Filmmaker Paul Schrader (2018) defined Transcendental-Slow Cinema as a style that seeks to convey an ineffable experience using the formal qualities of cinema. The filmmaking techniques employed create a frustrating, withholding experience for the viewer, a cinema journey that is far from mainstream entertainment movie-viewing. This experience maps onto Bion's theory of thinking and growth and its relationship to frustration, as well as his further development and complication of those ideas in his work on transformations and O. It is recommended that by enduring the experience of these films,

Four of Freud's fundamental hypotheses regarding psychic functioning are shown to be without evidence to support them.

Sandor Ferenczi contributed some of the best formulations of complex trauma and dissociation that exist. No one has described more passionately than Ferenczi the traumatic induction of dissociative trance with its resulting fragmentation of the personality. His concept of identification with the aggressor (which differed significantly from Anna Freud's later concept using the same term) describes how the traumatized child splits/dissociates the perpetrating aspects from the nurturing aspects of the aggressor and internalizes these in separate self-states, enabling the traumatically overwhelmed

In "On Arrogance," Wilfred Bion made a remarkable claim: "the analyst who is treating an apparently neurotic patient must regard a negative therapeutic response together with the appearance of scattered, unrelated references to curiosity, arrogance, and stupidity as evidence that he is in the presence of a psychological catastrophe with which he will have to deal." However Bion came to believe this, he sought grounds for it in a reading of Oedipus that seriously distorts that tragedy. Since the clinical outcome in "On Arrogance" appears to be impasse, perhaps even iatrogenic injury, the text's

This article examines Brazil's free psychoanalytic clinics as radical experiments in what I call sanitary emancipation-a mode of mental health care production that links wellbeing to liberation from colonial oppression. Based on ethnographic research with clinical collectives in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and beyond, I argue that these grassroots initiatives mobilise a "corruptive" form of emancipation: an imperfect, materially entangled refusal of purity that emerges from a discipline (psychoanalysis) marked by elitist and patriarchal histories. Through practices of territorial listening-offe

This conceptual review introduces Institutional Psychotherapy, a French movement that emerged around World War II as a clinical, political, and theoretical effort to prevent psychiatric institutions from becoming alienating asylums. It extends psychoanalytic practice into a collective, transference-based therapeutic milieu grounded in everyday life. Drawing on psychoanalysis, libertarian Marxism, and phenomenology, we present it as a flexible conceptual and critical toolbox rather than a fixed corpus. We identify two key distinctions and six "logical operators" that structure its originality a

The author uses Lacanian psychoanalysis to conceptualize transgender embodiment, focusing on the Lacanian concept "objet a" to analyze how transpeople may be uniquely attuned to a fundamental lack in being endemic to all subjects of language. Objet a is central to the Imaginary register where body images and sex morphology intermingle. The author discusses objet a in relation to the mirror (and the Other's cisgender gaze), anxiety, postsurgical scars, linguistics, and Thing-like feelings of monstrosity (born of transphobia). For those who are transgender, the a may register as an embodied disj

Far from disproving the model of mind functioning proposed by psychoanalysis, the recent advances in neuropsychiatrical research confirmed the crucial ideas of Sigmund Freud. The hypothesis that the origin of mental illnesses lies in the impossibility for a subject to erase the long-term effects of a remote adverse event is in tune with the view that several psychiatric disturbances reflect the activation of aberrant unconscious memory processes. Freud's insights did not stop here, but went on to describe in an extremely precise manner the neural mechanisms of memory formation almost a century

The cases of 40 consecutive patients, accepted for supervised psychoanalysis at the Treatment Center of The New York Psychoanalytic Institute, are reviewed. The process of the initial evaluation is examined as well as the nature of the patient group, the characteristics of the treatment, outcome, and follow-up data. A survey of a group of 42 patients from the private practice of a group of graduate analysts during the same period of time is also reported. Both studies are discussed in relation to methodological issues, and an approach is suggested for the study of assessment of analyzability a

