Sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis caused by mastoid implant -- case report.

INTRODUCTION: Extraoral craniofacial implants are often used for retention of auricular prostheses. In this case report, the rare complication of sigmoid and transverse sinus thrombosis after implant placement in the mastoid is described. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old man with congenital hypoplasia of the right ear was treated with an implant-based auricular prosthesis. One of the three implants in the mastoid area had to be removed because of an infection, whereas the other two implants were removed at the patient's request. Twenty-four days after implant removal, he was seen with sigmoid and t

Displacement of Zygomatic Implant in Infratemporal Region in a Case of COVID-19-Associated Mucormycosis.

Reconstruction of maxillary defects can be carried out using a variety of treatment modalities. The choice of modality depends on numerous factors, including the size and extent of the defect, patient characteristics, and existing comorbidities. One of the various options is reconstruction and rehabilitation using a fixed prosthesis supported over a zygomatic implant. In maxillectomy cases, a zygomatic implant can be used to improve the retention of the obturator prosthesis, as the loss of alveolar bone makes it impossible to use conventional endosseous implants. Although zygomatic implants ar

Prosthetic rehabilitation of acquired maxillary defects secondary to mucormycosis: clinical cases.

Maxillary necrosis can occur due to bacterial infections such as osteomyelitis, viral infections, such as herpes zoster or fungal infections, such as mucormycosis, aspergillosis etc. Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection, which mainly infects immunocompromised patients. Once the maxilla is involved, surgical resection and debridement of the necrosed areas can result in extensive maxillary defects. The clinician is to face many a challenge in order to replace not only the missing teeth, but also the lost soft tissues and bone, including hard palate and alveolar ridges. The prosthesi

Patient outcome with reinfection following reimplantation for the infected total knee arthroplasty.

From 1976 to 1992, 24 knees (24 patients) were treated for reinfection after reimplantation of a prosthesis to treat an infected total knee arthroplasty. Including the index total knee arthroplasty, the average number of total procedures for the affected knee was 9.3 procedures (range, 5-23 procedures), and surgical procedures used for the affected knee after reinfection averaged 3.7 procedures (range, 1-12 procedures). The final outcome included 10 knees with a successful knee arthrodeses, 5 patients with infected prostheses who were prescribed suppressive oral antibiotic treatment, 4 above t

Managing Adolescent Root Fractures: Socket Shield Managing Adolescent Root Fractures: Socket Shield.

Root fractures in adolescents present unique esthetic and prosthodontic challenges, especially when complicated by oblique or vertical fracture lines that preclude traditional root submergence. A 15-year-old female sustained multiple traumatic dental injuries, including a complex root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor, following a motor vehicle accident. Polytrauma management included pulpal therapy, splinting and interim prosthesis fabrication, but the incisor demonstrated both horizontal and vertical fracture components, contraindicating conventional root submergence therapy. So

[Survey of treatment-seeking complete denture wearers concerning tooth loss, retention behavior and treatment expectations].

The aim of the current study was to gather information about time and etiology of tooth loss, and to analyze the reasons for treatment needs with a questionnaire used among edentulous patients. 60 patients (age 44-98 years) who requested dental treatment were included. More than half of the patients were edentulous before the age of 60, in almost all cases the maxilla was affected first. This difference was more pronounced in women, who experienced tooth loss in the maxilla 17 years prior to the mandible. At the time of edentulism women were about ten years younger than men. According to patie

Surgical management of contracted eye socket.

BACKGROUND: Anophthalmia-the absence of an eye-can significantly impact patients' psychological well-being, affecting self-confidence, body image, social interactions, and contributing to anxiety and depression. Contracted socket, characterized by reduced orbital volume and forniceal depth, poses a major challenge to fitting an ocular prosthesis. This study evaluates the effectiveness of skin grafts and mucous membrane grafts in forniceal reconstruction. METHODS: This prospective case series included 25 patients with varying degrees of contracted sockets treated between October 2020 and Decem

Activity of Phage and Vancomycin in a Murine Staphylococcus aureus Periprosthetic Joint Infection Model Managed With Debridement and Implant Retention.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication of total joint arthroplasty (TJA), with Staphylococcus aureus being one of the most common causative organisms. Irrigation and debridement with component retention (IDCR) is often performed to manage PJI. Antimicrobial treatment that targets S. aureus biofilms on prosthesis surfaces and within bone may be especially helpful when retaining a prosthesis. Phages, viruses that specifically infect bacteria, are a potential therapeutic consideration. Using a biofilm time kill assay in bovine synovial fluid, bactericidal activity of vanco

Cyclic socket enlargement and reduction during walking to minimize limb fluid volume loss in transtibial prosthesis users.

The purpose of this research was to pursue an innovative cyclic panel-pull strategy during ambulation to minimize limb fluid volume loss in transtibial prosthesis users. Participants' traditional socket shapes were duplicated, and test sockets prepared with three adjustable motor-driven panels that were controlled by a microprocessor. After donning the prosthesis, participants' liners were fastened to the panels. During a 40 min test session, participants conducted three cycles of sitting (5 min) and walking (8 min). During the 5th and 6th min of each cycle of walking, the panels were cyclical

Use of osseointegrated implants in the intermaxillary suture: a new possibility for the prosthetic rehabilitation of atrophic maxillae.

