Meaningless, but not emotionless: Evidence from a megastudy of pseudoword lexical decisions.

We examined the influence of morphological structure and emotional content on the recognition of pseudowords in a megastudy using a lexical decision task. To this end, 1,025 native Spanish speakers responded to 1,200 experimental words and 4,800 experimental pseudowords with different morphological structures derived from emotional and neutral base words, as well as to 1,200 filler words and 1,200 filler pseudowords. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy were analyzed using linear and generalized linear mixed-effects models, revealing an effect of morphological composition. Pseudowords containing

Resolution of Null and Overt Pronouns in Catalan: An Eye Tracking Study.

This study investigates subject pronoun resolution in Catalan, a null-subject language, by examining linguistic and cognitive factors. We focus on gender, pronoun type (null and overt), and syntactic function (subject and object), as well as the order of mention (first and second) of antecedents. Using eye-tracking in the Visual World Paradigm (VWP), we analyze the interplay between these factors in both canonical (SVO) and non-canonical (OVS) sentence structures. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 (Study 1) explore how gender cues and pronoun type influence pronominal resolution in SVO sentences. Our fin

Computational Analysis of Semantic and Sentiment Features in Natural Language for Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SZ) patients exhibit abnormalities in language expression, including semantic confusion and apathy, which significantly impair social functioning. The existing studies on speech in schizophrenia patients mainly focused on semantic or grammatical features, and the integration analysis between emotional dynamics and linguistic fluency remained scarce. The present study aims to systematically analyze abnormal emotional expression in schizophrenia patients by employing natural language processing (NLP) models. METHOD: This study recruited 78 patients with SZ and 85 heal

Does lexical category matter in effects of emotionality on L2 word processing in late proficient Chinese-English bilinguals? An ERP study.

Although the effects of emotionality on word processing might be modulated by lexical category, a body of extant literature has tended to obviate the need of considering this factor. In this study, we attempted to address how lexical category modulates the effects of emotionality on L2 word processing. To this end, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from a group of late proficient Chinese-English bilinguals while they performed a lexical decision task with a set of tightly matched negative, positive, and neutral words across three lexical categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives). The r

Facing a Clinical Challenge: Limited Empirical Support for Toddler Speech Sound Production Intervention Approaches.

PURPOSE: Speech sound production intervention in early childhood is relatively rare despite empirical and theoretical support for providing this type of targeted therapy for toddlers. Challenges perpetuate the present clinical condition including those related to treatment decision making (e.g., intervention approach). METHOD: Although there are numerous speech sound production treatment approaches appropriate for the pediatric population, a much smaller proportion are proposed to be appropriate for children under the age of 3 years. Of these, five approaches (i.e., core vocabulary, cycles, n

Statistical Learning of Orthographic Regularities in Chinese Children With and Without Dyslexia.

This study examined distributional statistical learning of positional, phonetic, and semantic regularities of an artificial orthography in Chinese children aged 8-10 years: 29 with dyslexia, 29 age-matched controls, and 30 reading-level matched controls. Despite having positional regularity learning performance comparable to the controls, the children with dyslexia were poorer at learning left-right structured characters than top-bottom structured characters in high- and low-consistency conditions. Moreover, they showed difficulties in mapping a given sound or meaning to a specific character c

Current understanding of fear learning and memory in humans and animal models and the value of a linguistic approach for analyzing fear learning and memory in humans.

Fear is an emotion that serves as a driving factor in how organisms move through the world. In this review, we discuss the current understandings of the subjective experience of fear and the related biological processes involved in fear learning and memory. We first provide an overview of fear learning and memory in humans and animal models, encompassing the neurocircuitry and molecular mechanisms, the influence of genetic and environmental factors, and how fear learning paradigms have contributed to treatments for fear-related disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Current treatmen

Extending the Application of Tense and Agreement Measures: A Reply to Rispoli and Hadley (2018).

PURPOSE: In this reply, we respond to comments on our article "Tracking the Growth of Tense and Agreement in Children With Specific Language Impairment: Differences Between Measures of Accuracy, Diversity, and Productivity." CONCLUSION: The finite verb morphology composite can be disproportionately affected by frequently occurring grammatical forms produced through direct activation. This assumption was one of the reasons we wished to compare this measure to the tense marker total and the tense/agreement productivity score. The latter two measures provide valuable developmental information th

It does exist! A left-to-right spatial-numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect among native Hebrew speakers.

Several studies, starting with Dehaene, Bossini, and Giraux (1993), have reported that, in parity-judgment tasks, the difference in response latencies generated by the right and left hand are negatively correlated with number magnitudes. This SNARC (spatial-numerical association of response codes) effect is in line with the notion that the "mental number line" extends from left to right. The SNARC effect has been found mainly in native speakers of Germanic/Romanic languages; it has been suggested that the SNARC effect may derive from the experience of reading from left to right. To date, there

[Differences in linguistic representation of 10- to 12-year-old boys of divorced and not divorced parents].

