Fibrous tumor of the superior oblique tendon in Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a disorder of patchy, or mosaic, postnatal overgrowth. Mosaic somatic mutation of the AKT1 gene has been identified in over 90% of individuals meeting the diagnostic criteria for Proteus syndrome. Onset occurs in infancy and can involve any tissue of the body. The connective tissue and bone, skin, central nervous system, and the eye are commonly involved. Epibulbar tumors, strabismus, and posterior segment involvement have previously been reported. However, there have not been any reports of lesions affecting the extraocular tendons. We report a case of Proteus syndrome pat

Proteus syndrome: three case reports with a review of the literature.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare, progressive disorder that manifests as asymmetric, disproportionate overgrowth affecting tissues derived from any germline layer. Cases of PS from 2005-2010 were retrieved from the pathology files at our institution. Two confirmed cases and one possible case of PS were identified. All patients came from different ethnic backgrounds. Patient 1 displayed classic skin and overgrowth lesions. Patient 2 displayed various features, particularly vascular malformations. Patient 3 demonstrated a cerebriform connective tissue nevus alone. These patients demonstrate the s

Macrodactyly with skin hypertrophy: a minimal form of the Proteus syndrome.

The Proteus syndrome was described 1983 . It has asymmetric gigantism of the limbs, verrucous epidermal naevi, cerebriform enlargement of the plantar region, vascular malformations and neoplasms, as lipomas. It received this denomination after Proteus from the Greek mythology, who had the ability to change his form . A 15 year-old boy, reported a congenital hypertrophy with syndactily of the second and third right fingers . The second case is a 35 year-old man, who reported that since birth the second right toe was bigger than the other toes, skin hypertrophy was also observed. These cases doc

Proteus syndrome: report of a case with recurrent abdominal lipomatosis.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is an extremely rare congenital hamartomatous syndrome that was first delineated by Cohen and Hayden (1). The estimated prevalence is less than 1 per 1,000,000 live births (2). It is a sporadic disorder that causes overgrowth of multiple tissues, especially bone, fat, and other connective tissues in a patchy or mosaic pattern. Subcutaneous as well as internal lipomas that may grow to an enormous size are frequently observed. Nevertheless, among the internal lipomas, abdominal lipomatosis is rare (3), with less than 15 cases reported. Herein, we report the first patient de

An electrified catheter to resist encrustation by Proteus mirabilis biofilm.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of iontophoresis produced by passing an electric current through silver electrodes attached to catheters on catheter encrustation by crystalline Proteus mirabilis biofilm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four glass bladder models were catheterized with 16Fr silicone catheters, of which 3 had 0.25 mm silver wires running through and beside the lumen. Two wired catheters had the silver wires connected to a 9 V direct current source supplying a steady current of 150 microA via a self-regulating circuit. Artificial urine, which had been inoculated with a clinical strain

Ossicular discontinuity and exostoses in Proteus syndrome: a case report.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare hamartomatous disorder characterized by mosaic overgrowth of multiple tissues that manifests early in life and is progressive. The presence of unilateral external auditory canal exostoses in a patient who is not a swimmer or surfer is suggestive of PS. However, hearing loss is not a typical feature. Here, we describe exostoses and ossicular discontinuity with conductive hearing loss in a patient with PS. The treatment consisted of canalplasty and ossicular chain reconstruction. A postoperative reduction was demonstrated in the patient's air-bone gap, from 21 dB

Polymer surface properties and their effect on the adhesion of Proteus mirabilis.

A problem encountered in patients undergoing long-term catheterization of the urinary tract is that of encrustation and blockage of the catheter by crystalline bacterial biofilms. This is principally caused by the action of the urease-producing pathogen Proteus mirabilis. A major aim of this work is to develop materials resistant to encrustation. Here, the effects of polymer surface properties on the adhesion of P. mirabilis are examined. Spin-coated polymer films were characterized through contact angle measurements to give the Lifschitz-van der Waals, electron acceptor and electron donor ter

Elattoproteus syndrome: delineation of an inverse form of Proteus syndrome.