Patients with atrophy of the maxillae, generally the elderly, are usually difficult to handle clinically, mainly due to the lack of retention, stability, and masticatory effectiveness of the total removable prosthesis. A new technique involving osseointegrated implants that are parallel to each other and arranged in the intermaxillary suture seems to provide great advantages over the current options for oral rehabilitation. This technique is quick and effective, being performed with local anesthesia and without a bone graft, and still presents low morbidity and cost.

Biomechanical Properties of Bionic Collum Femoris Preserving Hip Prosthesis: A Finite Element Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with total hip replacement, conventional collum femoris preserving prosthesis has a better bone retention effect. However, damage to the trabecular bone of the proximal femur leads to inevitable abnormal stress distribution, which leads to increased risks of femoral neck bone absorption, periprosthetic fracture, prosthesis loosening, rotation, and sinking. Thus, we compare the biomechanical properties of collum femoris preserving (CFP) and bionic collum femoris preserving (BCFP) hip prostheses. METHODS: The Sawbone digital model (#3503, left, medium) was selected as the re

Evaluation of locator versus TITACH attachments for mandibular 2-implant overdentures: a one-year randomized controlled clinical trial.

Implant overdenture attachments serve as the crucial link between dental implants and removable dentures, significantly enhancing the stability, retention, and function of the prosthesis. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of locator and TITACH attachments in retaining mandibular two-implant overdentures, maximum bite force, and marginal bone loss. The study involved 36 edentulous patients, each receiving new complete dentures (CDs) designed with the bilateral balanced occlusal concept. Two implants were positioned in the mandibular canine regions. Participants were randomly a

Periprosthetic tuberculosis of the knee joint treated with antituberculosis drugs: a case report.

We report a 55-year old man with periprosthetic tuberculosis infection following a total knee arthroplasty surgery performed during an active tuberculosis infection. The patient was conservatively treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs and retention of prosthesis. There was no recurrence during an 18-month follow-up period. Tuberculosis arthritis should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with osteoarthritis requiring replacement surgery. Conservative treatment with antituberculosis drugs may be an option in periprosthetic tuberculosis infections without loosening.

Oculo-facial rehabilitation after facial cancer removal: updated CAD/CAM procedures: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Leaving open or closing the oculo-facial defect by means of a myocutaneous flap mainly depends on maxillofacial surgical considerations. For those cases that present a closed defect, the authors aim to evaluate an innovative method of ocular bulb positioning using a magnetic resonance imaging dataset. TECHNIQUE: Following cancer removal and plastic reconstructive surgery, a Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine format magnetic resonance imaging dataset was used to determine the volume and position of the left ocular bulb. The exact location of the prosthetic bulb

Maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation using extraoral implants.

The prosthetic rehabilitation is a surgical alternative in functional-aesthetic facial reconstruction when the conventional reconstructive surgery cannot be applied either because of the psychophysical conditions of the patient or because of an excessive substance loss. From May 2002, 35 facial prosthesis (111 implants) have been positioned. Defects were congenital (N = 12), consequent to trauma (N = 8) and to demolitive surgery for malignant tumors (N= 8), and infection (N = 7). In 4 patients, implants were placed in previously irradiated areas. A total of 111 titanium implants were placed to

Anisotropy, heterogeneity, and limited sex differences in aortic suture retention.

BACKGROUND: Suture-line complications following aortic graft repair can have life-threatening consequences. To mitigate the clinical risk of anastomotic dehiscence, vascular prostheses are evaluated using the suture retention test defined by ISO 7198:2016. While appropriate for synthetic grafts under controlled loading conditions, this standard does not account for the nonlinear, anisotropic, and heterogeneous mechanical behavior of native elastic arteries, their composite microstructure, or variability among animal models used in preclinical testing. METHODS: We applied ISO suture pull-to-fa

Research progress on debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) for the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection after artificial joint replacement.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most serious complications following artificial joint replacement, posing significant treatment challenges and a heavy clinical burden. Debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) has become the preferred treatment strategy for acute PJI due to its advantages of minimal invasiveness, functional preservation, and cost-effectiveness. This article reviews the latest advances in optimizing the indications, timing of intervention, key technical details, and multimodal anti-infection strategies for DAIR. It focuses on discussing patient s

Influence of Skeletal and Local Bone Density on Dental Implant Stability in Patients with Osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is a major skeletal disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Recent studies claim that patients with osteoporosis do not have a higher risk of early implant failure compared to non-osteoporotic patients. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of skeletal osteoporosis and local bone density on initial dental implant stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-three patients were recruited and were assigned (based on a Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry scan) to either the osteoporosis (Opr), osteopenia (Opn), or control (C) group.
