mRNA Galsomes Vaccine Protects Budgerigars Against Virulent Chlamydia psittaci Challenge.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia (C.) psittaci is an avian respiratory pathogen that regularly infects budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and is a known zoonosis. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccine formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), either with (mRNA Galsomes) or without (mRNA LNPs) the glycolipid antigen α-Galactosylceramide, in protecting budgerigars against C. psittaci genotype A infection. METHODS: Three groups of eight budgerigars received two intramuscular vaccinations with PBS, mRNA LNPs or mRNA Galsomes, and were subsequently chal

Histopathological survey of protozoa, helminths and acarids of imported and local psittacine and passerine birds in Japan.

A total of 534 psittacine and passerine birds consisting of 241 imported and 293 local birds were examined histologically. As a result, the following parasites were found: Giardia (86 cases), Knemido-coptes (26 cases), coccidia (10 cases), Ascaridia (6 cases), Cryptosporidium (5 cases), Sarcocystis (5 cases), tapeworm (4 cases), microfilaria (2 cases), Hexamita (1 case), and Spiroptera (1 case). High incidences of giardiasis and knemido-coptic infestation were detected in the local birds, but rarely in the imported birds. Giardial trophozoites were observed mainly in the duodenum of budgerigar

Extrinsic allergic bronchiolitis in a bird fancier.

A patient in whom a severe systemic illness was characterised by weight loss, arthralgia and breathlessness was exposed to her pet bird. This pragmatic approach reproduced the features of her illness. The changes that occurred in her pulmonary physiology and histology differed from those seen in extrinsic allergic alveolitis in many important respects.

Precipitins to different avaian serum antigens in bird fancier's lung and coeliac disease.

Precipitins to avian serum antigens have been found in the sera of bird fanciers and, until now, they have been considered strong supporting evidence for a clinical diagnosis of bird fancier's lung (BFL). We now report that 35% of patients with coeliac disease, none of whom had recently kept a bird, had precipitins against an avian serum antigen common to all the avian species tested, but which was distinct from the antigens usually associated with BFL. This antigen was a component of hen egg yolk but not of bird droppings. In patients with BFL the antibody response results from inhaled antige

Molecular detection and characterization of Parrot Bornavirus 4 (PaBV-4) in captive psittacine birds in India.

Avian bornaviruses are a recently described genetically diverse group consisting of 15 separate viruses within five different viral species belonging to the genus Orthobornavirus within the family Bornaviridae. Amongst the avian bornaviruses discovered, the parrot bornaviruses (PaBV) belonging to species Orthobornavirus alphapsittaciforme possess the highest veterinary relevance and is considered to be a major threat to psittacine aviculture. Since the discovery of PaBV in psittacine birds suffering from proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) in 2008, PaBV infections have been reported worldw

A novel psittacine adenovirus identified during an outbreak of avian chlamydiosis and human psittacosis: zoonosis associated with virus-bacterium coinfection in birds.

Chlamydophila psittaci is found worldwide, but is particularly common among psittacine birds in tropical and subtropical regions. While investigating a human psittacosis outbreak that was associated with avian chlamydiosis in Hong Kong, we identified a novel adenovirus in epidemiologically linked Mealy Parrots, which was not present in healthy birds unrelated to the outbreak or in other animals. The novel adenovirus (tentatively named Psittacine adenovirus HKU1) was most closely related to Duck adenovirus A in the Atadenovirus genus. Sequencing showed that the Psittacine adenovirus HKU1 genome

A review of DNA viral infections in psittacine birds.

To date, several DNA viral infections have been reported in psittacine birds. Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) is characterized by symmetric feather dystrophy and loss and development of beak deformities. PBFD is caused by beak and feather virus, which belongs to the Circoviridae, and is the most important infection in psittacine birds worldwide. Avian polyomavirus infection causes acute death, abdominal distention, and feather abnormalities. Pacheco's disease (PD), which is caused by psittacid herpesvirus type 1, is an acute lethal disease without a prodrome. Psittacine adenovirus i

Pneumonia due to Cryptococcus neoformans in a patient receiving infliximab: possible zoonotic transmission from a pet cockatiel.

The use of humanized antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) may increase the risk of various opportunistic infections, including tuberculosis and fungal infections. We report a case of cryptococcal pneumonia in a patient who was taking infliximab for rheumatoid arthritis. A temporally related exposure history raised the possibility that our patient acquired the infection from his pet cockatiel. It seems prudent to advise patients receiving infliximab to avoid exposure to pet avian excreta.