Twenty-eight 10- to 14 years old boys from divorced families (separation of the parents was two years before the investigation) were compared with 26 10- to 14 years old boys from two-parent families on the basis of interviews about attachment related themes and daily situations, and by means of the California Child Q-Sort (CCQ). The interviews were analyzed with regard to coherence of language, emotional problems, reflectivity, supportive representation of their parents, verbal and nonverbal emotional openness and social network, as well as for personality variables. The boys of the divorced

Adaptation and normative data for the Comprehensive Aphasia Test in Catalan (CAT-CAT).

Assessment tools for diagnosing aphasia in languages other than English are scarce, particularly for minority languages such as Catalan. The present study introduces the Catalan adaptation of the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT-CAT), the first assessment tool of its kind in Catalan, which was developed with careful consideration of cultural and psycholinguistic factors. Additionally, the study provides normative data based on a sample of 110 Catalan-dominant speakers without language or speech disorders in order to establish the range of non-pathological performance and cut-off scores. We also

The Myth of Normal Reading.

We argue that the educational and psychological sciences must embrace the diversity of reading rather than chase the phantom of normal reading behavior. We critically discuss the research practice of asking participants in experiments to read "normally." We then draw attention to the large cross-cultural and linguistic diversity around the world and consider the enormous diversity of reading situations and goals. Finally, we observe that people bring a huge diversity of brains and experiences to the reading task. This leads to four implications: First, there are important lessons for how to co

Phonological dyslexia and phonological dysgraphia following left and right hemispherectomy.

Four adults who had hemispherectomies because of severe epilepsy following infantile of childhood damage to one hemisphere of the brain, are assessed on their reading and spelling abilities in an attempt to see if the two hemispheres are equipotential for these abilities in infancy. The psycholinguistic assessments of language processing in aphasia (PALPA) are used, and the results are interpreted from the viewpoint of hypotheses of "normal" right and left hemisphere reading abilities. Overall, the results suggest that the two hemispheres are equipotential at infancy for developing the skills

Clinical Linguistics: Analysis of Mapping Knowledge Domains in Past, Present and Future.

Across the world, many infants, children, adults, and elderly people are reported with many types of disorders and disabilities that damage, delay, or impede typical language development and/or use. Speech-language pathologists and other relevant clinicians are responsible for diagnosing, assessing, and rehabilitating these conditions. In nearly all types of disorders or disabilities that affect language, clinical linguistics plays a significant role in their study, diagnosis, and evaluation. This study provides a thorough analysis of the field of clinical linguistics. Data from Scopus, WOS, a

Striatum and language processing: Where do we stand?

More than a century ago, Broca (1861), Wernicke (1874) and Lichteim (1885) laid the foundations for the first anatomo-functional model of language, secondarily enriched by Geschwind (1967), leading to the Broca-Wernicke-Lichteim-Geschwind model. This model included the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortices as well as a subcortical structure, which could be the striatum, whose nature and role have remained unclear. Although the emergence of language deficits in patients with striatal injury has challenged the cortical language models developed over the past 30 years, the integration of the s

Lexical restructuring in the absence of literacy.

Vocabulary growth was suggested to prompt the implementation of increasingly finer-grained lexical representations of spoken words in children (e.g., [Metsala, J. L., & Walley, A. C. (1998). Although literacy was not explicitly mentioned in this lexical restructuring hypothesis, the process of learning to read and spell might also have

Comparing sentence superiority effects in deaf and hearing readers: The role of syntactic and visuo-attentional processing.

Reading requires the integration of linguistic and visuo-attentional information to support efficient word identification within context. The sentence superiority effect (SSE) illustrates this integration, showing that words are recognized more accurately when embedded in a grammatical sentence than in a scrambled sequence. While well established in hearing readers, the extent to which deaf readers exhibit this effect remains unclear. The present study examined the SSE in 18 deaf and 20 hearing adults using the Rapid Parallel Visual Presentation (RPVP) paradigm. Participants identified target

Involvement of episodic memory in language comprehension: Naturalistic comprehension pushes unrelated words closer in semantic space for at least 12 h.

Recent experience with a word significantly influences its subsequent interpretation. For instance, encountering bank in a river-related context biases future interpretations toward 'side of a river' (vs. 'financial bank'). To explain this effect, the episodic context account posits that episodic memory helps bind word meanings in the language input, creating a temporary, context-specific representation that can bias subsequent lexical interpretation. This account predicts that even unrelated words would be linked together in episodic memory, potentially altering their interpretation. In Exper

The sign superiority effect: Lexical status facilitates peripheral handshape identification for deaf signers.

Deaf signers exhibit an enhanced ability to process information in their peripheral visual field, particularly the motion of dots or orientation of lines. Does their experience processing sign language, which involves identifying meaningful visual forms across the visual field, contribute to this enhancement? We tested whether deaf signers recruit language knowledge to facilitate peripheral identification through a sign superiority effect (i.e., better handshape discrimination in a sign than a pseudosign) and whether such a superiority effect might be responsible for perceptual enhancements re
