Over the past 60 years, our ability to live and work in space has evolved. From short sojourns in small spacecraft to landing on the moon and residing in an orbiting international space station, we have learned to adapt to an extreme environment and safely return home. Human missions to the Moon, Mars, and exploration of deep space are different. This paper summarizes the challenges of providing medical care, specifically mental health care during long-duration flights. Considerable information about challenges that crews bound for Mars will face is available. Literature regarding this issue i

OBJECTIVE: To examine dual food and energy hardship and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in 9-year-old children.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a prospective national urban birth cohort, when the children were 9 years old. Maternal-reported "food hardship" (ever hungry and/or ever received free food) and "energy hardship" (ever unable to pay utility bill and/or utility shutoff) within the past year, and child behavior using the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 were assessed. Multiple logistic regressio

To assess emotional and behavioral problems in children and adolescents with neurofibromatosis type 1,parents of 183 individuals aged 10.8 ± 3.1 years (range 6-17) completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Also, 173 teachers completed the Teacher's Report Form (TRF), and 88 adolescents (children from 11 to 17 years) completed the Youth Self-Report (YSR). According to parental ratings, 32% scored in the clinical range (above the 90th percentile). This percentage was much lower when rated by teachers or adolescents themselves. Scores from all informants on scales for Somatic complaints, Soc

BACKGROUND: The potential harm from exposure to nonessential metals, particularly mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb), has been the focus of research for years. Initial interest focused on relatively high exposures; however, recent evidence suggests that even background exposures might have adverse consequences for child development. Identifying the extent of these consequences is now a priority.
METHODS: We assessed blood Pb and Hg levels in a biracial sample of 9-11 year-old children (N = 203). Neurodevelopment and psychological functioning assessments included hostility, disruptive behaviors, emoti

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with food allergy have poorer psychosocial outcomes compared with their nonallergic counterparts; however, few studies have prospectively examined the mental health of adolescents and young adults in this vulnerable population. Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems in an epidemiological sample of adolescents and young adults with food allergy; determine whether food allergy is associated with adolescent and maternal reports of such problems; and examine the patterns of change in emotional and behavioral problems from adolesc

Background and aims In many jurisdictions, where gambling services are provided, regulatory codes require gambling operators to apply a duty of care toward patrons. A common feature of these provisions is some expectation that venue staff identify and assist patrons who might be experiencing problems with their gambling. The effectiveness of such measures is, however, predicated on the assumption that there are reliable and observable indicators that might be used to allow problem gamblers to be distinguished from other gamblers. Methods In this study, we consolidate the findings from two larg

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems can have a significant effect on children behaviors, emotional and cognitive developments. However, limited information is available regarding the sleep behaviors and sleep problems of school-aged children in Thailand. The purposes of this study were to examine the prevalence of sleep problems and to describe sleep/wake pattern of Thai children.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The school-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in 5 primary public schools selected from Bangkok and three regions of Thailand. The samples were selected from the first and fourth grades of each s

OBJECTIVE: To describe behavior problems in extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g) adolescents born 1992 through 1995 based on parent ratings and adolescent self-ratings at age 14 years and to examine changes in parent ratings from ages 8-14.
METHOD: Parent ratings of behavior problems and adolescent self-ratings were obtained for 169 ELBW adolescents (mean birth weight 815 g, gestational age 26 wk) and 115 normal birth weight (NBW) controls at 14 years. Parent ratings of behavior at age 8 years were also available. Behavior outcomes were assessed using symptom severity scores and rates o

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has found an association between sleep problems and suicidal behavior. However, it is still unclear whether the association can be largely explained by depression. In this study, we prospectively examined relationships between sleep problems when participants were 12-14 years old and subsequent suicidal thoughts and self-harm behaviors--including suicide attempts--at ages 15-17 while controlling for depressive symptoms at baseline.
METHODS: Study participants were 280 boys and 112 girls from a community sample of high-risk alcoholic families and controls in an ong

OBJECTIVE: Phonological awareness is a key precursor of reading and writing skills in preschool children. Many children with reading and spelling problems have comorbid disorders that have a negative impact on their development. Research to date has rarely focused on the interaction between behavioral problems and phonological awareness.
METHOD: The study investigates whether preschool children with difficulties in phonological awareness already show behavioral problems. Children (N = 188) were interviewed to assess their level of phonological awareness and teachers used the SDQ to rate their

