Effectiveness of labels in digital art experience: psychophysiological and behavioral evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays museums make large use of digital materials (e.g., virtual tours) to attract visitors. Therefore, it is worthwhile investigating which variables affect the engagement with art outside the museum, and whether digital reproductions of artworks are as effective as museum originals in producing a satisfying aesthetic experience. METHODS: Here we tested the effectiveness of introducing additional informative materials on the artistic enjoyment of contemporary paintings presented on a computer screen. Naïve observers were exposed to essential and descriptive labels before vie

Exploring psychophysiological indices of disruptive behavior disorders and their subtypes of aggression.

BACKGROUND: Psychophysiological measures of arousal are often considered as potential biomarkers for disruptive behavior disorder (DBD). Nevertheless, the evidence is mixed, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of DBD and different subtypes of aggression. Additionally, arousal measures of the central nervous system (e.g. electroencephalogram: EEG) are underrepresented compared to peripheral ones (heart rate: HR; skin conductance: SC). METHODS: We recorded HR, SC, and EEG (frequency band power at three electrodes Fz, Cz, Pz) in 49 participants with DBD, and 15 typically developing peers durin

Mind and body: Psychophysiological profiles of instructional and motivational self-talk.

Self-talk is a psychological skill that benefits motor performance by controlling and organizing performers' thoughts. While the behavioral effects of self-talk are clear, research on the mechanisms underpinning the effects of different modes of self-talk is sparse. To address this issue, we propose and test a psychophysiological model of the effects of self-talk on motor performance. Forty golf novices practiced a golf putting task while using either instructional or motivational self-talk preceding each putt. We measured performance (radial error), technique (club kinematics and muscle activ

Kickboxing review: anthropometric, psychophysiological and activity profiles and injury epidemiology.

Kickboxing is one of the modern combat sports. The psychophysiological demands of a kickboxing competition require athletes to achieve high thresholds of several aspects of physical fitness. The aim of the current review is to critically analyse and appraise the kickboxer's anthropometric, physiological, physical and psychological attributes with the activity profile and injury epidemiology in order to provide practical recommendations for training as well as new areas of scientific research. The available information shows that both amateur and elite-level male kickboxers are characterized by

Psychophysiological mechanisms underlying spatial attention in children with primary headache.

OBJECTIVE: Neurophysiological studies to evaluate spatial attention in children with primary headache are lacking. Tactile spatial attention modulates the N140 somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) amplitude. The aims of the study are: (1) to investigate the effect of spatial attention on the N140 amplitude in children with migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) and in healthy children, and (2) to correlate the neurophysiological results with a neuropsychological test for spatial attention. METHODS: We studied 16 patients with migraine without aura (MoA), 12 TTH children and 10 healthy subje

Psychophysiological ambulatory assessment of affective dysregulation in borderline personality disorder.

Many experts now believe that pervasive problems in affect regulation constitute the central area of dysfunction in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, data is sparse and inconclusive. We hypothesized that patients with BPD, in contrast to healthy gender and nationality-matched controls, show a higher frequency and intensity of self-reported emotions, altered physiological indices of emotions, more complex emotions and greater problems in identifying specific emotions. We took a 24-hour psychophysiological ambulatory monitoring approach to investigate affect regulation during every

Psychophysiological reactions to two levels of voluntary hyperventilation in panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) patients usually react with more self-reported distress to voluntary hyperventilation (HV) than do comparison groups. Less consistently PD patients manifest physiological differences such as more irregular breathing and slower normalization of lowered end-tidal pCO(2) after HV. To test whether physiological differences before, during, or after HV would be more evident after more intense HV, we designed a study in which 16 PD patients and 16 non-anxious controls hyperventilated for 3 min to 25 mmHg, and another 19 PD patients and another 17 controls to 20 mmHg. Patients reac

Psychophysiological determinants and concomitants of deficient decision making in pathological gamblers.