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychological pathology in the general population, but also in the military, given the operational context. Several complementary theories based on neuroscience and psychoanalysis have sought to explain the links between PTSD and violent acts. Violence is seen as an expression of the illness, acting as a symptom of traumatic repetition, or as evidence of behavioral changes at work. The consequences of PTSD and violence impact all the individual's bio-psycho-social spheres. Prevention policies have been developed in the military environment to d

Traditional Freudian psychoanalysis has always considered interpretation to be the most effective tool for altering deeply ingrained unconscious thought patterns and perspectives. Through detailed vignettes, this case study describes how a persistently concrete response to interpretation is ultimately analyzed and worked through. The work of Alan Bass is used as a technical guide toward facilitating this process. His understanding of concrete resistances is an elaboration of Freud's interest in fetishism and disavowal (the predominant defense against differentiation) and Eros (the integrating

In a study looking at severe substance abuse in an inpatient clinic, an indirect relationship was found between narcissistic loss in substance abusers and the trauma that has not yet been mourned by their ancestors or parents. The authors explore these links using psychoanalytic theory, Greek mythology, and a case study to investigate how these concepts are implicated in the histories of those who struggle with drug addiction. Psychoanalysis has explored the relationship between object loss and ego development but, more recently, the concept of the intergenerational transmission of trauma has

Gender influences psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in a variety of ways. This article discusses these with reference to the woman therapist and analyst. Choice of therapist is influenced by realistic, transferential, and stereotyped ideas such as (1), wishes for a role model, (2) unconscious fantasies for a better mother, and (3) ideas that women are more nuturent. Family and work conflicts, pregnancy, and lifestyle issues are special issues for the woman professional. Transference and coutertransference manifestations concern variations in erotic and eroticized transference, maternal and pate

If a patient with a "normal" nose desires rhinoplastic surgery, psychopathologic behavior should be recognized. In such patients, surgery is contra-indicated and the origin for the neurosis should be investigated. Two patients are presented in whom psychoanalysis was useful in correcting complex neurotic fixations on the nose with their attendant psychic dysharmonias. Therapy provided each patient with a more satisfying personal image. Each patient's desire for corrective nasal surgery was eliminated and patients were better able to accept their nasal features as well as gain positive social a

There are two rare psychopathological phenomena: The fear to be buried alive (taphophobia) and the delusion to rise again from the grave (delusion of resurrection). These cases are given as illustration. Taphophobia is counted among the neuroses, the delusion of resurrection is a cardinal symptom of the psychosis "phantastic paraphrenia" Both states are rooted in unconscious fears and and wishes in man, especially in superstition. The theoretical concept behind these psychopathological phenomena is twofold--using an eclectic open system of interpretation--taphophobia is seen in the light of ps

This article deals with Pierre Janet's concept of "Psychological Analysis" (analyse psychologique). It brings out Janet's criticism of Sigmund Freud's ideas, and delineates the difference between psychological analysis (Janet) and psychoanalysis (Freud). Further it points out that Janet's theories on the pathogenesis of neurotic disorders rely on the concept of psychic trauma and associated fixed ideas. Mental force and mental tension, described in greater detail, are essential for the pathogenesis of mental disorders. According to Janet, a significant characteristic of the neurotically distur

The psychoanalysis of a case of an unusual perversion demonstrated the historical determinants of the ritual. Drive and defense, bisexual disposition, and identifications were represented. At the beginning of the analysis the patient appeared to have borderline character traits; but as the analysis unfolded, an oedipal situation was revealed and character development occurred. The factors that determined the particular outcome for this patient, instead of homosexuality, or transsexualism, are discussed. In some cases of perversion, such as the one herein described, only psychoanalytic explorat

Traditionally, it has been assumed that there is only one type of anxiety; recent pharmacologic evidence suggests that there may be several. The psychoanalytic concept of "neurotic" symptoms as depressurizing mechanisms is out of keeping with most evidence now available. Spontaneous or "free-floating" anxiety may be partly biologic and genetic in origin. Anxiety symptoms evoked by specific stimuli behave in part like conditioned responses. Where conditioning theory has failed to propose a plausible unconditioned stimulus for pathologic anxiety, biology, ethology, and psychoanalysis may have be