Avian Diabetes Mellitus: A Review.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an uncommon, poorly documented metabolic disorder of birds. Extrapolating knowledge from DM in mammals is challenging because of marked differences in avian physiology and metabolism. A literature review from December 1991 to January 2022 identified 14 publications covering 16 diabetic birds, 63% (10/16) of which belonged to the order Psittaciformes with Ara as the predominant genus. No sex predilection was noted, but males generally presented at a younger age. Commonly reported clinical signs included polyuria 94% (15/16), polydipsia 88% (14/16), weight loss 75% (12/

Pasteurella multocida in psittacines: prevalence, pathology, and characterization of isolates.

Although the pathogenicity of Pasteurella multocida for psittacines (parrots and their relatives) has been documented in several case reports, the associated pathologic syndromes have not been well defined nor have the isolates been characterized. In addition, the prevalence of P. multocida in psittacines has not been determined. Three hundred twenty-eight psittacines (253 clinically healthy and 75 clinically ill) were cultured for P. multocida. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the pharynx, choana, or cloaca of psittacines. However, in five dead psittacines submitted for necropsy, P

[An outbreak of psittacosis at a bird-fanciers fair in the Netherlands].

Within 2 weeks after a bird-fanciers fair in the Netherlands in November 2007 11 patients presented at our hospital with fever, shivers and severe headache. Dyspnea and dry cough were less common, although the chest X-ray showed a consolidation in 9 out of 11 patients. The clinical diagnosis of psittacosis was quickly confirmed using real-time PCR, although the sensitivity of this test was low (20%). In 9 patients the diagnosis was later confirmed by a rise in complement fixing antibodies in paired sera. None of the patients needed intensive care treatment. All patients recovered uneventfully

Gastrointestinal Disease Associated with Non-albicans Candida Species in Six Birds.

A non-albicans Candida species was identified in 6 birds exhibiting clinical signs associated with gastrointestinal disease. The clinical disease signs noted in these 6 birds included diarrhea, regurgitation, and melena, and were considered concurrent or identified secondary to other comorbidities. Candida glabrata was identified in a yellow-naped Amazon parrot (Amazona auropalliata), a ring-necked dove (Streptopelia capicola), a blue-and-gold macaw (Ara ararauna), and 2 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). Candida krusei was identified in a white-crowned parrot (Pionus senilis). Fungal culture

Fatal coxiellosis in Swainson's Blue Mountain Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus moluccanus).

Three Swainson's Blue Mountain Rainbow Lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus moluccanus), ranging from 6 to 8 months of age, presented with lethargy, emaciation, and progressive neurologic signs. The first one died 24 hours after the onset of clinical signs, and the other two were euthanized 10 to 14 days after the onset of progressive neurologic disease. Clinical signs in these lorikeets included head pressing, hemiparesis, seizures, obtunded mentation, weakness, and lethargy. Two of the lorikeets had hepatomegaly, and one had splenomegaly on gross examination. Histopathology revealed dissemina

[Allergies to animal hair in diseases of the upper respiratory tract (author's transl)].

Among 214 patients diagnosed in 1972 as being allergic to animal hair, 79 (48 women) were re-examined later. In almost all cases with a positive personal (33) or family history (26) of allergy there was a particularly rapid sensitization. The largest proportion of pathogenic allergens was from guinea pigs (39), cats (17), golden hamsters (11), rabbits (6), horses, dogs and budgerigars (2 each). 14 patients reacted to the main antigen alone in prick or intracutaneous tests, while in all other cases there were cross-reactions, most frequently to epithelium of sheep, cattle or horse. Real-time PCR detection and quantitation of Chlamydophila psittaci in human and avian specimens from a veterinary clinic cluster.

We report three cases of psittacosis in staff working in a veterinary surgery, which was related to exposure to a sick, wild psittacine bird. Chlamydial genus- and chlamydial species-specific DNA was detected in clinical specimens, including throat swabs, whole blood and urine. The organism load was quantified by real-time PCR (RT-PCR), which revealed 10(5)-fold more organisms in conjunctival swabs from the source bird than in the human samples. One clinic attendant was infected despite using personal protective equipment when handling the bird. This is the first report of PCR analyses of bloo