A 7-year-old boy had partial lipohypoplasia and patchy dermal hypoplasia involving large areas of his body. These areas of deficient growth were similar to those described in many cases of Proteus syndrome. Paradoxically, however, he had only few and rather mild lesions of disproportionate overgrowth. This unusual case is taken as a clue to postulate the Elattoproteus syndrome, an inverse form of Proteus syndrome. The paradoxical coexistence of hyperplastic and hypoplastic lesions may reflect a twin spot phenomenon. The patient would carry at the Proteus locus one allele giving rise to overgro

Human anti-scrub typhus rickettsia and rabbit anti-Proteus antibodies recognize similar epitope in the O-polysaccharide part of Proteus mirabilis OXK lipopolysaccharide.

In the Weil-Felix test, sera from patients infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi reacted with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Proteus mirabilis OXK strains. The O-polysaccharide of P. mirabilis OXK LPS consisted of pentasaccharide repeating units, with amidically-linked lysine residues. The lysine, linked to galacturonic residues, which plays an important role in the reaction with rabbit anti-OXK antibodies, was revealed with the aid of synthetic antigens. Using ELISA, immunoglobulin M antibodies from scrub typhus patients reacted with the O-specific polysaccharide of strain OXK LPS only. This re

A Case Report of a Mild and Atypical Presentation of Proteus Syndrome.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by mosaic AKT1 mutations, leading to progressive and asymmetric overgrowth. We report a mildly symptomatic 12-year-old male with left lower limb overgrowth and an epidermal nevus, whose diagnosis was confirmed through molecular diagnostics. Targeted NGS identified the pathogenic AKT1 c.49G>A mutation in affected tissues, supporting the diagnosis despite the absence of hallmark features like cerebriform connective tissue nevus. This case highlights the importance of genetic testing in subtle presentations of PS, enabling early diagnosis, m

Lack of mutation-histopathology correlation in a patient with Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome (PS) is characterized by progressive, disproportionate, segmental overgrowth, and tumor susceptibility caused by a somatic mosaic AKT1 activating mutation. Each individual has unique manifestations making this disorder extremely heterogeneous. We correlated three variables in 38 tissue samples from a patient who died with PS: the gross affection status, the microscopic affection status, and the mutation level. The AKT1 mutation was measured using a PCR-based RFLP assay. Thirteen samples were grossly normal; six had detectable mutation (2-29%) although four of these six were hi

Radiographic manifestations of the temporomandibular joint in a case of Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a rare disorder with progressive asymmetrical and disproportionate overgrowth of various tissues of the body. The syndrome is characterized by a wide range of malformations, including craniofacial deformities. Extraoral examination revealed several of the classical craniofacial features of Proteus syndrome: pronounced hemifacial hypertrophy, macrodactyly and hyperostosis. Intraoral examination revealed a high arched palate and gingival hyperplasia. Other findings were unilateral enlargement of the tongue, alveolar growth and dilaceration of the roots of the teeth. A mosaic activating mutation in AKT1 associated with the Proteus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The Proteus syndrome is characterized by the overgrowth of skin, connective tissue, brain, and other tissues. It has been hypothesized that the syndrome is caused by somatic mosaicism for a mutation that is lethal in the nonmosaic state. METHODS: We performed exome sequencing of DNA from biopsy samples obtained from patients with the Proteus syndrome and compared the resultant DNA sequences with those of unaffected tissues obtained from the same patients. We confirmed and extended an observed association, using a custom restriction-enzyme assay to analyze the DNA in 158 samples fr

Observations on the adherence of Proteus mirabilis onto polymer surfaces.

AIMS: Infection of the catheterized urinary tract with Proteus mirabilis causes blockage of the catheter by crystalline bacterial biofilms. The aim of this work is to identify a surface-coating for catheters that is not vulnerable to colonization by Pr. mirabilis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A parallel-plate flow-cell and phase contrast microscopy were used to follow bacterial adhesion onto polymer films. Experiments with a urease-negative mutant of Pr. mirabilis suspended in buffer or urine, identified agarose as a polymer on which biofilm did not form. In tests with wild-type urease-producing cell

Craniofacial and dental manifestations of Proteus syndrome: a case report.

The Proteus syndrome is a rare congenital hamartomatous condition that is characterized by a wide range of malformations, sometimes involving the face. Common manifestations include partial gigantism, congenital lipomas, and plantar hyperplasia. In this report we describe the craniofacial clinicopathological development in a girl with Proteus syndrome from age 6 to 20 years. The patient had pronounced hemifacial hypertrophy, exostoses in the left parietal region, and enlargement of the inferior alveolar nerve and mandibular canal in the affected region. The dental development of the affected l
