Identifying DNA mutations in Sepia, White, Yellow, and Vestigial genes in D. melanogaster - Integrating inquiry-based experiential learning into undergraduate Genetics Laboratory curriculum.

Eye, body, and wing morphology in D. melanogaster are distinctly tied to genes that can easily be monitored to decipher the association between phenotype and genotype. Toward the goal of uncovering the DNA mutations responsible for these phenotypes, we share the development and implementation of a semester-long upper-level general Genetics laboratory course, in which an inquiry-based research component is integrated into the curriculum. The experimental design can be adaptable and covers essential molecular biology concepts as well as experimental procedures. Specifically, we obtained mutant a

Life is in the Blood: Experiential Learning in Surgical Missions.

Many healthcare facilities in low-income countries (LICs) lack on-site blood banks, creating unfamiliar barriers to U.S. healthcare workers on mission trips. Abdominal hysterectomies are frequently performed on surgical missions and may require transfusion. In this case study, a patient received warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) from student registered nurse anesthetists and a registered nurse, post-hysterectomy in Guatemala. This case highlights preparedness for critical needs, the value of WFWB, and the educational and personal values gained on international missions. Clinical implications of WF

Empowering Third-Year Medical Students to Detect Bias and Medical Misinformation Online via Experiential Learning of "Lateral Reading," A Fact-Checker's Technique.

Problem: Misleading health information is detrimental to public health. Even physicians can be misled by biased health information; however, medical students and physicians are not taught some of the most effective techniques for identifying bias and misinformation online. Intervention: Using the stages of Kolb's experiential learning cycle as a framework, we aimed to teach 117 third-year students at a United States medical school to apply a fact-checking technique for identifying bias and misinformation called "lateral reading" through a 50-minute learning cycle in a 90-minute class. Each stu

Representation scaffolds improve diagnostic efficiency in medical students.

CONTEXT: Diagnostic efficiency is important in daily clinical practice as doctors have to face problems within a limited time frame. To foster the clinical reasoning of students is a major challenge in medical education research. Little is known about students' diagnostic efficiency. On the basis of current theories, scaffolds for case representation (statement of the case as far as it is summarised in the mind) could be a promising approach to make the diagnostic reasoning of intermediate medical students more efficient. METHODS: Clinical case processing of 88 medical students in their fourt

Case-based learning and multiple choice questioning methods favored by students.

BACKGROUND: Investigating and understanding how students learn on their own is essential to effective teaching, but studies are rarely conducted in this context. A major aim within medical education is to foster procedural knowledge. It is known that case-based questioning exercises drive the learning process, but the way students deal with these exercises is explored little. METHODS: This study examined how medical students deal with case-based questioning by evaluating 426 case-related questions created by 79 fourth-year medical students. The subjects covered by the questions, the level of

Consensus and learning climate in temporary versus permanent teams in team-based learning.

BACKGROUND: In team-based learning, students are typically placed in fixed teams based on the idea that stable group membership fosters collaboration: as teammates get to know each other, they share more information, resolve differences and feel motivated to contribute. This rationale had not been tested in a randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVE: The study compares team-based learning in temporary teams with the default permanent teams regarding individual and team readiness assurance test performance (iRAT, tRAT), reaching team consensus, the learning climate, and intrinsic motivation. Obesity simulation suits in health professions education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Weight-related stigma toward people living with obesity is widespread in healthcare settings and has been documented among students and professionals across health disciplines. Such stigma may negatively affect communication, clinical decision-making, and quality of care. Educational strategies aimed at addressing weight bias and fostering empathy during the training of health professionals are therefore of growing interest. In recent years, obesity simulation suits have been introduced as experiential learning tools intended to sensitize learners to physical and psychosocial chall

Using Virtual Interactive Training Agents (ViTA) with Adults with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities.

Conversational virtual human (VH) agents are increasingly used to support role-play experiential learning. This project examined whether a Virtual Interactive Training Agent (ViTA) system would improve job interviewing skills in individuals with autism and developmental disabilities (N = 32). A linear mixed model was employed to evaluate adjusted least square mean differences of means scores on the Marino Interview Assessment Scale (MIAS) across different time points. The mean score of MIAS over all questions increased between the first ViTA session and the final face-to-face interview. Partic

Small group teaching: clinical correlation with a human patient simulator.

The popularity of the problem-based learning paradigm has stimulated new interest in small group, interactive teaching techniques. Medical educators of physiology have long recognized the value of such methods, using animal-based laboratories to demonstrate difficult physiological principles. Due to ethical and other concerns, a replacement of this teaching tool has been sought. Here, the author describes the use of a full-scale human patient simulator for such a workshop. The simulator is a life-size mannequin with physical findings (palpable pulses, breath/heart sounds, blinking eyes, etc.)

Practice makes imperfect: restorative effects of sleep on motor learning.

Emerging evidence suggests that sleep plays a key role in procedural learning, particularly in the continued development of motor skill learning following initial acquisition. We argue that a detailed examination of the time course of performance across sleep on the finger-tapping task, established as the paradigm for studying the effect of sleep on motor learning, will help distinguish a restorative role of sleep in motor skill learning from a proactive one. Healthy subjects rehearsed for 12 trials and, following a night of sleep, were tested. Early training rapidly improved speed as well as
