Rehabilitation of post-stroke aphasia in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia, a common consequence of stroke, which affects both communication and social functioning, and in turn, quality of life, is on the rise due to increases in stroke prevalence and survival rate. The rehabilitation of post-stroke aphasia primarily falls within the purview of speech-language pathology and research supports the effectiveness of such services. However, provision of aphasia rehabilitation services in sub-Saharan Africa is associated with challenges. AIMS: This study aimed to examine rehabilitation services for individuals with post-stroke aphasia in Ghana by explo

A web access script language to support clinical application development.

This paper describes the development of a script language to support the implementation of decentralized, clinical information applications on the World Wide Web (Web). The goal of this work is to facilitate construction of low overhead, fully functional clinical information systems that can be accessed anywhere by low cost Web browsers to search, retrieve and analyze stored patient data. The Web provides a model of network access to data bases on a global scale. Although it was originally conceived as a means to exchange scientific documents, Web browsers and servers currently support access

The role of speech language pathologists in the management of dysphagia, 1989.

Speech-language pathologists involved in the management of patients with dysphagia provide services that include evaluation, diagnosis, and rehabilitation. Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that may be due to various neurological, structural, and cognitive deficits. While dysphagia can afflict any age group, it most often presents among the elderly. Rehabilitation efforts by the speech-language pathologist are undertaken after a medical diagnosis and referral have been made. The dysphagia evaluation begins with a bedside examination that is sometimes followed by a video-fluoroscopic study. Th

Scanner-agnostic dynamic jaw motion generation from virtual static excursive records using open-source Python-based artificial intelligence (AI) interpolation.

This technique describes a scanner-agnostic digital workflow for generating dynamic mandibular motion from static virtual interocclusal records using a custom artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and user interface. Virtual records of mandibular positions, including maximum intercuspation, protrusion, and lateral excursions, were captured with an intraoral scanner and processed through a custom interface developed using Python, an open-source, script-based programming language. The program interpolates intermediate positions using quantified point tracking and exports a motion path file comp

Reading improvement in English- and Hebrew-speaking children with reading difficulties after reading acceleration training.

A reading acceleration program known to improve reading fluency in Hebrew-speaking adults was tested for its effect on children. Eighty-nine Hebrew- and English-speaking children with reading difficulties were divided into a waiting list group and two training groups (Hebrew and English) and underwent 4 weeks of reading acceleration training. Results of pre- and post-testing of reading abilities point to a significant main effect of the test, demonstrating improvements in silent contextual reading speed, reading comprehension, and speed of processing in both Hebrew and English training groups

Migration of legacy mumps applications to relational database servers.

An extended implementation of the Mumps language is described that facilitates vendor neutral migration of legacy Mumps applications to SQL-based relational database servers. Implemented as a compiler, this system translates Mumps programs to operating system independent, standard C code for subsequent compilation to fully stand-alone, binary executables. Added built-in functions and support modules extend the native hierarchical Mumps database with access to industry standard, networked, relational database management servers (RDBMS) thus freeing Mumps applications from dependence upon vendor

Effect of intensive training on auditory processing and reading skills.

This study assessed the ability of seven children to accurately judge relative durations of auditory and visual stimuli before and after participation in a language remediation program. The goal of the intervention program is to improve the children's ability to detect and identify rapidly changing auditory stimuli, and thereby improve their language-related skills. Children showed improved accuracy on a test of auditory duration judgement following the intervention without analogous improvements in the visual domain, supporting the assertion that intensive training with modified speech improv

French immersion experience and reading skill development in at-risk readers.

We tracked the developmental influences of exposure to French on developing English phonological awareness, decoding and reading comprehension of English-speaking at-risk readers from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Teacher-nominated at-risk readers were matched with not-at-risk readers in French immersion and English language programs. Exposure to spoken French phonetic and syllabic forms and to written French orthographic and morphological forms by children attending French immersion programs was expected to promote phonological, decoding and reading comprehension achievement. Growth in all outcomes was

Computer-based auditory training (CBAT): benefits for children with language- and reading-related learning difficulties.

This article reviews the evidence for computer-based auditory training (CBAT) in children with language, reading, and related learning difficulties, and evaluates the extent it can benefit children with auditory processing disorder (APD). Searches were confined to studies published between 2000 and 2008, and they are rated according to the level of evidence hierarchy proposed by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) in 2004. We identified 16 studies of two commercially available CBAT programs (13 studies of Fast ForWord (FFW) and three studies of Earobics) and five further ou

Programing AAC just-in-time for beginning communicators: the process.

Individuals who have limited or no speech as a result of intellectual and developmental disabilities and who are beginning communicators (i.e., are learning early linguistic skills such as first words and early semantic relations) require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to build both their expressive communication and their internal language structures. Programing AAC just-in-time is a promising clinical approach to intervention for beginning communicators because of its alignment with early language development theory. Early research efforts also provide emerging evidence to

The World Report on Disability in relation to the development of speech-language pathology in Viet Nam.

Wylie, McAllister, Davidson, and Marshall (2013) argue that recommendations made within the World Report on Disability provide an opportunity for speech-language pathologists to consider new ways of developing services for people with communication and swallowing disorders. They propose that current approaches to the delivery of speech-language pathology services are largely embedded within the medical model of impairment, thereby limiting the ability of services to meet the needs of people in a holistic manner. In this paper, the criticality of selecting an appropriate service delivery model

[The language and speech skills in 417 children with cleft formations].

Children with cleft palate often suffer from hearing, speech, and language articulation disorders. In order to design an efficient rehabilitation program for children thus affected, it is mandatory to acquire knowledge of the long term results achieved by the various therapeutical strategies including velopharyngoplasty and speech therapy. In this follow-up study 417 children with cleft palate (excluding isolated cleft lip) were examined in an interdisciplinary approach by maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, audiologists, and speech and language pathologists.
