situations, or why the magnitude of these inconsistencies varies in different situations. To illustrate the advantage of probabilistic theories, three probabilistic theories of decision making under risk are compar

Launching the effect: representations of causal movements are influenced by what they lead to.

We investigated whether the representation of an observed causal movement is influenced by its observed effect. Subjects watched displays showing collisions between two objects. In this "launching event" (Michotte, 1946/1963), one of the two objects (Object A) started to move and set a second, initially stationary, object (Object B) into motion, which gave a strong impression of apparent causality. The apparent effectiveness of A's movement was manipulated by varying the velocities of A and B. When the velocity of B was higher than that of A, the effectiveness of the collision was high; when i

Development of an advanced maternal health risk detection system using enhanced XGBOOST and blending models.

OBJECTIVE: Mother's health risks should be identified early so that the outcome of the pregnancy can be enhanced and the complications experienced during pregnancy can be minimized. This paper will design and test a leakage-regulated hybrid machine learning model to predict maternal health risk using the optimized ensemble models. METHODS: It used the publicly available UCI Maternal Health Risk dataset (n = 1015). A fixed random seed was used to stratify the dataset to 80% training and 20% independent testing subsets (42). SMOTENN resampling was only done to the training data to avoid data le

A lightweight deep learning framework for reliable microscopy-based diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical and zoonotic disease affecting both human and animal health, for which microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained slides remains the diagnostic reference standard despite being time-consuming and operator-dependent. In this study, we developed a lightweight, calibration-aware deep learning framework for automated amastigote detection and slide-level diagnostic probability estimation from microscopy images. A U-Net architecture with a MobileNetV2 encoder was employed for pixel-level parasite segmentation using a weakly supervised pseudo-labeli

Machine learning models of clinically relevant biomarkers for the prediction of stable obstructive coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: In patients with suspected obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), evaluation using a pre-test probability model is the key element for diagnosis; however, its accuracy is controversial. This study aimed to develop machine learning (ML) models using clinically relevant biomarkers to predict the presence of stable obstructive CAD and to compare ML models with an established pre-test probability of CAD models. METHODS: Eight machine learning models for prediction of obstructive CAD were trained on a cohort of 1,312 patients [randomly split into the training (80%) and internal val

Reward processing deficits: weakened self-reward association in individuals with methamphetamine addiction undergoing abstinence.

This research primarily investigates whether both reward processing and self-processing are aberrant in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder. It also explores whether initiating self-referential processing modulates reward processing abilities in this population, and how this modulation differs from that observed in healthy controls. Experiment 1 employed a two-factor mixed experimental design to compare the performance of addiction groups with varying withdrawal durations (all participants in the addiction groups were methamphetamine users) against healthy control groups in a probabi

Modulating hierarchical learning by high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation at theta frequency.

Considerable evidence highlights the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) as a key region for hierarchical (i.e. multilevel) learning. In a previous electroencephalography (EEG) study, we found that the low-level prediction errors were encoded by frontal theta oscillations (4-7 Hz), centered on right DLPFC (rDLPFC). However, the causal relationship between frontal theta oscillations and hierarchical learning remains poorly understood. To investigate this question, in the current study, participants received theta (6 Hz) and sham high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (H

Automated identification of chest radiographs with referable abnormality with deep learning: need for recalibration.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the calibration of a deep learning (DL) model in a diagnostic cohort and to improve model's calibration through recalibration procedures. METHODS: Chest radiographs (CRs) from 1135 consecutive patients (M:F = 582:553; mean age, 52.6 years) who visited our emergency department were included. A commercialized DL model was utilized to identify abnormal CRs, with a continuous probability score for each CR. After evaluation of the model calibration, eight different methods were used to recalibrate the original model based on the probability score. The original model outputs

Cognitive biases and decision making in gambling.

Heuristics and cognitive biases can occur in reasoning and decision making. Some of them are very common in gamblers (illusion of control, representativeness, availability, etc.). Structural characteristics and functioning of games of chance favor the appearance of these biases. Two experiments were conducted with nonpathological gamblers. The first experiment was a game of dice with wagers. In the second experiment, the participants played two bingo games. Specific rules of the games favored the appearance of cognitive bias (illusion of control) and heuristics (representativeness and availabi

Intuitive confidence: choosing between intuitive and nonintuitive alternatives.

People often choose intuitive rather than equally valid nonintuitive alternatives. The authors suggest that these intuitive biases arise because intuitions often spring to mind with subjective ease, and the subjective ease leads people to hold their intuitions with high confidence. An investigation of predictions against point spreads found that people predicted intuitive options (favorites) more often than equally valid (or even more valid) nonintuitive alternatives (underdogs). Critically, though, this effect was largely determined by people's confidence in their intuitions (intuitive confid

Semantic similarity of labels and inductive generalization: taking a second look.

Prior research suggests that preschoolers can generalize object properties based on category information conveyed by semantically-similar labels. However, previous research did not control for co-occurrence probability of labels in natural speech. The current studies re-assessed children's generalization with semantically-similar labels. Experiment 1 indicated that adults made category-based inferences regardless of co-occurrence probability; however, 4-year-olds generalized with semantically-similar labels that co-occurred in child-directed speech (e.g., bunny-rabbit) but not with non-co-occu

Learning to avoid spiders: fear predicts performance, not competence.

We used an immersive virtual environment to examine avoidance learning in spider-fearful participants. In 3 experiments, participants were asked to repeatedly lift one of 3 virtual boxes, under which either a toy car or a spider appeared and then approached the participant. Participants were not told that the probability of encountering a spider differed across boxes. When the difference was large (Exps. 1 and 2), spider-fearfuls learned to avoid spiders by lifting the few-spiders-box more often and the many-spiders-box less often than non-fearful controls did. However, they hardly managed to

Impact of censoring on learning Bayesian networks in survival modelling.

OBJECTIVE: Bayesian networks are commonly used for presenting uncertainty and covariate interactions in an easily interpretable way. Because of their efficient inference and ability to represent causal relationships, they are an excellent choice for medical decision support systems in diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Although good procedures for learning Bayesian networks from data have been defined, their performance in learning from censored survival data has not been widely studied. In this paper, we explore how to use these procedures to learn about possible interactions between progno