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are a common complaint of parents of preschool children. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders have even more disrupted sleep than typically developing children. Although disrupted nighttime sleep has been reported to affect daytime behavior, the pathway from sleep disruption to sleep problems, to impairments in daytime performance or behavior is not clear. This multi-method, preliminary study assessed this path in 68 children with autism, matched to 57 children with developmental delay without autism and 69 children developing typically.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of problem behaviors in adults with intellectual disabilities and to investigate which factors are independently associated with problem behaviors. A population-based cohort (n = 1023) had comprehensive individual assessments. Data were examined using multivariate logistic regression. The prevalence of problem behaviors was 22.5% (psychiatrists' opinion) or 18.7% (DC-LD criteria). Factors independently associated with problem behaviors were lower ability level, female gender, living in a congregate care setting or with paid carer support (rather tha

Behavioral problems are common in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and can be challenging to manage at home. Standardized measures were used to assess behavior in 99 pediatric patients with TSC and to evaluate parenting stress in their parents. About 40% of the pediatric patients presented clinically significant behavioral problems, most frequently involving symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, inattention, and hyperactivity. Higher seizure frequency, mixed seizure disorder, and low intellectual functioning placed the patient at significant risk for behavior problems. Almost 50%

Our objective was to examine the overlap between autistic traits and other behavioral problems in a general population sample, and explore the extent to which this overlap is due to genetic or environmental factors. Youth Self Report (YSR) data were collected in a general population sample of 424 twin pairs at 18 years of age, and their nontwin siblings. In 197 of these twin families, self-report ratings on the Autism-spectrum Quotient (AQ) were collected. Stepwise backward regression analyses revealed that of all 8 YSR syndrome scales, the Withdrawn Behavior (WB) and Social Problems (SOC) sca

A mental health clinic was developed for toddlers with developmental disabilities and significant behavior problems from families living in poverty. The clinic was a collaborative effort between a community-based Birth-to-Three agency and a university. The purpose of this clinic was threefold: to provide direct mental health services for these young children, to train graduate students to work with this population, and to begin to contribute to the limited research available in this area. This paper describes the clinical intake procedures and outcomes for the 81 children served by the clinic

AIM: To assess cognitive functions in children who were reported by their teachers and parents to exhibit learning and/or behavioural problems, especially in the field of attention.
METHOD: In connection with the scheduled school health examination in grade 4 in one municipality, 591 children were screened through questionnaires and interviews with the parents and teachers. Those with positive rating scores were subjected to further cognitive assessments, including the WISC III. A cluster analysis based on cognitive data was performed.
RESULTS: One third (175 children) of the population obta

The study examines the effects of being born small for gestational age (SGA) on rates of behavioral problems in twins and siblings, utilising data from the Australian Twin Study of disruptive behavior disorders in twins and their siblings. Participants were 3944 twins and their siblings who were assessed at two intervals three years apart. At the first assessment (1991), they ranged between 4 and 12 years of age. Items assessing Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder were based on DSM-III-R criteria (Time 1) and DSM-IV criteria (Time 2). Other measures included history of speech and reading

Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used with a 15-item adolescent self-report measure to identify 4 salient friendship characteristics--Reciprocity of Relations, Overt Hostility, Covert Hostility, and Self-Disclosure--with a sample of about 1,100 middle adolescents. Higher levels of Overt and Covert Hostility and lower levels of Reciprocity of Relations with one's closest friend were associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption, percentage of friends who drink, delinquent activity, depressive symptoms, and suicidal behaviors. Self-Disclosure was positively correlated wit

A 3-month observational study of 24 agitated and severely cognitively impaired nursing home residents was conducted to document the typical ways in which residents spend their time and how time use relates to the manifestation of agitated behaviors. We found that these residents were involved in no activity during 63% of the observations. In addition, residents spent little time in structured activities (e.g., music therapy) or social activities (e.g., receiving visitors). Yet data analysis revealed that residents manifested a greater number of agitated behaviors when they were unoccupied and

In order to study the outcome of childhood behavior problems and to investigate relationships between those behavior problems and mental health problems in later years, a survey which was conducted in 1977 was repeated after six years. Subjects were randomly selected children aged from three to seven years living in Bunkyo-ku in Tokyo in 1977. Out of 279 children, responses to the questionnaire were obtained for 201 children, with 39 refusing to co-operate and 39 having left the area. The main results were as follows: 1. Comparison of prevalence rates of individual behavior problems occurring