Psychophysiological responses are considered to be a mediating factor in the development of pathological gambling (PG) and PG has been associated with differential arousal levels during gambling. Yet little is known about the specific psychophysiological responses to wins and losses in PG. This study investigated heart rate (HR) and skin conductance responses (SCRs) during the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) in an adult PG group (n=46) and a normal control (NC) group (n=47). Anticipatory psychophysiological reactions to disadvantageous and advantageous choices during the IGT and psychophysiological r

Medically unexplained dyspnea: psychophysiological characteristics and role of breathing therapy.

BACKGROUND: Medically unexplained dyspnea occurs commonly in medical settings and remains poorly understood. This study was conducted to investigate the psychophysiological characteristics of medically unexplained dyspnea and the efficacy of breathing retraining for these patients. METHODS: A group of patients with medically unexplained dyspnea were compared to patients with a variety of organic lung diseases and healthy subjects. In another group of patients, the influence of breathing therapy on complaints, anxiety, and breath-holding was evaluated for an average of 1.5 years. RESULTS: Pat

Psychophysiological reactivity of borderline hypertensives and their recovery after mental stress.

UNLABELLED: The question of psychophysiological reactivity of borderline hypertensives is still controversial. METHODS: Young males with borderline blood pressure levels and normotensive controls were recruited during a routine examination. Samples of study I comprised 19 subjects, samples of study II 18 subjects. Two stressors were presented (distressing movie, mental arithmetic), each followed by a recovery phase. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and electrodermal parameters were assessed repeatedly. RESULTS: Borderline hypertensives showed greater reactions to stressors

Psychophysiological responses to food exposure: an experimental study in binge eaters.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate psychophysiological responses to food exposure in binge eaters. METHOD: Thirty female volunteers reporting regular binge attacks were compared with 30 nonbinge eaters. Subjects attended individually for the single laboratory session. Continuous measures of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), electrodermal activity (EDA), and respiration rate were taken during rest and exposure to their favorite binge food. In addition, psychophysiological monitoring continued while subjects were allowed to eat after food exposure. Participants also

[The psychophysiological basis of the compensatory development of visual perception in vision disorders].

At comparison of the data obtained in psychophysical and electrophysiological studies, disturbances were revealed of neurophysiological mechanisms of visual perception in children with the diseases of retinocortical tract. For compensation of the disturbances and development of perception a method is suggested of specific activation of neuronal formations based on their fundamental property--plasticity. The method consists in using rhythmical repeated stimulation of eyes with images which widely vary by the brightness, contrast, colour, form, orientation and spatial position in the visual fiel

Therapeutic Evaluation of Mind Sound Resonance Technique (A Guided Yogic Meditative Technique) on Human Psychophysiology - A Narrative Review.

Mind sound resonance technique (MSRT) is a yoga-based relaxation practice that incorporates mantra chanting and relaxation techniques. It is designed to address psychosomatic disorders by harmonizing the Manomaya Kosha and regulating autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions. This narrative review examines the effects of MSRT on various health parameters, including its ability to alleviate stress, anxiety, and chronic pain; promote better sleep; enhance cognitive, cardiovascular, and lung functions; and reduce smoking behavior. A review of 21 clinical studies, including randomized controlled tr

Cool in theory, not in practice: Effects of interset palm cooling on resistance exercise performance and psychophysiology responses.

Previous research has explored distal extremity cooling as a strategy to enhance exercise performance. However, it remains unclear whether the intervention may aid in physiological or performance-oriented outcomes in an ecologically valid context. This study's primary purpose was to evaluate the effects of interset palm cooling (IPC) using a water cooling device during a full-body (FB), multi-set resistance training (RT) protocol on performance and perceptual measures. In a randomized crossover design, participants completed a familiarization session with 10RM testing and two randomized experi

Is eye to eye contact really threatening and avoided in social anxiety?--An eye-tracking and psychophysiology study.

The effects of direct and averted gaze on autonomic arousal and gaze behavior in social anxiety were investigated using a new paradigm including animated movie stimuli and eye-tracking methodology. While high, medium, and low socially anxious (HSA vs. MSA vs. LSA) women watched animated movie clips, in which faces responded to the gaze of the participants with either direct or averted gaze, their eye movements, heart rate (HR) and skin conductance responses (SCR) were continuously recorded. Groups did not differ in their gaze behavior concerning direct vs. averted gaze, but high socially anxio
